Australians for Peace are proud to present their ‘Wishing Trees Peace Day Project’ to commemorate the UN International Day of Peace.
Set in the heart of Melbourne at City Square on Sunday, September 21, olive trees will line the square and Australians For Peace (A4P) extends an invitation to the people of Melbourne to write their messages of peace on shipping tags, which will adorn the trees. The event runs from 10AM to 3PM and will be opened by Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Susan Riley. There will also be acoustic performances at this carbon neutral and family friendly event.

Trees have historically been used as an object for wishes throughout the ages worldwide and across many cultures and have even been identified as possessing special spiritual values. The olive tree was chosen because its branches have been a symbol of peace since 5th century BC and ancient Greeks believed that it drove away evil spirits.

A4P Chairman Mike Zafiropoulos AM, said “Melbourne’s population is made up of more than 240 national backgrounds and represents almost all the cultures and faiths of the world. We are recognised worldwide as one of the world’s most liveable cities. As a truly multicultural society we are uniquely placed to be an example to the rest of the world as a peaceful and cohesive society. Association

We are partnering with like-minded organisations and individuals including the UN Association of Victoria in the hope that Melbourne can truly become known as a “City of Peace”.A4P is a group of Melbourne individuals from varied backgrounds, who are inspired and encouraged by the belief that living in a peaceful world is a fundamental human right.

A4P has partnered with the UN Association of Victoria to host other activities to celebrate UN International Day of Peace, including a free lunchtime concert at Federation Square on the 19th of September and the inaugural Red Hot Peace gig at Toff In Town on the 21st of September. Further information will be announced in coming days.
A4P is grateful to the Victorian Multicultural Commission for their financial support for this initiative.

Austin Texas native Thomas Hugh

Filed under: acoustic music, blues music, Live Music Venues, CD Launches, Gigs — site admin @ 8:48 am

Austin Texas native Thomas Hugh will play songs from his sparkling new ep Sum = at Wesley Anne at 8pm on Friday 26 September. Tickets are $15 on the door and the door price includes a copy of the 5 song ep.
Sum = is a combustion of new-folk and indie pop, with old time storytelling and the occasional grand flourish thrown in for good measure. A recent import to Melbourne, Thomas relocated in 2008 and the five songs on ‘Sum =’ are a rich blend of the influences of the two colourful musical cities Thomas has inhabited for most of his life.
Thomas said, “I’ve been away from Austin for a few years now but the first thing I do when I get there is hit a cool blues bar like the Continental Club and drink beer made in Texas. There’s nothing quite like it, but Melbourne is a great city with its own character. Of course, the traffic is just as bad.”
Sum = was recorded with Roger Bergodaz (drums), Dean Addison (bass) and Shannon Bourne (guitar). It creates a sound that hints at a solid blend of excellent musical influences and a natural affinity for melody and telling a twisted tale.
