Ahoy, an adventure on the high seas awaits these school holidays!
Boats by Polyglot Theatre
Fed Square | 7 – 12 July | Free
Commissioned by Fed Square, Boats explores the ideas of migration and adventure in the last week of the July school holiday with activations taking place twice a day at 10am and 2pm.
Polyglot Theatre launch their brand new work, Boats a playful and interactive activity that encourages children to ’sail’ the cobbled seas of Fed Square.
Large and colourful vessels sit idle at a central mooring place within The Square until children brimming with imagination and energy board and set off on an adventure across urban seascapes.
Once aboard, the lightweight boats are propelled by a flurry of feet, with children taking charge, working as a crew to find their own path and voyage across the ‘high seas’.

As they make their journey, Polyglot artists float as castaways ready to be rescued or as mysterious elements of the deep blue sea. Together they guide the boats to safe harbour, ready for new crew and the next adventure! On another adventure, Polyglot captain the boat as children embark and disembark from jutting steps, tree islands and marine deckchairs.

The fleet consists of three, 4 metre long vessels made from light materials with a striking body constructed from painted and decorated canvas inspired by Javanese boats. It also includes 13 smaller 1.5 metre long boats that have been inspired by children’s illustrations.

Whilst sailing activity is aplenty in The Square, inside The Atrium people of all ages can make paper boats and add them to the growing flotilla. The boats in the flotilla can either be taken home by their creators, or tied up at the islands in the atrium as a growing installation. Commissioned by Fed Square, Boats explores the ideas of migration and adventure in the last week of the July school holiday with activations taking place twice a day at 10am and 2pm.
