BRUNSWICK MUSIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN 2008

Filed under: pop music, world music, rock music, Festivals & Major Events — site admin @ 7:56 am

In its 20th incarnation the Brunswick Music Festival celebrates in style with a line-up of the world’s best in world, folk and blues music, a spectacular opening night concert, classic films played to contemporary scores and as always the Sydney Road Street Party to get it all underway.

“From humble beginnings as a small community celebration of the diversity of cultures within the Moreland community, the Brunswick Music Festival has evolved to become one of Melbourne’s most enduring music festivals without losing its unique identity. This year’s line up is a cracker” John McAuslan, Festival Director.

Internationals
Ruthie Foster (US), Peggy Seeger (US), Elana James (US), Eddi Reader (Sco), Mamadou Diabate (Afr), Eric Bogle (Ire), The Duhks (Can), Genticorum (Can), Guy Davis (US) Bob Fox (UK), Truckstop Honeymoon (US) Martin Hayes (Ire) & Dennis Cahill (US) and Mike Compton (US).

Australian
Archie Roach, Zulya & the Children of the Underground, Shane Howard, Dave Arden, Vika and Linda Bull, Dan Sultan, Martin Martini, Counterfeit Gypsies, The Yearlings, Judy Small, Duck Musique, Circle of Rhythm, Fitzgerald Family Band, Headbelly Buzzard, Stiletto Sisters, Diana Clark, Doug de Vries, Rose Turtle Ertler and too many more to mention.

Opening night
The Festival opens with a fabulous concert that highlights cultural diversity in programming something that Brunswick is known for. To open the show we are delighted to present the musicians and dancers of Xianyang who are visiting as part of a cultural delegation from our sister city in China. This will be an extraordinary performance of the culture and art of one the largest of our Asian neighbours. The musicians and dancers of Xianyang will perform on the same bill as Zulya & the Children of the Underground. One of the most intriguing and unique acts in Australia. Zulya’s music defies pigeon holing, but has been described as “somewhere between Kurt Weill-ish Euro-Cabaret jazz and lullabies constructed to tear your heart out.” Their most recent album, 3 Nights, received the 2007 ARIA for Best World Music Album.

Sydney Road Street Party
Gets it all underway with a mini festival of world music on six stages. Cyndi Boste, Zydeco Jump, Musiki Manjaro and …

In keeping with the family friendly vibe, this year alcohol will only be permitted at licensed venues meaning that kids of all ages are entertained appropriately. A large children’s program is on two stages with over 30 bands throughout the day.
