Hello and Happy New year!
We hope you are enjoying 2015.
Look what the amazing József Trefeli from Compagnie József Trefeli in Switzerland has to say about us!
“VARDOS are the be-all and end-all of high energy music in Australia. This trio of powerful performers take the audience’s eyes and ears on an extraordinary musical journey around Eastern Europe. Alana, with her dynamic gusto on lead violin, whips the band into a frenzy to deliver tune after tune of uplifting musical moments. Kirri drives the bass-line through each song with chutztpah and oomph from her double bass that you can feel from your guts all the way down to your feet while Sofia bounces from accordion, to song, to viola for a varied multilingual, multi-instrumental show. Irresistible: don’t be surprised if you find yourself dancing. This extravaganza of gypsy music is not to be missed! ”

Here are some upcoming and varied Vardos events to kick off 2015. We start in Sydney.

Jemma & The Clifton Hillbillies

Filed under: bluegrass music, rockabilly music, acoustic music, blues music, CD Launches, Gigs — site admin @ 12:30 pm

Jemma & The Clifton Hillbillies are pleased to release their debut single Fighting Mad which they will be playing for your listening enjoyment from 4pm every Sunday in January at Yarra Hotel Abbottsford!
Fighting Mad is unashamedly a love song, but it’s not a sugary confection about sunshine and lollipops.
Mix equal parts confession, devotion, desire, jealousy and insecurity. Then stir in a little self destructive behaviour - you know, the kind that only love can provoke - and you’ve got it.
i’m, fighting mad
you’re, you’re bleeding blue
i can keep you up all night
chase you round until i’m right
cos i’m, mad for you
i’m mad for you

Although Jemma & The Clifton Hillbillies wear their hearts on their sleeve, they are more than the sum of their parts and a surprisingly ambitious lot. Not one of
them actually resides in a trailer.Jemma & The Clifton Hillbillies started life as Jemma & Her Wise, Young, Ambitious Men, a longwinded and slightly ridiculous name derived from Lefty Frizell’s classic song Saginaw Michigan. They’ve played around Melbourne since 2012 in various guises and this year have renamed themselves and added a few new members to create The Clifton Hillbillies.

Jemma Rowlands - singerwoman & hands on hips holder
Sean McMahon - guitar & vocals
Ben Mastwyk - banjo & vocals
Cal Walker - bass & vocals
Josh Duiker - drums
Jason Bunn - fiddle

Their much-anticipated first album has a lively jamboree feel and features lusty singing, rich instrumentation including twanging pedal steel, harmonies aplenty and a guest appearance by Ben Franz.
The album also features Kate Alexander and Flora Smith.

Bar Open Gig List Jan 2015

Melbourne sextet The Gun Barrel Straights are set to release their first double a‐side single ‘She’s Moving Home’ / ‘Murder Blues’ at Bar Open, with supports from Goatpiss Gasoline (featuring Van Walker) and The Drunken Poachers. She’s Moving Home is an ode to small towns and the past that comes alive when you set foot back in the place after years away. It’s all wrapped up in a tasty country‐pop morsel with mandolin strut and sunset harmonies. Found somewhere on the shoulder of Highway 61, Murder Blues sends vibrations to the feet and bow‐legged shaking to the legs. Someone’s gotta die, but who’ll eat the lead?

live from downstairs in the beergarden

The Scrimshaw Four are a high energy, jazz/bluegrass band from Melbourne, featuring Banjo, Guitar, Violin and Double Bass their live show will make your feet fall off from dancing so hard. Described as “Gypsy Doof Doof” The Scrimshaw Four have been busking and performing almost in every location possible, up and down the coast of Australia, there isn’t a show where The Scrims wont get everybody up and jiggin’ around. Come see them at Fitzroy’s Bar Open for a rare two sets in the beergarden on a Saturday arvo. Perfect.

Whether it’s an electro-glitch soundscape to a juggling act, bombastic brass to an aerial routine, or good ol’ fashioned rock’n’roll to a BMX tearing up the stage, the multi-skilled, multi-genre Circus Oz Band has a riff for every occasion. Having travelled the globe clowning around and rocking out, the Circus Oz Band returns to Bar Open, this time minus the acrobatics but with a full dose of ROCK!

And then… Holy hole in a donut Batman, it’s Johnnie and the Johnnie Johnnies. Surfariffic, you say? Hotter than a flambé of flaming flamingos, these cats jive like a sack of coconuts in the groove yard. With boss skins, bass that’s cherry, and guitar solos to explode your eyeballs and bamboozle your eardrums, it’s Hammond cheese on toast, Daddy-O. The forecast? Gnarly, with a chance of overdrive. Johnnie and the Johnnie Johnnies, with the Circus Oz Band. You’ll dance like a Berocca in a Soda Stream.

Sunday sessions is a big night of Hip Hop and reggae at Bar open this Sunday night, feature hot young Melbourne things Saki, Bastian Killjoy, Seeka, New Dub City and Ree Jay. Armed with DJ and live drummer, Saki’s true abilities excel with an infectious stage presence proving that his work does not end in the studio. The perfect way to ease your way out of the weekend.
