Bar Open Gig Guide

Monday 8 th February
SCREEN SECT: American Movie (Chris Smith, 1999)
A strangely inspirational documentary, this follows the at-times comedic misadventures of manically driven Milwaukee film-maker Mark Borchardt, as he struggles against bad planning, financial hardship and an amateur cast and crew, to complete his independent horror film ‘Coven’. A must-see.

Tuesday 9 th February MAKE IT UP CLUB The Make It Up Club is committed to nurturing, presenting and promoting avant-garde improvised music and sound performance of the highest conceptual and performative standards, regardless of idiom, genre, or instrumentation. Whilst traditional forms of avant-garde improvisation are welcomed, MIUC programming policy gives priority to projects which challenge the boundaries of current musical trends and which are predominantly, though not exclusively, improvisational in nature.
This week’s performers are:
- Freya Schick-Arnott (cello) and Nic Tammens (electric guitar)
- Jonathan Heilbron (contra bass) and James Mclean (drumkit)

OPA! BATO
Boban Markovic & Goran Bregovic are choking on their cevapis! Saying what the heck is Opa! Bato!!!???? The answer is actually quite simple. Screaming horns and earthshaking rhythms. Opa! brings the unfettered sound of the Balkans to Melbourne. This is as close as you will get to the real thing without having to fly half way around the world. You will however be flying for the duration of the show and for some time after, so pack your bags. Everyone loves the good blowing of a horn, so get down and see what the hype is about with Opa! Bato, potentially the best Balkan Brass band in Australia. It’s a huge sound and mad fun. These guys are heading straight for the Gucha Festival so see them while ou still can, this Friday at Bar Open!

Saturday 13 th February
BARONS OF TANG
MAMUSHKA
Junk gypsy juggernauts are mutha farkin back at Bar Open this Saturday night and make sure that all in attendance will be well and truly done. Spawned from the fiery pits of Melbourne, cutting their teeth in the underground theatre scene and with the taste of blood on their lips, 7-piece ensemble The Barons of Tang bastardize mainly traditional gypsy and tango feels to inappropriate perfection. With accordion, double bass, saxophone and bass clarinet to name just a few, the outfit create what they call ‘gypsy death-core’. The catchy tunes and punk ethos all tie together to mean one thing … dancing is inevitable! Barons of Tang with special guests Mamushka this Friday for free entry at Bar Open.

The night is going to be particularly momentous since it’s the 5 year anniversary of Newcastle’s Drillbit playing his first show, which coincidentally was in Melbourne. What better reason to come back down to where it all began, catch up with friends and see what’s going on. And we get see what’s been going on in the world of Drillbit.
