GIG GUIDE

CLAYMORE (two sets) with Bhantre

Fri 29 May 2009

Doors 8.30

Forget everything you ever thought you knew about Celtic rock bands, because Melbourne-based outfit, Claymore, defy all expectations. This enigmatic band of multi-instrumentalists not only manages to combine traditional elements of Celtic music, but they take that passion and soul and rock it right into the 21st century. They write beautiful original Celtic compositions, and even lend their style to some power rock classics, all with an Irish and Scottish twist. This will be Claymore’s final Melbourne show before they head off on their latest tour overseas to Europe.

LABJACD (Words Out Tour) with Papa Chango and Saca la Mois DJ

Fri 5 June 2009

Doors 8.30

PBS presents LABJACD, a monster 9 piece band that’s been working Australia’s dance floors and festivals since 2005. Known for their powerful sound and a guns blazin’ live set they have won loyal fans and respect wherever they’ve performed. LABJACD are now touring their second studio album “Words Out”. Whilst thematically darker and more overtly political than their earlier material, this album will still bump your speakers like a lowrider on nitrous. For this show only they will be inviting some special guests to perform as a 13 piece, recreating some of the big sounds heard on “Words Out”.

HEIRS (album launch) with The Night Terrors, Agonhymn and Bronze Chariot (S.A.)

Sat 6 June 2009

Doors 8.30

Heirs crawl from a dark place. The tenebrosity of the Old Testament. The murkiness of addiction. A movement of oppressive instrumental power, cyclic ritualism and bleak hallucinogenic revelation. Drawing from Michael Gira and his Swans legacy and the sledgehammer riffs and industrial pummel of Godflesh, Heirs’ incense shrouded low-end incantations and reverb-soaked noise strip bare the needless excesses of post-rock and heavy metal in favour of something much more concise and affecting. A lurching, drugged-out spectre - holding solace in one hand, and vengeance in the other.

Bar McKinnon, former sax player from San Francisco’s seminal Mr. Bungle, is primed and ready to bring his specific brand of cartoonish, pop inspired tunes to the world with his new Melbourne-based outfit: Umlaut. Featuring the radio single, ‘Atlas Face’, co-written and performed by former Mr. Bungle front man and music heavyweight Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas) Umlaut’s debut self-titled album is whimsical, eccentric, dark and like nothing you’ve ever heard before.

San Lazaro bring the rhythms and forms of a musical style which was born in Africa and raised in the Americas to the streets and airwaves of Melbourne, and anyone with ears and feet will immediately understand why.

VICTORIA WILLIAMS and VIC CHESNUTT (USA) with Natalie D-Napoleon & Andre Hooke (Khancoban)

Thu 9 July 2009

Doors 7.30

Finding inspiration in nature, inanimate objects and things unseen, Victoria Williams has been crafting her unusual brand of folk music in the wilds of Southern California for nigh on twenty years now. Her songs have been covered by musicians from all over, from Lou Reed to Lucinda Williams. Since releasing ‘Sings Some Ol’ Songs’ she’s been touring extensively with kindred spirit M Ward. Most people don’t see the wonder in dirt and filth, or the humour in the often cruel machinations of the world, but Vic Chesnutt does. Hailing from Athens, Georgia, he’s spent much of his career reflecting on the darker corners of life, often aided on his amazing albums by a rotating cast of musicians including members of Lambchop, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra. Since last years brilliant ‘Dark Developments’ album collaboration with fellow Athenians Elf Power and The Amorphous Strums, he’s taken to the road again touring his particular take on beauty and living.
