BMW Ride For Life Challenge - call for riders
Star-studded lineup for 2010 Brisbane BMW and Westside BMW Ride for Life Challenge – call for riders out now
An all-star lineup of Australia’s best cyclists will take the lead on Sunday September 26 in the inaugural 2010 Brisbane BMW and Westside BMW Ride for Life Challenge, an 88km ride from Fortitude Valley to Cleveland, through Wynnum and Manly and back.
Organisers have put the call out now for riders of all levels to sign up and join 19 of the country’s elite cyclists on the Ride for Life with all proceeds being donated to Variety Queensland Children’s Charity and Next Gen (Next Generation cyclists).
Fly V Australia Pro-Cycling team members taking part in the ride include multi-award winning international rider Jonathan Cantwell and fellow Australian-based international riders Darren Rolfe, Hayden Brooks, David Tanner, Jai Crawford, Ben Day, Ben Kersten, Aaron Kemps, Bernie Sulzberger and David Kemp.
They will be joined by members from the Virgin Blue - RBS Morgans cycling team, Australia’s development team for the world-renowned Tour de France, including Peter Thomson, James Hepburn, Chris Pryor, Scott Law, Ben Dyball, Michael Frieberg, Rhys Gillett and Cameron Peterson.
The Ride for Life Challenge is a unique opportunity for cycling enthusiasts all over South East Queensland to rub shoulders with these elite cyclists on an organised ride around Brisbane and surrounds, while raising important funds for two very special charities. Corporate groups, local teams and individuals are encouraged to register now (while it is a social event, due to the nature and level of difficulty of the set course, it is not suitable for young children and casual riders) at www.bmwcycling.com.au
Cycling in Brisbane has gone from the few game ones who dared to cycle to work some 20 years ago, to an absolute phenomenon. In 2001 in Brisbane there were some 19,722 recreational cyclists, and in 2008 that figures had skyrocketed 124% to 44,183 – and the biggest increase of any capital city (source: Australian Bicycle Council).
Brisbane BMW & Westside BMW Managing Director Martin Roller noted, “Over 500 of our customers are avid cyclists so hosting this event, with the great support from these two elite teams, makes great sense to us. In addition, we have the opportunity to raise money for our local Variety organization through a sport we all love participating in!”
To bring cyclists entering the ride up to speed (no pun intended), Brisbane BMW and Westside BMW will host regular rides through their already strong cycling network. Details can be found at www.bmwcycling.com.au
The entry fee for the Ride For Life Challenge is $99.00 per person which includes a custom-designed jersey worth $75, brunch, entry fees and entry into the lucky door prize pool which includes a Merida Reacto 907 bicycle, worth $5,000, a Hillclimbr.com Santos Tour Down Under Cycle Package, worth $2,500 or a Studio Rise Simulated Le Tour De France, worth $1,320.
The event begins at 6.15am on Sunday September 26 at Brisbane BMW in Fortitude Valley, with celebrations also on site when riders return, from 10am. Organisers are encouraging the family and friends of all riders to be at Brisbane BMW to welcome the riders back.
