THA DOGG POUND (visiting artists: Kurupt, RBX and Roscoe)

Also known as D.P.G. (Dogg Pound Gangstaz), Tha Dogg Pound is a rap duo made up of Kurupt and Daz Dillinger. Signed to Death Row Records early in their careers, the duo were key to the labels success. The group made their rap debut in 1992 on various songs on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. They also appeared on Snoop’s classic Doggystyle, and the Death Row soundtracks Murder Was The Case and Above The Rim. Their solo, Dogg Food, was released in 1995. It went on to sell three million albums.

An extended family, referred to as D.P.G.C. (short for the Dogg Pound Gangsta Clique), has over time been made up of Daz, Kurupt, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Soopafly, RBX, Warren G, Tray Deee, Bad Azz, Lil’ ½ Dead, Lil C Style, Lady of Rage, E White, Goldie Loc, Roscoe, and Twinz.

KURUPT a.k.a. Young Gotti

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kurupt moved to Hawthorne, California as a teen to live with his father, eventually moving to South Central on his own. Before either became the infamous personas they are now acclaimed for, Kurupt found himself battling Snoop Dogg on the mike one night at a club. Each was impressed with the others skills, and they agreed that whoever achieved fame first would help other out. Sure enough, Snoop Dogg was eventually discovered by Dr Dre and signed to Death Row Records; soon after, Kurupt was also signed to the label and featured on Dre’s Chronic (1992) & Snoop’s Doggystyle (1993).

Kurupt debuted as one-half of Tha Dogg Pound, a partnership with rapper/producer Daz Dillinger, in 1995. After a
Kurupt returned to the long-quiet Death Row label in 2002 and helped Suge Knight revive the infamous label.

Kurupt’s power is his relevance. He is described as “.a Universal Emcee [who] has the agility to go against the grain and flow and bend with the times.” A revered lyricist with the ability to shut down anyone that comes up against him, his appeal lies in his ability to capture the essence of the ghetto experience, the expression of pain and personal struggle.

RBX
Cousin to hip hop luminaries Snoop Dogg and Daz Dillinger, RBX got a headstart on his hip-hop career in 1992 when Snoop introduced him to Dr. Dre. RBX was soon added to the personnel making this groundbreaking debut The Chronic. His rough voice and bizarre flow, which earned him the nickname of tha Narrator, made him, with Snoop Dogg, one of the most promising and recognizable MCs of the time.

ROSCOE

Roscoe (born David Williams in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a West Coast rapper from Hawthorne, California.

Roscoe’s brother, Tha Dogg Pound MC and former Death Row Records associate, Kurupt introduced Roscoe to the rap industry. At just 10 years old, he flew to California to watch his brother lay down tracks for Tha Dogg Pound’s debut album, Dogg Food. Inspired by the experience, he soon began to regularly meet with Kurupt on the road and in the studio, soaking in the West Coast beats while practicing his rapping skills.

Roscoe debuted on Kurupt’s Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha, aged only 15. Producer Daz was so impressed by the young MC he helped him put together his first mixtape, 2001’s When the Pain Inflict. Drawing favorable reviews from the underground circuit, Roscoe signed with Priority to release his debut album, Young Roscoe Philaphornia. Featuring seasoned producers like Organized Noize, Soopafly, and DJ Quik, the album was recorded and scheduled for release in 2002 but was pushed back for release until mid-2003. He recently released his second album I Luv Cali in May 2006.
