The Beggars Sing The Seekers
Sat April 18
The Beggars Sing The Seekers is The Beggars Tribute to The Seekers wonderful fifty year career. Can an Adelaide Folk trio in 2014 be the 1960’s London based international hit making machine? Of course they can.
“The best Australian vocal band since the Seekers” Normie Rowe [Australia] 2011
From their early days in the Melbourne cafe scene to London, swinging centre of the 1960s pop universe, The Seekers rode a rollercoaster of pop/folk hits! In 1968 their BBC TV breakup special Farewell The Seekers broke TV viewing records and their popularity has not faded with the years. Following in the great Aussie tradition set by Dame Nellie Melba and John Farnham, The Seekers have broken up and reformed countless times.
Iris DeMent (USA) with special guest Pieta Brown (USA)
Thu May 28
Considered “one of the finest artists of her generation”, Iris DeMent has established herself as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music. Her debut album ‘Infamous Angel’ was deemed an “essential recording of the 90s” by Rolling Stone and the NY Times said it “distills love, heartbreak, disillusionment and humour in songs that go straight for the heartstrings.” Its 1994 follow-up, ‘My Life’, earned a Grammy nomination in the Contemporary Folk category. 1996’s ‘The Way I Should’ addressed political as well as personal themes and also earned a Grammy nomination. 2004′s ‘Lifeline’ was a collection of traditional gospel songs that she sang as a child growing up in a Pentecostal household. In 2012, she released the critically acclaimed ‘Songs From The Delta’ twelve self-penned compositions that the Boston Globe called “a work of rare, unvarnished grace and power”.
Gordie Tentrees (CAN)
Thu March 5
International touring award nominated Canadian artist Gordie Tentrees is coming to perform at The Thornbury Theatre on the 5th of March, 2015. Tentrees performs 200 concerts in 11 countries each year and has toured with Kelly Joe Phelps, Steve Poltz, Fred Eaglesmith, and Mary Gauthier.
“Tentrees delivery is so relaxed and unpretentious it’s impossible to not get drawn into his world. Sounding like a younger John Prine” No Depression (US)
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, and raised on his family farm in Bancroft, Ontario, Gordie Tentrees has spent the past 15 years working on his craft while hiding out in Whitehorse, Yukon.
Melbourne Ukulele Festival
Fri March 13 - Sat March 14
Yes, the sixth annual M.U.F is just around the corner and ready to storm the Thornbury Theatre with a happy riot of ukuleles! Presented by Melbourne Ukulele Kollective, this two day festival features performances by The Nukes (NZ), Funkalleros, Victoria Vox (US), Ralph Shaw (Can), Ukulele Russ (Alaska), Ukulele Ladies, The Pockets, Tyrone and Lesley, Black Orchid Stringband and Melbourne Ukulele Kollective.

Tony Joe White
Wednesday March 18
The Swamp Fox, Tony Joe White, is a bona fide legend of the music game that has been honing his craft for the best part of 50 years. And it will be on display once more as he returns to Australia for an 18 date tour that will see him play shows in Sydney, Dee Why, Cronulla, Hurlstone Park, Coogee, Bulli, Kincumber, Newcastle, Medlow Bath, Devonport, Melbourne and Newport. The tour will also include appearances at Boogie Festival, Forth Valley Blues Festival, Blenheim Festival and Byron Bay Blues Festival. Tony Joe White was literally born for the blues, the part-Cherokee musician being brought up as part of a big brood on a cotton farm in Louisiana, raised on a diet of Lightnin’ Hopkins and local bluesmen, an upbringing reflected to this day in his evocative, haunting music and adding a veneer of authenticity to everything that he touches.
Z-Star (UK) and Jay Power
Saturday March 21
Z-Star (UK)
A molten core of Rock & Roll born in the flames of some ancient Soul, the wildest she-manic blues woman on the planet, Z-Star, will lead you into temptation with her electrifying collective. Expect to rock the funk out with dirty basslines, phat blues beats, raucous rock n roll guitars and soul soaked vocals. Zee’s raspy blues tones unleashed in her passionate delivery fill the skies with a buzz that seems to flow on tap from the source.
Jay Power
Combine slick beats and sassy vibe with vocal prowess and Jay Power is what you get. If you like soul, wrapped in pop, driven by funk and laced with Hip-Hop, then this show is for you. Jay’s new album is the kind of music the soul singer known for – with strong grooves and soaring vocals. This time though with an enigmatic twist that can only be experienced live.
Lucie Thorne & Hamish Stuart - ‘The Rushing Dark’ Single Launch
Sat March 28
Lucie Thorne’s new album, ‘Everything Sings Tonight’ is set for release on 1st June 2015. And to give us a taste of what’s in store, Lucie returns to The Velvet Room in duet with long-time collaborator & legendary drummer Hamish Stuart to launch the first single from the album, ‘The Rushing Dark’. The duo recorded most of this new album in Berlin late last year, and it marks a bold and musically adventurous new direction for the pair. They’ll be playing a selection of this new material alongside a swag of old favourites. Very special guest for this evening’s concert is troubadour sweetheart Jimmy Dowling.
The Waifs
Wed April 1
The Waifs hit the road again with tastes from their recently recorded forthcoming album.
It’s rare to have all members of The Waifs in the same corner of the world for such an extended period of time.
Having finished a string of dates at the end of 2014, Vikki, Donna, Josh, Ben and Dave have seized heir geographical togetherness to do what they love the most – write and play music.
G. Love & Special Sauce
Sat April 4
All the way from Philadelphia USA with their eclectic mix of laid back Blues, Hip Hop and R&B; the original line up of G. Love & Special Sauce are making their triumphant return! 20 years after the release of their self-titled debut album and 8 years since their last live performance together, the original line up of G. Love & Special Sauce arrive on the back of their 2014 album Sugar, breathing new life into their groove-heavy, Chicago-Blues infused brand of stripped down Rock and Roll. With the influences of Elmore James, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker and Lou Reed, the band has stripped themselves back to the old-school air of their first record with a mature and developed instrumentation without losing any of the unique, funky American Blues vibes that were the foundation the bands success.

Benny Walker ‘Through The Forest’ Album Launch
Fri April 10
Victorian Indigenous singer/songwriter Benny Walker is the real deal. His love songs and epic tales are mixed with passion for the land, the people and laid back grooves, all elements that emanate through his velvety vocals and sensitive delivery.
