SCREEN SECT
A night devoted to rarely seen, obsessively loved and criminally neglected cult classics of cinema. Revisit old favourites, uncover hidden celluloid gems, indulge guilty pleasures, or just get yourself an education.
THIS WEEK: THE WITCHES (Nicholas Roeg, 1990)
A highly unlikely collaboration between Nicolas Roeg, Roald Dahl and Jim Henson (who provides the amazing special effects), results in a fascinating adaptation of Dahl’s story of a grandmother and grandson who travel to a resort hotel, only to find it infested with a coven of witches (led by a flamboyantly wicked Anjelica Huston), who have sinister plans for the children of England.

THE SNAPPERS
The Snappers was formed in early 2006 out of a desire to perform music influenced by barnyard animals. The sextet performs original material as well as selections from a broad array of styles from the 20’s through to the modern day. Although the group is a young rapidly aging ensemble, its members are no strangers to performing and touring and most have been doing so for more than ten years. As individuals these musicians have toured extensively accross the world in variety of musical contexts. In 2007 the band played jazz festivals and gigs in Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Holland and Northcote whilst 2008/09 has seen the band’s focus on playing locally at venues from Johnston St to Argyle St. This Saturday night is the product of their focus narrowing within these boundaries when they take to the stage of Bar Open for the first of two consecutive Saturday nights.
