Sophie Koh “All The Pretty Boys” Tour underway.

Filed under: Tours, General — site admin @ 7:36 pm

Sophie Koh kicked off her “All The Pretty Boys” album tour in style with a magical show in Darwin. To cap off a 33 degree dry season day, Sophie Koh(and band) played open air amphitheatre in the middle of the Darwin Botanical Gardens. This show, part of the 2005 Darwin Festival. Sophie spent 2 years living in Darwin before moving back to Melbourne late last year, and her audience made sure she knew they had not forgotten her; for a full 70 minutes, she held them in the palm of her hand.

Sophie continues her tour this week with shows on the Gold Coast and Brisbane, before she launches the album for her “second home crowd” in Melbourne at The Northcote Social Club on Saturday September 3rd.

Sophie Koh’s debut album “All The Pretty Boys” (In-Fidelity Recordings) has been garnering rave reviews around the country; including 4 star reviews in Mx Melbourne, Limelight Magazine and The Brag; the album was produced by ARIA award winner Richard Pleasance.

When Mia Dyson packed her guitars, her band and a portable recording studio into her car and headed out to a friends’ mud brick house in Daylesford Victoria, she had no idea she was about to make one of the most talked about debut albums of 2003.

“Cold Water is a remarkably accomplished debut…Her breathless rasp soars and sinks with the kind of measured beauty that transcends the usual lovelorn blues.”

- Julie Hosking, Melbourne Herald Sun, April 2003

Cold Water was nominated for an ARIA award and jettisoned the then 22 year-old into a continuous touring schedule both here and overseas. Taking in major festivals such as the East Coast Blues and Roots, Falls, Womadelaide, NXNE in Canada and The Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, Mia was wholeheartedly embraced by audiences and critics alike.

In 2005 she has returned with her self-produced sophomore album Parking Lots, cementing Mia’s place as one of Australia’s most exhilarating songwriters.

Recorded by co-producer Lloyd Barratt and mixed by internationally acclaimed producer Nick Launay (Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Silverchair) Parking Lots delves into raw, impassioned territory. It launches from a rock solid ground of roots influences, with wild songs of love, devotion, gratitude and dispossession. There is a sense from the album’s opener ‘Roll Me Out’ that one is in assured hands, Mia Dyson has arrived.

Mia plays electric, lap steel, baritone, slide and acoustic guitar on Parking Lots. The focus of the album, like her live shows, is as much about Mia’s dynamic guitar playing as her extraordinary voice. Hailing from the surfing town of Torquay along Victoria’s west coast, Mia grew up in a house passionate about music. Her father Jim Dyson, a respected guitar maker and musician, played Mia records by Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat whilst her mother Gail introduced her to the likes of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. It was Mia though, who sought out the work of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch & Will Oldham.

Parking Lots was recorded at a holiday house in Victoria’s Mt Martha with Mia’s band Lucas Taranto (bass) and Daniel Farrugia (drums). Stage two saw the studio move back home to the bungalow in Mia’s backyard, where she was joined by special guests Matt Walker, Steve Hesketh (Jet/Dan Brodie) Carl Panuzzo and Sime Nugent. Last but by no means least came diva Renee Geyer, who added backing vocals during the album’s mixing stage at Sing Sing, Melbourne.

Parking Lots is a stirring collection of inspired songs, delivered with the kick and command of an artist who has found her voice and isn’t afraid to use it.

What the critics say:

“Dyson has one of the most powerfully emotive female voices
in the country. On Parking Lots, she now demonstrates the songwriting
maturity to let that voice truly soar.”
Patrick Donovan – The Age

“Tough, rocking rhythms and slow grooves on one guitar behind a voice that has control
and a whole lot of welly…it’s easy to see why Australians are getting excited about Dyson.”
Rob Adams - The Herald (Edinburgh) Monday August 23, 2004

Sold out, must-see Comedy Festival hit returns for Melbourne Fringe

Joanne Brookfield’s stand up comedy show Princess Pissy Pants The Greedy Cheese Eating Bitch and Other Naughty Dog Tales returns for two weeks – in two separate venues – for Melbourne Fringe Festival. It premiered during this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival and was a sold out hit. Night after night after night it played to full houses, quite a feat given the show was competing against 200 other shows with bigger budgets and bigger names attached and is testament to the strength of the positive word of mouth that was being generated about the show. “It made me want to buy dog instead of have a baby” said one audience member about this hilarious and moving tale of Joanne’s life with her German Shepherd Murphy, who died last year.

But don’t go expecting cliché. This isn’t a show about ‘have you ever noticed how dogs are different to cats?’ It’s about bigger things - life, death and how much Joanne despises carrying pooh around in a bag. It’s about the amazing bond we are able to form with an entirely different species and at its core is an inspiring message about the importance of having love in our lives. “A vigorously feel good show,” said The Age, Joanne “oozes warmth but is never mawkish.”

