Tue 4 October
Public Bar: FAME Trivia. win prizes, free entry 8pm.
Who wants to be a millionaire - well duh! While we can’t promise you a million bucks, you can win some beer and have a damn fine time showing the rest of us how brilliant you really are - and you don’t have to put up with Eddy McGuire!

Wed 5 October
Public Bar: Greyhound Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising - The Sound Debate, Dekker + Mosaik. 8pm, free.

Thur 6 October
Public Bar: The Gladeyes (NZ)

The Gladeyes are an independent band from Dunedin, New Zealand. Their debut EP What To Do? was released in Sept 03 through their label, ELP Records.

The Gladeyes spent most of ‘04 writing new material while drummer Stu Harwood represented the band in Europe, organising contacts and touring potential. A national tour in 2005 supported the What To Do? video release. The Gladeyes have begun work on their first full-length album, which they plan to release in November this year followed by a trip to London and Europe in December to promote the record.

The Gladeyes are partway through their first Australasian tour. Guitarist Chris Keogh describes their music as “a twisted, postmodern attempt at making light of pop music, which is only possible when you live at the very bottom of the world.” But don’t listen to him, he reads too much, think of it as hyper active pop to dance to. www.freewebs.com/thegladeyes

Fri 7 October
Bandroom: Damsel, The Mystaken + Remedy. $6, 8.30pm

The MYSTAKEN are Sally Bailey Guitar/Voc (Small Handgun), Maria Sokratis Bass/Vocals (Boyettes & Eye Creatures –Melb), Kati Bishop Drums (Oiska) & Andrew Horne Guitar.

These kids know how to rock. In a world where chicks in bands (some of ‘em anyway) are honoured for incompetence and egos are larger than balloons in the Macy’s Parade, here’s some kids who don’t give a fuck about anything but the rock. Formed in ‘99, The Mystaken’s 1st release Life’s Never Been So Real out on Rock Against Bullshit has been a long time coming. After slogging it out and playing countless gigs this has been worth the wait.
The band has played with international acts including The Detroit Cobras, The Bangs, 5678’s, Super Snazz, Dr Explosion and also featured on the Live and Local stage at the last Livid festival in 2003. They have also supported an array of dazzling (for want of a better word) local talent including Rocket Science, The Drones, Neon, The Meanies, The Casanovas, Powdermonkeys, Spencer P Jones and many more. Performing a number of live to air shows on Melbourne’s 3PBS and 3CR, they have cultivated a loyal following of anyone who listens.

The Mystaken have appeared on a number of compilations including The Lobotomizer Tapes (3PBS Fave Bands), Wild About You (Australian bands paying tribute to their fave 60’s garage hits) and have released a 7inch single through Corduroy Records titled “Don’t Fuck Wiv Me”. In the near future the band will leave on a jet plane for Europe where interest sparked by the debut single in 2000 has yet to fizzle out and will burn faster and harder as soon as the Europeans get a load of the latest release. www.themystaken.com

Sat 8 October
Public Bar: The Dice Age. Free 5pm.

Cabarock band The Dice Age have re-constructed their live show to perform a club show at the Greyhound. The show will see front man Tim Rolfe (Exotics) pulling on 2 extra strings to take total artistic control as guitar slinger as well as lead singer. The rhythm section will be complemented by local session hotshot Matt Duffy on bass (The Seedy Three).

” Taking on guitar duties is a bit like arming a child to fight a civil war ” said Rolfe, ” It’s not your first choice , but it can be quite effective, especially if you know the territory. ”
The Dice Age also welcome a new Diva of Dice, Chloe Wilson (Mo Tunes) who has temporarily retired from churning out Motown hits to forge a career in Cabarock. The Dice Age roadtest the new dance steps and the Feng Shui on stage in the Public Bar of the Greyhound.

Bandroom: The Drag Show. $8, 8pm.

