musical theatre and cabaret @ the Fringe Festival

Filed under: cabaret, performance art, Comedy, Theatre, General — site admin @ 6:59 pm

The Store Room
Presents
I GET THE MUSIC IN YOU

One highlight of this years Fringe is sure to be the spectacular comedienne, musical theatre and cabaret performer Queenie van de Zandt in “I Get the Music in You”.

“I Get the Music in You” recently had its world premier in Sydney and was so well received by audiences and critics alike that it was immediately picked up by the Ensemble Theatre who held back their launch so they could include the show in their 2006 subscription season! Melbourne audiences will be able to see this hilarious 60-minute all-in-one comedy show, wickedly funny send-up and music lesson when it commences at 8:45pm on Wednesday September 21 at The Storeroom.

In the Scout Hall, right after Senior Judo, close your eyes, open your mind and prepare to ‘get the music in you’ with this intensive one-night “workshop” taught by New Age music therapist Jan van de Stool. Have your shakra cleansed, touch your sacred spot and discover how interpretative dancing can help you. Switching between characters at lightning speed, big-voiced comedienne van de Zandt also sings as the music therapist’s unfortunate students in a performance that hits the high notes of comedy.

Jan van de Stool, the Dutch despot of the evening class, is the outrageous and hilarious creation of writer-performer Queenie van de Zandt and Tony Taylor. Accompanying Jan is her trusty pianist and tea-lady Helen, played by pianist David Young. Queenie was recently seen in Channel 7’s comedy, “Let Loose Live”, and is a Helpmann Award nominee and currently nominated for a Green Room Award for her role as Vicki Nichols in last years critically acclaimed “The Full Monty”. Like Jan – Queenie also hails from Holland – and its a little known fact that as a teenager, she had one of her first forays into performing as part of a Dutch Marching Girl Troupe!

“…you shouldn’t miss it … has her audiences rolling in the aisles…Jan van de Stool is surely destined to become one of our great comic creations…Watching her develop and grow…is amazing. It must have been a bit like that when Mrs Edna Everage first picked up her handbag…” Diana Simmonds - Sunday Telegraph

“…effortless character changes… constant stream of laughs …Van de Zandt is both a fine actress and a powerful singer.” John Shand - The Sydney Morning Herald

“Seasoned performer Queenie van de Zandt effortlessly milked the crowd for laughs. The guy behind me was snorting helplessly trying to keep up as she dropped into one character after another…” Mark Bretherton - The Courier Mail

Queenie van de Zandt is also a songwriter and writer. In 1994 Glen St Theatre in Sydney produced Jingle Belrose (later re-titled Up The Shops), which she co-wrote with Tony Taylor, Craig Ilott and Jonothan Mayer, and in 2001 the show was again produced by ATYP in Sydney. In 1996 she recorded and released her first solo album, Amazon Woman, which she co-wrote with Andrew Worboys. In 1999 she performed her original material at the National Folk Festival. Most recently she was a leading cast member, performing and writing alongside comedy legends, Marg Downey, Michael Veitch, Peter Moon, Dave O’Neil and Colin Lane on the Channel 7 Sketch Comedy Show – Let Loose Live. She is currently set to perform Amazon Woman and Other Stories at The Butterfly Club, Melbourne, and is touring her one-woman show based around her character Jan van de Stool - I Get The Music in You, which she co-wrote with Tony Taylor and in her spare time is co-writing a mockumentary with Tony and comediennes Geoff Paine and Julia Zimero.

Choice @ Melbourne Fringe Festival

Filed under: performance art, Festivals & Major Events, General — site admin @ 6:03 pm

Choice is a captivating one-woman multi-disciplinary show. Skillfully combining dance, circus, film, multimedia and soundscape, the result is an insightfully witty exploration of the lives of four inner city living females.

The show has an undeniable pace highlighted with delicious moments of technical and theatrical surprise. A refreshing show for modern audiences: - relatable, poignant and uniquely timed to tell hilarious tales of inner city life.

Amanda-Lyn’s decision to create Choice was inspired by observations of Brisbane’s Cosmopolitan scene: …”In the last 5 years Brisbane and its people have strived to become more sophisticated in appearance and behavior. This became the impetus for Choice - a social commentary on the self-imposed complications emerging in our new ‘streamlined’ lifestyles….”

