Dozier is one of BMI’s most honored songwriters with over fifty-four #1 hits for such legendary artists as the Supremes, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and many others. As part of the legendary songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland, Lamont penned such legendary songs as “Baby I Need Your Loving” (9 million performances), “Baby Love” 4 million performances), “How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You),” “I Hear a Symphony.” “It’s the Same Old Song,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)” “Where Did Our Love Go,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.”

After signing to Berry Gordy’s hometown Motown label, the Sound of Young America, in 1962 as a triple threat, Artist, Producer and Songwriter. An inductee to both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and, the 2009 recipient of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame’s most coveted award, The Johnny Mercer Award for lifetime achievement, Dozier continues to push the envelope. Lamont Dozier continues to work with the best of the latest generation of artists, including Kanye West, Joss Stone, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, members of the Black-Eyed Peas, Solange Knowles and popular Grammy Award winning producer, Mark Ronson. One of Lamont’s proudest accomplishments is having been awarded the 2007 Thornton Legacy Award through the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. USC/Thornton also created a Lamont Dozier Scholarship in perpetuity for their students. Lamont is presently serving as an Artist In Residence Professor at USC/Thornton where is he actively involved in the new Popular Music Major, which is the first program of its kind in the country.

David Crosby: The Iconic singer-songwriter and social justice activist is a two time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, inducted as a member of both the folk-rock band The Byrds – with whom he first rose to stardom – and the Woodstock era-defining group Crosby, Stills & Nash. Crosby began his career as a folksinger, playing clubs and coffeehouses nationwide. Back in L.A. in ’63, Crosby formed The Byrds with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke, winning widespread recognition for his songwriting and charismatic presence. Driven by hits including “Eight Miles High,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” and a cover of Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” The Byrds’ signature electric folk-rock influenced countless musicians to come. Crosby left The Byrds in 1967 to embark on a lifelong collaboration with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. Renowned for vocal harmonies, stellar musicianship and timeless songs, Crosby, Stills, & Nash (CSN) have been called “the voice of a generation,” and were GRAMMY-honored in 1969 as Best New Artist. The trio’s self-titled debut album introduced classics including the Crosby-penned tracks “Guinnevere” and “Wooden Ships”-today, it is included on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Crosby continues to tour and record with CSN, as well as with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and as a duo with Graham Nash. As a solo artist, Crosby debuted with the 1971 masterpiece If Only I Could Remember My Name, recently reissued as a two-disc set featuring a 5.1 mix, video footage, and other bonuses. David Crosby also performs and records with CPR, the jazz-flavored trio he formed in 1995 with his son James Raymond and Jeff Pevar. Crosby is also the author of three books including Stand and Be Counted: Making Music, Making History/The Dramatic Story of the Artists and Causes That Changed America, which underscores his commitment to social activism, and belief that artists and musicians are potent agents for change. Crosby’s two autobiographical volumes are Long Time Gone and Since Then: How I Survived Everything And Lived To Tell About It.

The summer of 2014 marks several 50th anniversaries connected with the evening: in 1964 the writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland had an incredible run with three number one hits (“Where Did our Love Go”, “Baby Love,” and “Come See about Me”), the band the Byrds was formed with the nucleus of Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and David Crosby, (the Byrds would become universally recognized as one of the most influential bands of the 60′s); and especially important to the Fulfillment Fund and its students, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.

Event creator, Charles Fox, Fox is a Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Inductee and has composed the music for over 100 motion pictures and television films. For television he wrote the theme songs and scores for such iconic TV series, such as “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley,” “Wonder Woman,” “Love Boat,” and “Love, American Style” (for which he won 2 Emmy Awards for best song and best score).

His hit songs include the Grammy Award winning song, “Killing me Softly With His Song” that earned him the Grammy Award for best song as performed by Roberta Flack. That record also won the Grammy Award for Best Record of the Year and 20 years later the song became a worldwide hit again with the Fugees recording of it. His songs written in collaboration with Paul Williams, Norman Gimbel, Hal David, Bob Crewe, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Sammy Cahn, Carly Simon and other great lyricists have been recorded by such diverse artists as Lena Horne, Fred Astaire, The Fugees, Roberta Flack, Jim Croce, Barry Manilow, Goldie Hawn, Luther Vandross, The Boston Pops, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Carly Simon and Tito Puente and hundreds of others around the world. Charles has also composed ballets for The San Francisco Ballet, the Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Smuin Ballet, and the oratorio, “Lament And Prayer,” based on the words of Pope John Paul II. He conducted the premiere performance at the Warsaw Opera House with the Poland National Opera Company in August 2009. Subsequently, he was commissioned by the Polish government to compose a new work honoring the 200th birthday of Chopin.

A positive life cycle for kids

Variety Cycle Launch Event
Date: September 26th, 2013
Time: 6:30pm for 7:00pm until 11:00pm
Location: Doltone House, Darling Island Wharf, Pyrmont
Tickets: $180 each or $1,700 for a group of 10, includes cocktails, canapés, premium drinks, three course meal and entertainment.
For tickets and to book visit www.varietycyle.com.au or call 02 9819 1000.

As H.G. Wells once said, “Every time I see an adult on a bicycle I no longer despair for the future of the human race”, he would no doubt be heartened by the Variety Cycle, a new initiative to help kids in need, set to be launched with a gala fundraiser dinner at Doltone House on September 26th, 2013.

Given to such musings and his celebrated imagination, H G Wells would have been chuffed to see formally attired guests get on bikes to raise money for kids, at this very special event which will include a range of “revolutionary” activities not normally associated with a black tie event.

On arrival guests will be greeted and given a ride along the wharf to the venue in an assortment of bikes including tricycles, doubles, tandems and rickshaws. Then, in between their sumptuous three course meal and drinks, they will be invited to participate in a one minute exercise-bike challenge on stage to compete and see who can sprint the farthest.

Les Thomas ‘Survivor’s Tale’ debut album

Filed under: Fundraising, acoustic music, CD Launches, Gigs, General — site admin @ 4:17 pm

Les Thomas ‘Survivor’s Tale’ debut album campaign.
Through music fundraisers like These Machines Cut Razor Wire, in support of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, and Unpaved, a Melbourne music website dedicated to supporting great original music, Les Thomas has shown himself to be a generous and dedicated social and cultural contributor.

In a similar spirit, the focus of the songs of ‘Survivor’s Tale’ is on telling human stories of enduring adversity and injustice. Les manages to transform painful personal experience into songs with a message.
The title track is a moving gesture of love from father to son, that addresses the reality of divorce, but offers strength from knowledge of and connection to family and history.
‘Free Ranjini’ is a direct call for the release of Tamil refugee and mother of three currently held in indefinitely in Villawood Detention Centre.

The album’s first single ‘Song for Selva’ is based on a letter from an asylum seeker who suffered 37 months in detention away from family and asks if Australia can treat asylum seekers as worthwhile human beings.

In the current political climate, songs like these, that draw a lot of their inspiration from the greats like Woody Guthrie, can let people know they are cared, offering strength and hope to get through tough times.

Recorded over two years with help from world class musicians like Jeff Lang (three-time ARIA Award Winner), Ben Franz (The Waifs, The Stillsons), Ashley Davies (drums) and more, these songs are almost ready for release, but help is needed from people like you to reach the $7000 funding target! So please support Les’s Pozible campaign for pre-orders and other goodies and be a part of the story.