Sun 9 October THE BEST SUNDAY IN TOWN!
Public Bar: COUNTRY CAPERS with The Vagrants. 5pm, free.

Getting compared to Ben Harper, Black Crows, The Allman Brothers, Baby Animals, The Stones and Jack Johnson says a lot about how the music that The Vagrants deliver, and it’s been going down a treat with Melbourne punters at various venues around town.

The Vagrants features James Spitfire on guitar, Renate Ludwig on voice, Steve Cookie Iorio on lead guitar, Brett Spicer on drums and new kid Ollie Davey on bass.

The Vagrants are currently working on their debut album, due for release very soon. The album is being mixed by American ex-patriate Rob Feaster, who has worked with the likes of Jack Johnson, Bush, No Doubt, Bruce Springsteen + Whitney Houston - to name just a few.

Needless to say, The Vagrants are very excited to have him on board, and the recording is going exceptionally well. Keep an eye out for more info in the coming weeks. www.vagrantmusic.com

Melbourne Fringe Festival comedy fundraiser

Filed under: Fundraising, Comedy, General — site admin @ 6:07 pm

THE LOST DOGS’ HOME
Melbourne Fringe Festival comedy fundraiser
this Sat 1 Oct. 4.30pm

The mid-season matinee performance of Joanne Brookfield’s stand up show ‘Princess Pissy Pants The Greedy Cheese Eating Bitch and Other Naughty Dog Tales’ will be a fundraiser for The Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne, this Saturday 1 Oct at 4.30pm.

The Melbourne Fringe Festival show, about the friendships we form with our pets, has also been collecting money each night from audience members.

Combining these audience donations at the end of each show plus the profits from a fundraiser show, the show raised over $1,100 for the Lost Dogs’ Home during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival earlier this year.

“I am very proud to say that we actually exceeded our fundraising target,” says Joanne. “The generosity of the audience shows the goodwill there is out there towards all those who work at the Lost Dogs’ Home and I was very happy to make a donation of my own as well. The goal now for Fringe is to do it all again but this time raise twice as much!”

A mid-season matinee performance of the show will be a fundraiser for the Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne. All tickets will be only $13 for the 4.30pm show on Saturday Oct 1, which is the Fringe’s ‘family friendly’ day so the performance will be suitable for the whole family. There will also be promo showbags full of goodies for every ticket holder.

More than 10,000 dogs end up at the Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne each year, making it the largest dog shelter in the state and third largest in the country. Almost half the dogs that end up in the home are re-united with their owners and new homes are found for another 1,500. The Lost Dogs’ Home run a 24 hour/7 day a week animal ambulance, offer free pet identification tags through their National Pet Register and help not just dogs in need, but cats and other animals as well.

The Lost Dogs Home is located at 2 Gracie Street, North Melbourne. More information www.dogshome.com

Guitar-a-thon Guiness WorldRecord Attempt - Hard Rock Cafe

Filed under: Fundraising, Festivals & Major Events, General — site admin @ 5:58 pm

The Hard Rock Café Melbourne is celebrating its 10th Birthday in October by hosting a charity event to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre - Kids Music Therapy Program. Our aim is to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for a “guitar-a-thon” which is the largest assembly of guitarists playing one particular song. We aim to have 2000 people, which will smash the existing record of 1322 set in Vancouver, Canada in 1994!

The event is being held on Saturday October 29th at 10.30am at the Museum Plaza at Melbourne Royal Exhibition buildings in Carlton. This event is a fundraiser and all money raised from the $5 entry fee will be donated in full to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. We hope to raise $10, 000, for the kids, so we need all guitarists - young and old, amateur and professional to get involved! Every guitarist who participates goes into the draw for some great prizes (including brand new guitar amps) plus other giveaways. The plan is to play Deep Purple’s classic - ‘Smoke on the Water” and the actual performance time will be approx. 5 - 10 minutes long. All entrants need to do is bring their guitar, register and be ready to play!

