MARILYN ROSE & THE THORNS LAUNCH “BLOOD” CHERRY BAR

MARILYN ROSE & THE THORNS LAUNCH “BLOOD” CHERRY BAR 4th MAY

Marilyn Rose and the Thorns are pleased to present their fandangled debut five track CD “Blood.” Recorded with music legend Ash Wednesday (Einstuerzende Neubauten/The Models) and Hamish Marr in their home turf of the murky swamp known as St Kilda in early 2013, Marilyn and her Thorns have been hatching laborious plans behind closed doors and will be launching their collection of words and sounds at Cherry Bar on May 4th.

Support acts are guitar virtuoso, fuzz queen, sonic chanteuse, primal mistress of pop Penny Ikinger with her band and The Falling Standards; a female powered rock trio featuring the unique, sensual, moody and lyrical songs of Melanie Harrison, Leila Boakes and Ruby Harrison.

Marilyn Rose and the Thorns emerged from the St Kilda live music community circa 2010. Vocalist Marilyn Rose Veil (Veil), guitarist Leon Storch (Smoke Machine), guitarist Rusty Tulek (Cold Harbour), bassist Colin Holst (Cold Harbour/Scourge) and drummer Jim Richter (Death Sentence/12FU) first met at the Greyhound Hotel in St Kilda during the front bar glory days. Together this is a rare and sensual explosion of vocals and a melting pot sound of unique rock and roll styles.

The band’s sound is emotive, dramatic and sorrowful, full of darkness and cabaret with elements of pop and avant-garde. Psychedelic guitars and a powerful rhythm section lay the foundation for Marilyn’s one of a kind vocal style. Imagine a combination of Shirley Bassey and Siouxsie Sioux.

The Thorns have played on stages large and small to enthusiastic crowds around Melbourne’s renowned live music scene at venues such as The Esplanade Hotel, The St Kilda Bowling Club, The Greyhound Hotel, Yah Yah’s, The Lyrebird Lounge, The Town Hall Hotel and The Great Britain Hotel as well as appearing on the local female band showcase gig known as “Goddess”.

Prepare to be seduced by the hypnotic vocals of leading lady, Marilyn Rose and rocked by the dark and dazzling musicianship of her band of Thorns as well as an assemblage of musical nomads at Cherry Bar on May 4th. Doors open at 8 o’clock and free entry.

Jeff Lang, Sun Rising The songs that made Memphis

Thornbury Theatre Gigs
FRIDA PEOPLE
Fri May 30
Not fitting safely into any genre, her work is a revolutionary blend of performance poetry, storytelling and social commentary. Candy’s words are spun with potency, passion, truth, and are quintessentially human, reminding us of both our frailties and tenacity and of current social affairs that bind us as global citizens.

Sun On The Moon
Fri July 4
Join us for a soulful celebration of James Taylor’s music as ‘Sun on the Moon’, a dedicated 10 piece band of long time JT fans, perform the songs of this iconic, 5 time Grammy award winning, singer-songwriter and guitarist. As musicians we rarely get the opportunity to play these great JT tunes on gigs, so we decided to create a band whose sole (soul?) purpose was to do just that. James Taylor has enriched our lives musically for over 3 decades and has proven to be impervious to the vagaries of musical trends.

Jeff Lang album Launch
Sat July 5
“In a world where music is diluted by money and plasticine, give thanks that Jeff Lang is out there… He paints pictures in sound.” Beat Magazine

“Jeff Lang is one of those people who has music dripping from his fingers.”
Courier Mail - Brisbane, Australia

“He explores sonorities as eclectic as they are stunning…Lang’s only reference point is himself, a unique singer-songwriter-guitarist who follows his own path.”
Le Soleil - Quebec, Canada

“Jeff Lang is, in my humble opinion, a national treasure, a truly gifted songwriter and an outstanding guitarist. He has been inspiration to countless Australian and internationally renowned roots artists and surely has a place in history as one of this generation’s finest.
He has really touched me and musically, I had a kind of revelation…”
John Butler, John Butler Trio

“We’re treated to moody atmospheric textures, ripping electric lap-steel riffs, delicate acoustic picking, trippy backwards leads, oddball percussion, throbbing tremolo, and unconventional lyrics – all of which Lang blends like some crazed sonic alchemist. “
Andy Ellis, Guitar Player Magazine, USA

Seth Lakeman with special guest Carus Thompson
Saturday April 19
Virtuoso fiddler & multi-instrumentalist, Seth Lakeman will be returning to our shores in 2014. His undeniably compelling and energetic performances captured audiences around Australia over the last 2 years.Things move quickly for Seth, his second album, “Kitty Jay”, was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2005, and his follow up album “Freedom Fields” went gold and saw him branded the ‘Poster Boy of Folk’ (much to his exasperation). But there’s so much more to his music than the ‘poster boy’ tag allows. For his latest album, “Tales from the Barrel House”, Seth has not only written all the songs for this album, but played every musical contribution himself as well as producing and mixing it in its entirety. With 6 albums under his belt, “Tales from the Barrel House” underlines Seth’s innate knack for writing both foot-stomping, sing-along songs and more tender, thoughtful ballads. His playing is breathtaking and Seth’s trademark, soaring vocals are at the forefront of this album, as beguiling and haunting as ever. As well as the cello, banjo, guitars, bouzouki and viola, there are the unusual sound effects on this album of a Salvation Army drum, clanking chains, an anvil, bellows and a railway track being thumped.
Credited with bringing his own brand of indie-folk to a whole new audience, Devon born Seth Lakeman’s talent is undeniable onstage. His charisma and energy will entrance and enthral his growing army of present-day fans and undoubtedly captivate lovers of heartfelt music. The celebrated folk singer-songwriter and virtuoso fiddler will be returning to Australia with his seventh album in tow Word of Mouth set for release in February this year.

Paul Reid Vines Album Tour

Filed under: acoustic music, CD Launches — site admin @ 10:29 am

Paul Reid is pleased to announce the release of his debut ep and upcoming tour dates for his five-song EP Vines!
Having just returned from playing a successful string of shows with a crack backing band in capital cities on the East Coast of Australia, Paul is now ready to unveil his glistening, silver-toned songs for your pleasure.
‘Vines’ is the result of a three year story for Paul; travelling, working and meeting new people that have had a long lasting effect and influence on the song writing and lyrical makeup of the record.
“The audience are really digging the new ep and the live shows are going off! The band have really brought my songs to life and we’re having a great time with it,” said Paul.
Paul Reid has been showcasing his songs in Melbourne and regional Victoria for the past three years, often performing as a solo troubadour and sometimes with full band.
2013 saw the release of his debut self-titled three track EP and guest appearances on independent radio stations and street press magazines. Paul released his first music video for his ariose single ‘Seeds and Water,’ a career milestone last year.
‘Vines’ was recorded at Oxygen Studios and Milk Studios with Braiden Michetti of three-piece alternative band Sleep Parade.
