Bendigo Art Gallery

Filed under: art — site admin @ 5:36 pm

Arguably one of the most revealing exhibitions to be seen in Australia for some time, Undressed: 350 years of underwear in fashion is showing at Bendigo Art Gallery until October 26.

Which means there’s just three weeks left to see these precious intimate garments, including Queen Victoria’s drawers and one of the earliest known bras.

The exhibition, a world premiere, features more than 80 garments from the V&A’s extensive collection of underwear, most not displayed before, and includes striking contemporary pieces by world famous fashion designs such as Christian Dior, Gianni Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood.

A highlight is the show stopping couture gown by Bottega Veneta worn by Emma Watson on the red carpet.

The exhibition includes corsets, crinolines, bustle pads, petticoats and brassieres as well as a select display of men’s undergarments and photography from the V&A’s own archive.

“Undressed offers an incredibly rare opportunity for audiences to explore the hidden aspects of fashion, from corsetry through to contemporary couture,” said Karen Quinlan, Director of Bendigo Art Gallery.

“We’ve loved the way press and audiences have responded to the show. The subject matter elicits a sense of fun, but the serious side, the historical value of the exhibition has also been noted.”

“Alongside our other current touring exhibition, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece, which displays precious Greek and Roman antiquities from the British Museum, we have two incredible shows, both from London, both offering unique but aligned perspectives on how humanity has worked with and felt about the human form through the passage of time.”

Undressed: 350 years of Underwear in Fashion is on until 26 October, 2014.
The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece is on until 9 November, 2014.

What the press are saying about Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion:

“…it’s the international premiere of Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion that stitches a new seam in the gallery’s sartorial sassiness. But rather than displaying garments in chronological order, the exhibition waltzes visitors into a romantic world of themes, fabrication and technological diversity.” – Jane Rocca, The Weekly Review

“Curatorially, an exhibition about underwear might strike you as hitting below the belt. But the large show of under-garments at the Bendigo Art Gallery, rifled from the drawers of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, proves that the theme is historically valuable and aesthetically imaginative.” – Robert Nelson, The Age.