Registration will commence from 9am all entrants must register on the day and receive an official registration certificate. All forms of guitars are welcome in the attempt. Each performer will be required to play for five minutes and acoustically; no amps will be able to be used in this performance “Smoke on the Water.

Channel 7 is to film the “Guitar-a-thon” for its second series of Guinness World Records television program. Event sponsors include Billy Hyde’s, Gold FM, Pepsi, CD Online and Penfold Buscombe.

This is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity to play alongside some of Australia’s greatest guitarists and set a new world record at the same time!

From the stool of a piano Coldplay serenaded the world and it fell in love.

Australia’s quick-mouthed, flamboyant promoter, Michael Chugg, aka Chuggi and Executive Chairman of Chugg Entertainment, serenaded Coldplay. TV’s Rove McManus first teasered a tour announcement on his show of September 6, and today, having finalised months-in-the-planning negotiations, Michael Chugg has confirmed that the world’s biggest band will play Australia’s east coast State capitals next year.

Coldplay start at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre Friday 23rd June, perform Sydney’s Entertainment Centre Monday 26th June and move to the Rod Laver Arena at Melbourne Park Saturday 1st July 2006.

“We are still talking to the band about Adelaide and Perth but we need all the Perth and Adelaide fans to make a noise,” said Chugg.

Following similar strategies used by the band for its record-selling concerts world-wide, tickets for their Australian shows will go on-sale in a two tiered roll-out, selling first on Thursday 6th October 2005 to the Australian fans who have pre-registered on Coldplay’s official website, and then opening to general on-sale the Monday after (10th October).

Tickets will go on sale with a strict eight-ticket-per-transaction limit.

“Their [Coldplay] concert in Belgium sold out within an hour, and a purchase every second was recorded,” said Chugg.

“The eight ticket limit is a way of helping as many fans as possible get a fair go at purchasing tickets and is an attempt, as best we can, to help reduce scalpers and ebayers (sic) who buy up big and re-sell at ridiculously inflated prices.”

When asked what fans could expect of the concert, Chugg answered, “Big!

“There’s an incredible light show, two levels of panoramic video screens, live footage and computer graphic projection, strobes, pillar-mounted spot lights, balloons, Chris gets out-there amongst the audience on a special stage thrust, and even fireworks maybe?

“One critic in the US wrote it was ‘a big ol’ rock spectacle along the lines of U2 in the mid-1980s’, another one said that their stage show was a ‘whole new level of bombast and grandeur’, and I read a fan-posting on the net that said, ‘Never in my life have I seen a show like this! My goosebumps had goosebumps.’ I echo all sentiments.”

The band themselves recognise there’s competition for the concert dollar and want to make sure fans are rewarded for their investment. Bassist Guy Berryman told a US publication earlier this month, “We’re not over the top, but we’re on a much grander scale. We wanted to keep it as tasteful as possible and good from beginning to end. Every song has a different mood and different look, whether we do that by lights or visuals on the screen. It’s a really varied production.”

Front man Chris Martin quips that they’re not quite Bon Jovi yet though, and says at the moment they prefer to play indoor gigs rather than stadiums. “We don’t feel we can really make the most of that space yet.”

Less than ten years since the Brit-quartet, which comprises front man Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, drummer Will Champion, and bassist Guy Berryman first rehearsed in Jonny’s bedroom on January 6 1998, and did their first gig two weeks later, Coldplay have tinkled their way to music domination.

Before they were the biggest band in the world, Coldplay flew through the charts with their debut album Parachutes (2000) and the world floated on their achingly beautiful music. Coldplay were the first group to win the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Act two years in a row (2001 & 2002) and have won four in total, including the prestigious Record Of The Year in 2003 for Clocks. Chris Martin is recognised as the world’s sexiest vegetarian and in 2003 was named NME’s Sexiest Man In Music. Coldplay chose Sydney for the recording of their first ever live DVD (July 21 & 22, 2003) and it was released as a 2-disc set, Coldplay Live, in November that year. They released their sophomore album, A Rush Of Blood To the Head, in 2004 and this year’s July release of X&Y propelled them to superstratospherestardom. It went #1 in more than 30 countries around the world and was the fastest selling rock album in the US this year. It went double platinum within a month and has currently sold seven million albums worldwide.

