Creative Guitar by Craig Dawson
This workshop examines some “less known” techniques of the acoustic guitar
including open tunings, capos, slides and tricks and tips. It is designed for
participants with an intermediate level of guitar skills, though it could also
benefit beginners to some degree.Specifically, the “around” 2 hour workshop will
cover the following topics:
1. Using the capo effectively - some tricks and chord shapes which give an open
tuning sound. This looks at using more than one capo at a time and partial
capoing.
2. Open tunings:
- Dropped D
- Open D,
- Open D minor
- Open G
- Open A
We will look at chords and structures for these tunings and also using slides.
3. Alternate tunings:
- definition and some examples including Bob Dylan’s “Buckets of Rain” and also
briefly some songs by Nick Drake.
4. Ki Ho’alu (Hawaiian slack key) techniques.
An introduction to this style using two of the main slack key tunings.
5. Open question and answer session.
The course will include handouts outlining the main sections covered.