Once again, audience members are asked to bring a photo of their dog, which will be used as part of the backdrop to the show…last season one audience member took that a step further by smuggling in their Chihuahua in a handbag, and that wasn’t the only dog to come see the show. A Belgian Shepherd came and checked it out as well, with their visually impaired companion, so given this is a Fringe festival - who knows what will happen this time around!

Last season the show raised more than $1,100 for the Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne and once again audience members will be able to make donations at the end of each show. Joanne will also be donating all profits from her mid-season matinee show to the Lost Dogs’ Home, which will be on Saturday Oct 1 at 4.30pm in the Meeting Room in the North Melbourne Town Hall. “I loved my dog so much I wrote a whole show about her,” says Joanne, “but sadly not everyone feels the same, as evidenced by the number of dogs that end up lost and abandoned. The Lost Dogs’ Home do a great job in caring for these animals and re-homing them and I’m hoping we can raise twice as much money for them this time around”.

“Joanne Brookfield is a must-see” The Age, 31.5.2005

“Brookfield’s warm, chatty approach..makes you feel a little better about the world, dog owner or not”

North By Northwest Poetry and Folk Club

Attention Sydney folks!

This coming Thursday, September 1st, at 8pm, we feature a group who are starting to make a name for themselves - The Jim Stubbs Backing Band. They have been impressing a lot of people lately, at places such as St Albans Folk Festival and at the Loaded Dog Mini Festival. They produce a warm folk blues sound incorporating acoustic blues, Irish, gospel and old timey country music. The members of the band are Jim Stubbs, a fine blues and folk harmonica player; Steve MacDonald, a highly experienced guitarist and mandolin player from the Illawarra; Matt Foster, a veteran of many bands in the US and Australia, playing guitar and percussion; and Kellie Stubbs, who is developing a rich blues sound to add to her folk singing repertoire. You are in for a wonderful musical experience with this group, so don’t miss them!

North By Northwest Poetry and Folk Club meets in The Cornucopia Cafe, and is one of the best acoustic venues in Sydney. There will be refreshments for sale and BYO’s are welcome. Entry is $12/$10.

Enquiries - Jenny/John 9559 3658 (h) / 0414 903 259 (m), jdcarter@iinet.net.au , Tony 9858 7882 (w) / 0409 784 689 (m). See you there!

How to get there:
The Cornucopia is in the grounds of the Old Gladesville Hospital, corner of Victoria Rd and Punt Rd Gladesville. Assuming you are coming by car, if you are coming from the city end over Gladesville Bridge, it is on the left, and is a few blocks before the Gladesville shops. Turn left into Punt Rd. If you are coming from the other end, you turn right into Punt Rd. There is a set of lights and a right hand turning bay there. There is a police station on the corner. Go to the end of Punt Rd, and just before Banjo Patterson cottage, there is a gate on your left. Turn into the grounds there, and then take your first turn left again up towards Victoria Rd. When you come to a fork in the road, take the left fork, still heading up towards Victoria Rd, and turn left at the top, near the fence. Building is a two-storey stone building on your left, with the sign “Cornucopia Coffee Shop”. You can actually see it from Victoria Rd. There is parking in various places near the building. On the other hand, if you’re coming by bus, the 500/501 bus stops nearby out in Victoria Rd, and you can walk in from there.

Review of August concert with Tony Eardley and Ecopella
A small but perfectly formed audience attended our August concert featuring Tony Eardley and Ecopella. The night started off with some floorspots. John Warner’s spot included his hilarious tale “The Briggs and Stratton Pump”, and “Touch the Children” - one of his songs from his new presentation “Sandpit Picket” which he later performed very successfully at Almost Acoustic the next week. There were also some lovely guitar tunes from David Spira.

For Tony Eardley’s performance, the atmosphere was friendly and intimate, as our small select group gathered closer. He opened with the tuneful “Finisterre”, by Ian Telford, introduced us to a thought provoking new song “Before the City Wakes”, and changed to bazouki for his song “Footsteps on an Empty Road”, and “See it Come Down”. My favourite one was a self-composition I’ve not heard before - “Water from the Well”, which is about rediscovering the music inside which might not have been tapped for some time, but “When the music’s flowing, it’s like water from a well”.

After the break, I sang “Green fields of Canada”, then it was Ecopella’s turn. Wonderfully polished as usual, they started with Leon Rosselson’s “Across the Hills”. They did a lovely rendition of one of Tony’s songs “Come away with me”, a song which was originially intended as a love song, but which evolved into a song about the environment. Other highlights included “Everything Goes”, a new twist on the old Cole Porter song, “Restless”, an amazing product of the songwriting skill of Miguel Heatwole, “The People are scratching” by Pete Seeger, and one of my favourites, the beautiful “Fragile” by Sting. Pity if you missed this night - it was a good one!
