CD Running Free - Joe Creighton

Joe Creighton has just released his 4th solo album Running Free which draws inspiration from his Soul, R&B, Blues and Gospel roots. Discerning listeners will hear threads of Al Green, The Temptations, Bobby Womack and Sam Cooke.

Growing up in Northern Ireland, Creighton was exposed to R&B and Blues in the local music scene in Belfast in the ‘60’s with bands such as Van Morrison’s ‘Them’ and across the Irish Sea, with The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Yardbirds and The Pretty Things.

The title track Running Free captures that idyllic childhood Creighton spent in the seaside town of Bangor, just outside of Belfast.

It is interesting to note that Creighton plays or has programmed practically everything on this new album including the drums and backing vocals, a brilliant showcase of his multiple talents. He did however get a bit of help from his mates Jimmy Sloggett on saxophone and James Black on keyboards and guitar. Sloggett made his mark with Max Merritt and the Meteors and Johnny O’Keefe in the early ‘60’s. Black of course is an Australian household name from his most recent time on Rockwiz but his time with Mondo Rock cemented him in Australian Rock History.

There is much anticipation surrounding this new album as his first album Holywell, released in 93, has stood the test of time with much critical acclaim and was recently re-reviewed as ‘A Buried Treasure’ in Brisbane’s Courier Mail. Creighton toured Hollywell across Australia in ‘94 supporting the Neville Brothers and subsequent albums have included Stranmillis Road in 2000, Falling Again in 2003 and a Compilation Album featuring three new tracks which was released in late 2013.

Creighton came to Australia from Northern Ireland in 1967 at the age of 18 and throughout the early 70’s lived in London and toured Europe before settling in Japan for two years where he received his first taste of writing and recording with electronica genius Dr Osamu Kitajima.

His first Australian band was ‘Melissa’ who recorded ‘Midnight Trampoline’ in 1971 and which has a cult following among young musicians still to this day. In 1976 he recorded the album ‘No Definitions’ with the band ‘Billy T’ who he formed with the legendary Ross Hannaford.

Creighton and Hannaford then hooked up with singer/songwriter Mark Gillespie to record the iconic ‘Only Human’ album. The success of this collaboration established an important part of Creighton’s career as a much sought after session musician that lead him to tour with John Farnham. Their musical relationship lasted 13 years and culminated with Farnham recording one of Creighton’s songs ‘The Time Has Come’ on the Chain Reaction Album.

Creighton has toured internationally with Kylie Minogue and Olivia Newton John and has shared the stage with such luminaries as Boz Scaggs and Sir George Martin and performed as a ‘Raylette’ with the legendary Ray Charles.Closer to home his work can be heard across many albums for artists such as The Black Sorrows and The Revelators, Crowded House, Lee Kernaghan, Rick Price, Tim Finn, Kate Ceberano and the late Mark Hunter and Billy Thorpe and most recently on the Grammy Award winning Best New Age Album ‘Winds of Samsara’.

With high regard from his musical peers, Creighton may once have been best known as a bass player and session singer but after the extraordinary success of his own show Into the Mystic -The Music of Van Morrison, he has undisputedly established himself as a most outstanding singer and performer, commanding audiences with his powerful vocals and charismatic delivery.

Joe Creighton is very much looking forward to sharing this new body of original material and to performing it live.

In recent years, he has toured internationally with both Kylie Minogue and Olivia Newton John.

Joe has also shared the stage with such luminaries as Sir George Martin, on his ‘All You Need Is Love’ tour, playing his Hofner bass and taking lead vocal on some of those great Beatles songs, and with Boz Scaggs on his Australian tour, as well as singing vocal backing as a ‘Raylette’ on tour with the legendary Ray Charles.

Recently the album was re-reviewed as “a buried treasure” in Brisbane’s Courier Mail.

BRIAN WILSON
Performing Pet Sounds & His Greatest Hits
The Palais Theatre, St.Kilda
Sunday, 3rd Apr 2016
Show: 6:00pm - Venue Opens

The legendary musician Brian Wilson, co-founder of The Beach Boys and the architect of the Californian sound, is coming to Australia to perform the resounding masterpiece Pet Sounds.
Labelled as one of the most influential albums of all time, Brian Wilson will perform it live in its entirety including the hits; ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’, ‘Sloop John B’, and ‘God Only Knows’ and his greatest hits. Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds is a rare, unforgettable live music experience spanning 2 Parts: Act 1: Pet Sounds and Act 2: His Greatest Hits and will feature his incredible band including original Beach Boys member Al Jardine and long-term member Blondie Chaplin.

