Gospel Belles ringing, singing & swinging into Christmas
Award-winning Australian blues and gospel singer Kerri Simpson join Kelly Auty,
Marisa Quigley and Diana Wolfe for a one-off gospel Christmas show at the
Rainbow Hotel on Wednesday 21st December.
The “Gospel Belles” will be accompanied by legendary Australian pianist, Bob Sedergreen, and
will perform swinging interpretations of their favourite gospel songs in the African-American
tradition.
This is the first time these outstanding singers have joined forces and their show promises to
have everyone “singing, swinging and getting merry like Christmas” at the world famous
Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy.

The Gospel Belles are:-
Kerri Simpson
Kerri Simpson is without a doubt one of
Australia’s most versatile and accomplished
vocalists. She has made her mark in a
range of genres, but to many her star really
shines when she is singing blues and
gospel - this was evident with her critically
acclaimed album SUN GONNA SHINE.

Kerri is constantly drawing on life
experiences, and this album is no different -
it is a great combined successor to the
ARIA nominated Confessin’ The Blues, and
also the ambitious and critically acclaimed
Vodou Songs Of The Spirits recorded in
New Orleans & Haiti.

Among the highlights on SUN GONNA
SHINE are `We Will Fly Away’ - a song
Kerri penned with New Orleans songwriting
team Norman Caesar and Jason Neville,
and which won her 2005 Female Blues
Singer of the Year at the Australian Blues
Music Festival Awards.

Marisa Quigley (Chubby Rae & The
Elevators)
Marisa Quigley, aka Chubby Rae, is a 6′2″
redheaded soulful powerhouse who fronts
rocking blues outfit and festival regulars,
Chubby Rae & The Elevators. Marisa
captivates all with her dynamic stage
presence, hauntingly beautiful vocals and
earthy humour.

Kelly Auty
Kelly Auty is a powerhouse performer,
switching from fiery passion to a haunting
lullaby voice. Kelly sings with her Wild
Women show at festivals and major venues,
and has supported Jose Feliciano, Janis Ian
and, most recently, Manhattan Transfer.
acclaimed album SUN GONNA SHINE.
Recently Kelly released her Wild Women
CD.

Diana Wolfe
Diana Wolfe has just released her second
CD with her band The Wolfe Gang, What’s
Cooking, recorded live at St Andrews Hotel
by acclaimed sound engineer Rob
Harwood, and featuring guest performances
by blues and roots greats including Mick
‘The Rev’ O’Connor, Broderick Smith,
Jimmie Sloggett and Steve Williams.

Diana’s singing is grounded in gospel,
having performed in the US with a choir led
by Australian gospel singer/ director, Tony
Backhouse, at WOMADELAIDE in 1999
with Glenn Tanner’s Gospel Nation, and
most recently at the 2005 Queenscliff
Festival with Melbourne Singers of Gospel.

Folk & Blues @ Wollongong

Filed under: gospel music, blues music, folk music, General — site admin @ 8:45 am

Come along to this concert just to sit in the plush seats- there’s only 110 of them and you can pretend you are sitting in the Theatre Royal because that’s just where they came from. And it’s still only $8 and $12. The last time anyone paid that to sit in these seats was 1912.

SATURDAY AUGUST 20th 7.30 pm At our new venue;

THEATRE 313 Miller Street Coniston. (opposite the school)

This will be our first concert at the 313 theatre and what a way to kick it off. The Roaring Forties will be down to present John Warners magnificent song and verse cycle

Yarri of Wiradjuri

In June 1852, a massive flood demolished the original township of Gundagai which was then built on the Murrumbidgee floodplain. Eighty-nine people are known to have lost their lives. The Wiradjuri people - with their knowledge of the land in all its moods - saved the lives of many Europeans. This story tells of one such hero, Yarri, who was one of the first on the river, in the deadliest conditions at the height of the flood, in only a bark canoe. Yarri’s is one of the most dramatic stories of Aboriginal-European interaction and certainly one of very few from an English perspective in which the Aboriginal people are clearly shown in a heroic light.

