THE POPES (UK)
Wednesday 20 June 2012 7:30pm
Formed originally by Shane McGowan, The Popes have long outgrown their creator to become their own monster, and one that takes no prisoners, giving the audience a polished and bravura performance of old favourites such as ‘Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down’ along with material from their new album, ‘New Church’, such as album opener, ‘Storming Heaven’. They play the sort of music that makes people, even clumsy and uncoordinated people like me, want to get up and dance. Songs like ‘Rock & Roll Paddy’, ‘Bastards’ and the almost ballad like ‘Outlaw Heaven’ are exactly how you think Irish folk would sound with a little bit of punk angst thrown in. As Paul ‘Mad Dog’ McGuinness stops one of the songs part way through in order to tell the fiddle player that he is Irish and should therefore speed up his playing, the whole room is smiling and dancing. http://soundcloud.com/thepopes/storming-heaven

WHEATUS (USA)
Wednesday 19 September 2012 7:30pm
Wheatus’ debut single ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ cracked the Top 40 BBC Official Sales Chart for a second time in March 2011 and again this year in April – TEN YEARS after its debut at #2 on the same chart. To date their first record has sold more than five million copies worldwide. Any manager or record label would be happy to tout those stats to the press but Wheatus have remained unsigned and unmanaged for the last eight years. Wheatus continue to write, record and tour 15 years after their inception, having released five studio albums since 2000 and currently in pre-production for their sixth. Now Wheatus are heading to Australia for their ‘Still A Teenage Dirtbag’ tour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC3y9llDXuM

It was the decade when frizzy perms and shoulder pads were hip, long lunches were tax deductible, the Compact Disc appeared in record stores, Cabbage Patch Dolls were born, we lost John Lennon, played Pac-Man and the Wall came down in Germany. A¬¬nd amongst all this, the Australia music scene was at its most exciting and prolific and the music from this era shaped a generation.
Born from the success of the Countdown Spectacular, The Absolutely 80s Show features some of the best Aussie pop icons from the 80s. The Absolutely 80s Show - a musical extravaganza of epic 80s fun and flashbacks - stars Brian Mannix (Uncanny X-Men) and Scott Carne (Kids In The Kitchen), who are joined by Dale Ryder (Boom Crash Opera), David Sterry (Real Life) and Eve von Bibra (Chantoozies) performing all their hits in one, massive show.
