Mikelangelo Song of the Outlaw…Johnny Cash

Filed under: country music, Gigs, General — site admin @ 11:50 pm

SONG OF THE OUTLAW
I’m gearing up for a big weekend debuting my new show, The Song Of The Outlaw, honouring that most wonderful, deep voiced Man in Black - Johnny Cash! It will be the 10th anniversary of Johnny’s death in September, and I couldn’t let this milestone pass without paying tribute to him in my own way. The world premiere will be this Saturday night at 7.30 pm at The Substation in Melbourne’s wild west.

The 1st half of the show I will perform my favourite CASH songs and interpretations solo, then for the 2nd half of the show I’ll be joined by Felix Potier on electric guitar and Tyron Shaw on doublebass. They are two thirds of a great band called The Rechords who I strongly urge you to check out, they are one of my faves! I’ll also be joined by the divine St Clare for our favourite Johnny and June duets. Just wait til you hear the version of ‘Jackson’ that we’ve cooked up, it simmers like a fever…

Melbourne Writers Festival is thrilled to present Tavi Gevinson, an online editor and feminist who encourages young women to embrace their complexity, for an opening weekend Keynote event.

Tavi is setting the world on fire with her unique brand of feminism and personal style. She has gone from bedroom blogger to founder and editor-in-chief of influential website and print series, Rookie in just a few years.

Rookie attracted 1 million views within six days of launching in 2011, and has featured contributors such as Lena Dunham, Zooey Deschanel, Thom Yorke, Joss Whedon, Malcolm Gladwell, and Sarah Silverman. Tavi has also written for NPR Books, Vogue UK, and The Believer.

At just thirteen, Tavi was front row at New York and Paris Fashion Week shows. But her age isn’t a novelty – it’s what allows her to directly connect with a new generation of readers. Her magazine covers a range of topics, from feminism to pop culture to the teenage condition, and her truly unique voice reveals a keen intellect that isn’t afraid to slow down and contemplate everyday life in search of what it means to be a girl and a person.

Tavi inspires thousands of women and girls to embrace their individuality and eccentricities. She is out to prove that youth are capable of running the joint, that fashion and feminism can indeed be BFFs, and that it’s okay to figure things out as you go.

“I went to Paris fashion week for the first time when I was 13. People were confused about my being there for a few reasons; one was that I was a blogger. I think people were angry that someone younger than them had figured it out. They would talk about how inappropriate it was for someone my age to be at fashion week. But this is coming from an industry that fetishizes youth” Tavi Gevinson.

The Melbourne Writers Festival keynote event Tavi’s World, sees her in conversation with Estelle Tang. Gain an insight into Tavi’s world, discover teenagers finding their voice, why girls are awesome, and how Tavi balances school, publishing and her artistic life.

“I am thrilled to be welcoming Tavi Gevinson to the Melbourne Writers Festival. Tavi’s magazine Rookie is smart and stylish, and her own writing is insightful and unique. At 17 she is already an icon of this digital era, and I know our audiences will enjoy hearing about her take on writing, publishing, and how teenagers can find their voice”, said Melbourne Writers Festival Director Lisa Dempster.

The full 2013 Melbourne Writers Festival program will be launched on Friday July 19.