Pet Sounds – the ground-breaking psychedelic Rock album, declared by Rolling Stone as the 2nd Greatest Album of All Time (second only to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club) – is the album that turned the industry on its head, broke all the rules and changed Rock’n’Roll history, influencing greats including The Beatles, The Who, Radiohead, Elton John, and REM. Wilson co-wrote, arranged, produced and performed on 9 consecutive gold albums that featured more than 2 dozen Top 40 hits including ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘California Girls’ & ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ to name but a few, all remaining celebrated classics, almost 50 years on.

The multiple Grammy award winner, who has been called the Gershwin of his generation, is a Rock’n’Roll, Songwriters and UK Music Hall of Famer, and cited as inspiration by luminaries including,Sir Paul McCartney, who acknowledged that Pet Sounds “was the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded ‘Pepper’”.

Brian Wilson stopped being a performing member of The Beach Boys in late 1964, apart from some rare appearances together, he went into the studio and almost singlehandedly produced The Beach Boys recordings whilst the band toured. Since that time Brian has continued his association with The Beach Boys on a recording basis as well as the odd reunion tour including the 50th Anniversary tour in 2012.
2015 has marked a triumphant return for Brian Wilson with a brand new solo release No Pier Pressure, proving his talents continue all these years later. Featuring his former Beach Boys band mates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, among other special guests and session all-stars, as well as Brian Fest – a star-studded tribute concert held in Los Angeles in April (including Norah Jones, The Flaming Lips, Boz Scaggs, and Heart’s Ann Wilson to name a few), a re-release of Pet Sounds, as well as the release of Love & Mercy – the commended biographical film about Brian’s remarkable life and creative process. It will be a magical celebration that ignites nostalgia, romance and sheer awe of the wunderkind songwriter’s incomparable genius; a not-to-be-missed show that that will transport you to the most exciting time of Rock music history.

Melissa Etheridge with guest Irish Mythen

Filed under: rock music, Gigs, Tours — site admin @ 2:18 pm

Melissa Etheridge
Wednesday 30 March 2016
with special guest Irish Mythen
@ The Palais Theatre St.Kilda

An Academy Award and Grammy winning artist, Etheridge, will take the stage to perform songs from her new album, This is M.E., as well as some of her greatest hits like ‘Come to My Window’, ‘I’m The Only One’, ‘Bring Me Some Water’, ‘Like the Way I Do’ and ‘I Want To Come Over’. Known for her iconic raspy, smoky vocals, profound lyrics and riveting stage presence; Melissa will share personal stories about her remarkable journey through life and the inspiration behind some of her most beloved songs.

Since Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, she has been nominated for 17 Grammys and won 2, as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘I Need to Wake Up’ from Al Gore’s renowned documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Etheridge even has her own star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame among her many accolades.

Melissa carved and led a niche in modern rock through her honest and courageous approach to song writing and performance. Early in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. It gave way not only to the world embracing both Melissa and her music, but an ally and champion for the LGBT community.
In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy telecast to sing ‘Piece of My Heart’ in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease.

Melissa’s latest album This is M.E. is her 12th collection of new material. The powerful lyrics, incomparable voice, indelible melodies, and blazing guitars could be from no one else. The opening track titled ‘I Won’t Be Alone Tonight’ holds some new meaning. Melissa collaborated with some of the most creative, inventive figures on the music scene on the album including Jerrod Bettis (Adele), Jon Levine (Nelly Furtado, K’Naan, Selena Gomez), Jerry Wonda (Grammy Award winning producer of the Fugees, Mary J. Blige, Akon)and Roccstar (Usher) at the forefront . She even enlisted the help of Neyla Pakarek, cellist from the folk rock band and Bluesfest alumni, The Lumineers, to contribute to a couple of songs.

Not only a Blues Rock megastar, song writing hit maker, and phenomenal guitarist, but tireless advocate for human rights and social change, Melissa Etheridge is a force, and a talent that will blow the roof off at her Australian shows this Easter.