Commenting on her role as a contemporary theatre maker, Amanda-Lyn says: “Choice came from a desire to create theatre that is relatable and relevant to Australian audiences. Most importantly I wanted to create a piece of theatre that was entertaining and easy to watch - fun, simple, a little raw and very honest.”

If you’re in for a laugh and a ponder, and you want to walk away feeling a little more at ease with the world, then Choice is the show 2 C.

“Pearson’s first solo show CHOICE, was one that saw a standing ovation and sold out shows at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art. It was the best piece of theatre that I have seen in some time. This performer has a lot to give and I am certain we will be seeing a lot more of this woman in years to come.” - Mandy Beaumont, Qld Poetry Centre

“CHOICE was outstanding…Amanda-Lyn was outstanding. Choice portrays so many different elements of individual characters in a way that each and every audience member can identify with. It is enlightening, courageous, inspiring and meaningful. Amanda-Lyn doesn’t just provide entertainment in her performance, she delivers what the modern industry and audience craves for…” - Sarah Witt, Qld Rail

Choice had its first season at the Judith Wright Center of Contemporary Arts in October 2004 playing to a 90% capacity audience over 3 nights. The show was extremely well received by both seasoned and non-seasoned theatergoers.

Amanda-Lyn has worked as a freelance performer of circus and dance, in both commercial and arts sectors. Projects have included working with: Rock and Roll Circus: ‘Straight Up’ and ‘Love Stunts’; Vulcana Women’s Circus ‘Aviatrix’ and launch of ‘Brisbane Fringe Festival’; and Perth based Skadada: ‘Crush’ & Alchemy 2005.

Amanda-Lyn has performed extensively as a roving performer in both corporate & cultural events across Australia & Asia including: Adelaide Fringe Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland Museum, Gallery Exhibition Openings, & Brisbane Outa Fringe Festivals.

As a freelance choreographer and dancer Amanda Lyn has featured in 3 Australian music video clips, at the Optus Playhouse, Brisbane Fashion Week, the Queen Street Mall and was the choreographer for Women In Voice 13. Amanda Lyn works with singers, dancers, circus performers, body builders, prams and wheelchairs - anything that can move can be choreographed.

Domenico de Clario - Full moon piano performance

Filed under: performance art, Gigs, General — site admin @ 7:35 pm

Renowned installation artist Domenico de Clario will present an improvised blindfolded piano performance from sunset (6.13 pm) September 17 until sunrise (6.17 am) September 18, at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA).

Part of his milestone exhibition A Second Simplicity, the time-based performance will acknowledge the September full-moon.

De Clario is well known for his marathon piano sessions, often performed during a full moon. In 1995 he performed Seven-ness, a series of seven piano performances performed on the evening of each of the seven full moons between April and October at Heide. This year he has performed a series of blindfolded piano performances to co-incide with the full moon in Perth.

A Second Simplicity is a sculptural representation of the apartment building that housed Domenico’s entire family prior to their migration to Australia from Italy in 1956. The exhibition features a full scale representation of the one bedroom apartment that was inhabited by de Clario, his parents, grandparents and his sister. The apartment is lit by the seven spectrum colours, casting skeletal-like shadows from the building structure that surrounds it.

Domenico de Clario is one of Australia’s most influential installation, site-specific and performance-based artists and his work has been deeply influenced by his family, his Italian upbringing and the migrant experience. He has exhibited widely and made performances in Australia and overseas; his Shaker Road performance was shown in Maine, U.S.A. in 1996 and at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, U.S.A., in 1998; tongleN (13 conversazioni with les estrellas) at the Liverpool Biennale of Contemporary Art, 1999; and he was included in the exhibition La Quietudine de Terra at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Salvador, Brazil, 2000. In Australia his work is held in a number of major national collections and he has exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Monash University Museum of Art, the Art Gallery of N.S.W., and others.

A Second Simplicity constitutes a highpoint in the artists’ career, bringing together many of the principles and ideas that have shaped his immense and highly engaging practice over the past forty years. The exhibition is a summation of previous projects, focusing on family, narrative, dislocation and memory.