While the story is well known in the Gundagai region, it not as widely known as it deserves. John Warner heard of the flood and Yarri’s heroism in 1997 and began writing the series of poems and songs that make up the cycle using the English traditional folk styles he knows best. John collaborated with singing partner, Margaret Walters, in writing the piece. During the process, they consulted with many Indigenous people, particularly the Elders from Brungle where Yarri came from. Many of the characters in the musical are based on historical sources; others - the Mother and the Daughter - are river spirits from the author’s imagination.

The song and verse cycle “Yarri of Wiradjuri” acknowledges Indigenous ownership of the land.and recognises several aspects of European culpability in their dispossession. Most importantly, it celebrates the Aboriginal people as heroes, and contributes to our shared history,

When it was shown at Gundagai on the 150th anniversary of the flood in 2002 it was warmly received by the people in the region by people who saw it as a positive vehicle for reconciliation - including Senior Wiradjuri Elder Flo Grant and Pastor Cec Grant, Wongamar OAM.

The author - John Warner - is highly respected among his peers for his well-crafted original songs, and he has a special talent for interpreting aspects of Australian history and environment through song. He works in a duo with Margaret Walters and they have produced several albums together. Plans are under way to make a recording of the work later in 2005 or 6..

Yarri has received rave reviews wherever it has been performed particularly in Gundagai. The Roaring Forties are a Sydney based group of singers and musicians led by Margaret Walters. They perform at major festivals, Folk Clubs and events and other musical outlets. Don’t miss this one.

Then there’s Pete Bennett and Steve James with their Blues Roots and Gospel Revue

Pete and Steve have a good understanding and appreciation for early blues and Gospel covering Blind Blake and the The Rev Gary Davis.

Petes impeccable fingerpicked guitar and Steves tasteful Licks on dobro create a unique blend of music. They have been playing mainly in the blues scene in and around Wollongong for the past 20 years, Pete with Texas Radio and Steve with The Correydors and Blue Roots.

They both have experience at international festival level, with Pete having played in UK and South Africa as well.

The music crosses the boundaries of folk blues and jazz nicely enough to be not to intrusive into any one genre. A unique sound, not to be missed.

Unfortunately Tessitura couldn’t make our July Concert but you are not going to miss out because we’ve just transferred them to August.

You can read all about it again.

Tessitura consists of Claire Cave and Glen Bowker. Claire is a well known guitar/vocalist on the Sydney and South Coast solo circuit. She has a professionalism and style that ensures that she is in big demand and is booked well in advance. Her music has taken her from Perth to the Great Sandy Desert, from the Alice to Townsville and even to Bali, where her band, Pinchgut performed at the Bali Hyatt. Claire was also a founding member of the acclaimed Original Eureka Bush Band. She has performed at the Sydney Entertainment Centre with international act Peter, Paul and Mary, and for the Australian Prime Minister. She woos her audiences with her fine vocals and song-writing abilities everywhere she goes

Glen Bowker started playing guitar at the age of 14, being a fan of all kinds of popular music including folk and blues. He joined his first serious band two years later and by the time he was 18, was performing professionally. For many years he played the Sydney Bistros including residencies at Whiskey A-Go-Go, Chequers and The Stage Door Tavern. He played on P&O Cruises and toured extensively through the South Pacific regions including New Zealand and New Caledonia. Glen supported many of the big artists of the day including John Farnham, Russell Morris and John English. Over the past few years. Glen has performed venues in the Illawarra and Sydney areas with pub rock band The Howlers.

Tessitura offers Claire and Glen a vehicle to get back to their acoustic roots. They perform a variety of folk, middle of the road and a smattering of country. They consider Tessitura to be an opportunity to play music just for the love it, in the venues they like.