Coldplay have rocked the world slowly. They’ve rocked the world gently.

Put simply, they rock.

This will be THE tour of 2006.

The Bells; Miraculous Mandarin
Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir
Melbourne University Choral Society with
VCA Symphony Orchestra
5pm Sunday October 2 Melbourne Town Hall

Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir on October 2, presents two twentieth-century masterpieces: Rachmaninov’s choral symphony The Bells, and The Miraculous Mandarin - Bartok’s brutal and erotic ballet music. Australia’s oldest choir teams with many of Melbourne’s finest budding musicians and artists, to give audiences a unique opportunity to hear two thrilling works and to see new digital animations.

For the first time RMP Choir with Melbourne University Choir will join forces with the full Victorian College of the Arts Symphony Orchestra. RMP Musical Director and Conductor Andrew Wailes says “this collaboration of 220 voices with a full 90-piece orchestra has made it possible to present two thrilling masterpieces which have not been performed in Melbourne for over 20 years.”

The Bells Op. 35, by Rachmaninov uses a Russian translation of a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, set to a score for soprano, tenor and baritone soloists, large chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the seasons of life from exuberant youth to the tolling of the death knell. Its inspiration is not only Poe’s poetry, but also the sounds of bells that Rachmaninov calls Œthe birthright of all Russians¹: “The sound of church bells dominated all the cities of the Russia I used to know - Novgorod, Kiev, Moscow. They accompanied every Russian from childhood to the grave, and no composer could escape their influence”.

Wailes describes it as lusciously symphonic and unmistakeably Russian. “It was Rachmaninov¹s favourite work - he considered The Bells to be his finest work and its premiere in Moscow in 1913 to be the greatest triumph of his career.”

Soloists in The Bells will be renowned operatic tenor Richard Greager, baritone Douglas McNicol and soprano Mylinda Joyce. Originally from New Zealand, Greager has sung a wide variety of roles in opera houses all over the world. Of his Peter Grimes for Wellington City Opera, a critic wrote: “Richard Greagher’s portrait of Grimes must be one of the finest of an illustrious career, beautifully catching the complexity of the
tormented fisherman. One felt the expressive weight of every note of Britten’s line.”

The Miraculous Mandarin, to be conducted by Marco van Pagee, shows Bartok at his most brutal and erotic, using unusually large orchestral forces. The clarinet portrays the erotic dances of a young girl to entice the Mandarin. This is some of the most lascivious concert music to be found it makes Salome’s Dance sound very tame. Composed between 1918 and 1919 and orchestrated in 1923, the work shows a marked intensification in Bartok¹s mastery as a composer. Brilliant in its colours and dazzling in its rhythmic complexity, this work promises to provide a stunning contrast to Rachmaninov¹s work.

VCA¹s School of Fine Art, School of Film and Television and School of Production have specially created a sequence of new images (stills and animated film) to be projected at the concert.

Conductor VCA Symphony Orchestra Marco Van Pagee says this upcoming event is a world first for the Bartok ballet music- “this is the first time the Miraculous Mandarin has been visualised through multimedia. The ballet is both violent and erotic and lends itself to this type of collaborative project.”

According to Andrew Wailes, the concert promises to be a highlight on the musical calendar in Melbourne this year: “It is rare that two such technically demanding and spectacular works are presented on the one program:

The Bells, and The Miraculous Mandarin will be performed at 5pm Sunday October 2, Melbourne Town Hall Tickets are $39 (adult) or $50 (premium), $32 (sen/con), $30 (student), $15 (15 years and under). Bookings: Ticketek 132 849 or direct on 03 9419 1582.