Domenico de Clario – A Second Simplicity. August 5 – September 25.
Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, 111 Sturt Street, Southbank.

Art Murder: Pictures of Dorian Gray @ Melbourne Fringe

Filed under: performance art, Theatre, Festivals & Major Events, General — site admin @ 5:10 pm

PERFORMANCE MELBOURNE FRINGE

Dancing With Strangers Presents

Art Murder: Pictures of Dorian Gray

Is sin a thing which writes itself across a man’s face?

Art Murder: Pictures of Dorian Gray is a new play adapted from Oscar
Wilde’s decadent novella by emerging Melbourne playwright Miranda Rose.
With a live band, bar, interactive art installations, a video portrait,
and much excess, pomp and foppery, one night with Dorian will sate your
every theatrical desire. Dorian Gray, a young Adonis with an innocent
visage, a disarming smile and a shocking secret. Upstairs in his attic,
behind locked doors and dust covered curtains there is a portrait, a
painting of a face without a heart – a vile, degenerate old man. You could
count his sins by the wrinkles on his forehead. Horrifying, alluring. Do
you dare to look upon the face of the Devil? Draw back the curtain – the
only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

‘Art Murder’ will be presented in conjunction with Fill Your Head – the
art buffet that has become a Dancing With Strangers tradition. Over the
past nine months, Fill Your Head has been giving local artists of any
persuasion a stage from which to show people their craft. From dance to
drama, live music to radio play, comedy to body painting, poetry and
beyond, our special event 9x Fill Your Head season will surely have
something for everyone this Fringe.

Venue: upstairs at Mayfields, 103 Smith St, Fitzroy
Dates: 22 September – 8 October (Thursday - Saturday)
Tickets: $16.00/$10.00
Times: 9:30pm (finish time 11:00pm)
Bookings: www.melbournefringe.com.au or 8412 8777

Domenico de Clario’s one-pot lunch at ACCA

Filed under: performance art, Exhibitions, General — site admin @ 9:12 am

A selection of prominent people from Melbourne’s Italian, arts and media communities will this month share a traditional Italian meal with Domenico de Clario and his family in ACCA’s main exhibition hall, as part of
de Clario’s milestone exhibition, A Second Simplicity.

Author Helen Garner, Palace cinema founder Antonio Zeccola, composer Jonathan Mills, artists Aleks Danko and Stelarc and chef and restauranteur Stefano de Pieri are amongst de Clario’s chosen lunch guests, who will be treated to traditional Italian one-pot dishes like those prepared on the landing and eaten by the artists’ family in their one-room apartment in Trieste, Italy.

For the first two weeks of the exhibition, meals will be cooked and served up within the exhibition space, alongside engaging discussions about origins, journeys, youth and ageing, Trieste and Melbourne, and remembered and recorded history. Whilst visitors are unable to enter the apartment during the lunch, they can hear then ensuing conversation throughout the gallery space. They are also invited to enter the apartment, speak to the artist, and perhaps even have a coffee after the lunch has concluded.

A Second Simplity is a sculptural representation of the apartment building that housed de Clario’s entire family prior to their migration to Australia from Italy in 1956.
Opening on August 5th in ACCA’s main exhibition hall, the exhibition features a scale representation of the one bedroom apartment that was inhabited by the artist, his parents, grandparents and his sister. The apartment will be lit by the seven spectrum colours, casting skeletal, jewel-like shadows from the building structure that surrounds it.

The apartment, via de Bosco, no. 3, Trieste, was adjacent to a cinema. Yet all the
11 year old de Clario and his sister could see from their window was the bottom half of the cinema screen. In A Second Simplicity, a cinema projection will be screened from the apartment window, and the lower-half of popular films from the period will be shown, dubbed in Italian.

In Australia his work is held in a number of major national collections and he has exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Monash University Museum of Art and the Art Gallery of N.S.W., and others.

A Second Simplicity will be a highpoint in the artists’ career, bringing together many of the forces and ideas that have shaped his immense and highly engaging practice over the past forty years. The exhibition will be a culmination of previous works focussing on family, narrative, dislocation and memory.
