Darebin Music Feast 2006
Darebin Music Feast 2006 is a month of musical activities in Melbourne’s North from August 26 to September 24. It is the tenth anniversary of the festival primarily dedicated to supporting local talent and providing platforms for community music.
Darebin Music Feast includes 180 events in 25 venues. Most events are low cost and many are free.
Megan Lancaster, Co-ordinator, Festivals and Events, City of Darebin says Darebin Music Feast provides multiple platforms for community artists to perform alongside professional musicians:
“Darebin Music Feast not only celebrates the wealth of talented musicians in Darebin, it also encourages new songwriters and groups to emerge via providing opportunities to perform throughout Darebin. It¹s one of the primary festivals in Australia that nurtures local songwriters.”
We are especially proud to announce our judges for the Songwriters Awards finals on September 24 will be Steve Kilbey, songwriter and bassist of The Church, and Mick Thomas, songwriter and guitarist formerly of Weddings Parties Anything. Both are esteemed songwriters and great role models.”
Festival highlights include:
- Tenth Birthday celebration (8pm Saturday Aug 26)
- Ganesh Festival Lord Ganesh, elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom and prosperity is taken in procession to Bundoora Park and immersed
- Songwriters Awards. (Finals: Sept 24; entries close: Aug 25)
- Welcome all to Darebin Music Feast. Darebin¹s multicultural community celebrates (Aug 27)
- The Feast Club (Sept 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23)
- Blak Cab. An evening of indigenous comedy, dance and music at Wesley (September 16)
- Contemporary Vibes of Islam. Featuring Muslim rap with positive messages performed by Brothahood (September 10)
- The Tank. Written by Steve Thomas with Music by Mick Thomas. (September 14,15 &16)
- Songs of the North. David Bridie and other singersongwriters come together to celebrate and showcase the songwriting talent that resides in our local community. (September 15 )
- High Vibes Day. Six women from the Northern Territory Community of Walpri will perform traditional song and dance. (September 24)
City of Darebin (Northcote, Preston, Bundoora, Fairfield, Reservoir, Kinsbury) is one of Melbourne’s strongest musical communities. The festival began in 1996 as a two-day festival in Northcote Town Hall and grew into a month-long one by in 2005. Most musicians are linked to Darebin giving recognition to its vibrant local music culture. These include schoolchildren, jazz and folk artists, professional and emerging singer-songwriters, and classical musicians. Most activities are accessible to all as City of Darebin especially promotes venues and events accessible to people with disabilities.
