ROB DRAPER BIO
Rob Draper has finished his debut album “The Rest Are Details”, which features 10 new original songs. The album was produced and engineered by Ross Ryan (”One Person Queue” and I Am Pegasus).
As a young artist, Rob has already earned the respect of colleagues such as Mike Rudd, Bill Putt and Peter Robertson of Spectrum, who all play on the album.
Rob’s songs are influenced by the mysteries of the fairer sex and the beneficial properties of influential company. His lyrical stories have a subtle touch and he loves to investigate the good and bad in life, usually finding both beauty and humour in it. And he’s a devil on the guitar, too.
His music has a natural flow that sits perfectly with the lyrics, as you follow the twists and turns of his exceptional tales. “The Rest Are Details” includes everything from a subtle waltz to a thundering opening track, each song delivering compelling narratives and tales. Having studied film structure and text, Rob uses these techniques in trying to hold and captivate his audience. Rob is a huge movie buff; citing “Cool Hand Luke” as a favourite.
“The Rest Are Details” features 10 new tracks including the lusty and devilish Tiny Little Buttons and successful single Lunatics In Dressing Gowns. Triple M¹s Liegh Kuhlman picked up Lunatics In Dressing Gowns for rotation on “The Local”.
Other highlights are the harmonica driven bittersweet It’s Not Like That, and the sly and subtle Baby Blue, a nearly perfect example of a love song, which was influenced by Nick Cave’s lecture on The Secret Life of The Love Song. Down This Way is an ear-catching ode to Hank Williams and Something You Had To Do is a Lap Steel driven love story set in Australia¹s convict era.
Rob, 24, shares a birthday with one of his favourite artists, the legendary Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, who he supported during Jack’s 2004 tour of Australia. They both soon found they had much more in common than their birth date, a shared love of telling tales and performing. Jack told him, “You remind me of the time when Bob Dylan first played to me. Stick with it, you’ve got something there.”, after putting Rob to the test one morning in a St Andrews B&B.
Rob’s influences are broad and eclectic. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, The Beatles and Nick Cave are among the most prominent. He gives a terrific live performance and has recently played with many of his favourite artists such as Tex Perkins, Deborah Conway, Ross Wilson and Ross Ryan. He plays gigs all over Melbourne and regularly appears at venues around Fitzroy and St. Kilda.
