Neville Staple, also known as The Original Rudeboy, is credited with changing the face of pop music not only once but twice.
Neville Staple’s thirty-five year career in the music business is well documented, from the early days with The Coventry Automatics, The Specials & FunBoy3 in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, to The Special Beat and various other collaborations during his solo career from the ‘90s up to the present day.
Following on from the 2009 Specials reunion and Neville’s departure from the band in late 2012, he continues to be a forerunner of the ska movement, and continues to thrill audiences with his own excellent band, The Neville Staple Band, at venue and festival appearances worldwide.

“It isn’t hard to work out why The Specials lack energy on stage, it’s because Neville Staple took it with him” - Steve Oliver - Nottingham Post

Neville’s autobiography, ‘The Original Rude Boy’, was published by Aurum Press in the UK in May 2009. It is an amazing story that tells of Neville’s interest in music in the early ‘60s, his relationship with Pete Waterman (record producer, songwriter, radio and club DJ and television presenter) who he met at a club in Coventry and his rise out of hell into stardom.

Neville’s latest album with his band ‘Ska Crazy’ was released in May 2014, ahead of an extensive tour, which includes new material and some old ska classic covers. The album also features guest vocals from his wife Christine Staple and long time friend, DJ and Artist, Daddy Woody.
2015 was a very exciting year for Neville with relentless touring up and down the UK and playing many festivals including a headline slot on the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

2016 sees Neville hitting hard into the festival circuit again with yet another performance at Glastonbury Festival as well as many others. He continues to tour tirelessly across the UK, Europe and beyond including Australia and America and has plans to release a new album in the autumn.
Neville has a way with people, he cares about his audience and wants to give them a good time. In return, the crowd are word perfect on every song and each event turns into a party.

“Nothing came close to the sensational Neville Staple Band who really got the party started and had the masses dancing along” - Anita Merritt - Exeter Express & Echo

Neville has also worked on various collaborations over the years, including with The Talks, Flipron, Duplex, co-writing 4 tracks on The Mutants album ‘Rhythm and Punk Review’, tracks with The Dub Pistols and there are many more collaborations in the works.
“Out on his own, still pretty special” - Record Collector

Four Walls
A group show curated by Bethany O’Connor

Humans carve out spaces in multiple senses of reality, whether it be the physical space of a building, space in our memories, space in the digital realm of the internet, a sound reverberation filling a car park, or the space for trinkets in Grandma’s cabinet. The strict boundaries which once existed between such spaces have been blurred in recent years thanks to the onslaught of contemporary experiences with technology and the emergence of a so-called global community forged through globilisation. This exhibition aims to draw attention to variant experiences of reality understood through different spaces and the tension that exists between these spheres of realities.
The artists have considered both physical and immaterial spaces in order to understand how we experience such spaces, and how an artwork might exist in these spaces, particularly the space of Brunswick Street Gallery.

Choreographers, Stephanie Lake and Ross McCormack in Dancenorth’s

Filed under: Fine Arts, Dance, Gigs — site admin @ 12:56 pm

Australia’s acclaimed Dancenorth presents the Melbourne premiere of
If _ Was _
A double bill choreographed by Stephanie Lake and Ross McCormack

29 June – 2 July Melbourne @ The SUBSTATION
Following performances in Townsville, Mackay, Proserpine and Brisbane
Speak Percussion
Delve into the fanciful and illusory worlds of two extraordinary choreographers, Stephanie Lake and Ross McCormack in Dancenorth’s most recent double bill If _ Was _.

The challenge was set by Dancenorth Artistic Director Kyle Page, for each artist to select sound from the one sound score, create costumes from one pattern, utilise lighting from one design and work to a set duration. It is within these parameters that If_Was_ comes to life.

Stephanie and Ross are two of the most extraordinary choreographic talents of our time and they have each generated something profoundly different in response to the equal limitations,” said Kyle.
Multi award-winning Australian choreographer, dancer and director of Stephanie Lake Company, Stephanie describes her new work If Never was Now, as a surreal hive of buzzing life reflecting the beauty and brutality of the natural world.
“From marching automatons to wild hybrid creatures, this work and the dancers within it are continually transmuting and being affected by their rapidly changing conditions. It’s about survival, symbiosis and rebirth. Through intricate choreography and vivid imagery the dancers incubate a strange world of their own making with a desperate forward momentum.”

New Zealand born choreographer and dancer Ross McCormack’s new work ‘If Form Was Shifted’, is a collaboration between McCormack, dancers and composer Robin Fox to achieve a virtuosic reflection of the thought process structured through group manipulation.

“What interests me is to watch the body at odds with its purpose, this is where I try to orientate most of my movement. I see the body as a device grappling with its complexities and place, how it rather unnaturally manipulates itself is somehow spectacular yet also pathetic,” said Ross.

Ross has worked extensively with Alain Platel at Les Ballets C de la B in Belgium. Other companies include the Douglas Wright Dance Company, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Australia’s Chunky Move, Australian Dance Theatre and Lucy Guerin INC and Dancers.

Dancenorth is a contemporary dance company based in Townsville, making new, bold, critically acclaimed work. As a major champion of the arts, Dancenorth balances a dynamic regional presence with a commitment to creating compelling professional contemporary dance that tours the globe, development opportunities for local dancers and choreographers and national and international residencies and exchanges.

Stephanie is multi award-winning Australian choreographer, dancer and director of Stephanie Lake Company. Her major works including Double Blind, DUAL, A Small Prometheus, AORTA and Mix Tape have been presented by Melbourne International Arts Festival, Sydney Festival, Dance Massive, Arts House, Sydney Opera House, Theatre National de Chaillot (Paris), Theater im Pfalzbau (Germany), Dublin Dance Festival, Tramway (Glasgow), Singapore and Aarhus Festival (Denmark) among others. In 2014 Stephanie was awarded both the Helpmann Award ( A Small Prometheus ) and Australian Dance Award (AORTA) for Outstanding Choreography. She also won the Green Room Award for Mix Tape in 2011. In 2013 Stephanie was appointed inaugural Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc, which included working as Guerin’s choreographic assistant at Lyon Opera Ballet. Stephanie received a prestigious Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship in the same year and the Dame Peggy Van Praagh Choreographic Fellowship in 2012.

Stephanie has been commissioned by Sydney Dance Company, Chunky Move, Tasdance, Stompin , Frontier Danceland (Singapore), Sydney Symphony and the Victorian College of the Arts. She collaborates across theatre, film and TV, visual art and music video and has directed several large-scale public works involving over 1000 participants. Her performance career spans fifteen years, touring and dancing extensively with Gideon Obarzanek’s Chunky Move and Lucy Guerin Inc as well as with choreographers Antony Hamilton & Byron Perry and Anouk Van Dijk. She was a founding performer in Phillip Adams’ BalletLab. The Stephanie Lake Company was established in 2014.

Ross McCormack is one of New Zealand’s leading next generation performance makers. His extensive career includes ten years performing with the acclaimed Belgian company Les Ballets C de la B. Throughout this time Ross maintained connections to New Zealand and Australia, choreographing and designing multiple works for companies in both countries and performing internationally with Chunky Move and Lucy Guerin. In 2014, upon being commissioned to direct and choreograph AGE for the New Zealand Festival, Ross co-founded Muscle Mouth. Ross designed, directed and starred in the company’s second work Triumphs and Other Alternatives, which premiered in 2015 to much acclaim, and recently exhibited new installations at Enjoy Gallery. In 2015 Ross was awarded the prestigious Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship.
