Bigsound 2010 announces more world-class speakers

Filed under: General — site admin @ 5:02 pm

More world class speakers sign on for Bigsound 2010

Australia’s biggest annual music industry event and festival – BIGSOUND 2010 – has added no
less than 40 international, national, and local speakers to this year’s conference line-up.

Staged in Brisbane from September 8-10, BIGSOUND 2010 will include three days of panels and
workshops featuring some of the brightest minds in the global music industry – making it this
year’s must-attend event for artists and industry alike.

Among the new group of speakers announced today are Australian born, New York based
producer Victor Van Vugt whose credits include records from Nick Cave, Beth Orton, PJ Harvey,
Athlete and Sarah Blasko; and artist, writer and producer Robert Forster. Best known as part of
seminal Brisbane band The Go-Betweens, Forster’s three-decade career has seen him become
one of Australia’s most revered artists, both here and abroad. He will close BIGSOUND 2010 with
a very special closing address.

Flying in from the UK will be Colin Roberts who is frontline artist manger with the UK’s Big Life
Management (La Roux, Klaxons, Richard Ashcroft) while running associated online PR and
strategy firm Work It Media.

He will be joined by Brett Williams from boutique US management company Monotone
Management. Brett personally guides the careers of bands including Cold War Kids and Delta
Spirit while Monotone is home to the likes of The White Stripes, Dead Weather, The Shins and
Vampire Weekend.

Also heading to Brisbane from the USA will be President of Bug Music, David Hirshland, who
oversees the operations of the independent publishing administration company’s five worldwide
offices. Bug Music’s roster of writers and catalogues includes the estates of Johnny Cash, Willie
Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Woody Guthrie; while also representing artists including Iggy Pop,
Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon and Wilco.

Among the dozens of other new BIGSOUND 2010 speakers will be The Middle East’s US
manager Rich Schaefer (The Artists Organisation); UK music writer, DJ and producer with the
BBC Jen Long; Jake Stone - journalist, broadcaster and artist with much-loved Australian band
Bluejuice; and the UK’s Catherine Bottrill who has taken a lead role in reducing the music
industry’s carbon footprint.

This latest batch of speakers joins the already impressive list of industry figures and artists signed
on to talk in Brisbane this September including: US author and journalist Michael Azerrad;
Chairman of the Mushroom Group Michael Gudinski; Australian industry legend John
O’Donnell; and iconic Australian artists Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus) and Ed Kuepper (The
Saints).

The event will also see 60 of the country’s most exciting acts perform across two nights and six
venues as part of BIGSOUND Live – the public festival component of the event. They include
Children Collide, The Vasco Era, Boy & Bear, The John Steel Singers, Parades, Ernest Ellis, The
Gin Club, Last Dinosaurs, Bridezilla, The Jezabels and quite a few more.

triple j’s ‘Unearthed” initiative will give one band the chance to showcase at BIGSOUND Live with
flights, accommodation, conference access and industry meetings all included as part of this
unique opportunity. Find out more at www.triplejunearthed.com
The event also continues its tradition of being the best-value music ticket of the year. Two-night
BIGSOUND Live passes – featuring access to 60 acts on September 8 and 9 – cost just $44
(+bf) with single night passes only $27.50 (+bf).

Tickets are on sale now with details available at www.bigsound.org.au
