GIG GUIDE

THE TEALEAVES (album launch) with The Adventure Spirit and Josh McDonald (Royal Parade)

Fri 26 Feb 2010

Doors 8.30

The Tealeaves sound is inspired by the era of the great singer-songwriters, including Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel and Don McLean. Their music overflows with melody, harmony and lyrical honesty. Traversing a wide range of musical styles, their songs range from harmony filled wall-of-sound band tracks to intimate, melancholy indie-pop. In only their first year, The Tealeaves have already received industry acclaim, having been invited to appear at a number of major international Music Festivals, including Queenscliff and Port Fairy, and appear destined to become a mainstay in the Australian Music Festival community. With a style that is instantly familiar yet entirely unique, The Tealeaves have crafted a sound that you will want to revisit again and again. Their self-titled debut album will be released in February, 2010 through Vitamin Records.

HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY (QLD) with Boy & Bear (NSW), Ernest Ellis (NSW) and The Box Rockets - SELLING FAST!

Sat 27 February 2010

Doors 8.00

Serving their touring apprenticeship throughout 2009, Hungry Kids of Hungary have emerged with hardened stomachs, the ability to sleep standing and a dynamically honed live show capable of drawing new audiences purely by word of mouth. A short 12-months since triple j Unearthed invited the newbies to play a spot at the Gold Coast Big Day Out, the Hungry Kids of Hungary have since toured alongside the Philly Jays and Washington and provided national support for Bertie Blackman and Little Birdy before heading out on their very own national headline tour. The monumentally busy year was capped off with solid festival appearances at Woodford, Falls, Sunset Sounds and Southbound. With an overseas assault to the UK and USA scheduled for April, the lads are currently bunkered down in producer Matt Redlich’s poolside Brisbane studio as work begins on their debut album. And just as studio cabin fever is predicted to set in, Hungry Kids of Hungary will let loose on the road again with a string of dates around the country in late February. Along for the ride are the musical explorations of Ernest Ellis and the ethereal melodies of Boy and Bear, with a local support The Box Rockets.

ONE ONE (USA/Japan) with CAN CAN (USA/Japan) and Bum Creek

Thu 4 March 2010

Doors 8.30

Chapter Music and Room 40 present cryptic pop duo One One, featuring the fearsome and exciting collaboration of Satomi (Deerhoof) and Saya (Tenniscoats). Satomi Matsuzaki and Saya Onodera first met as university students in Tokyo in the early 90s, long before either had played in a band. A few years later, Satomi moved to San Francisco, while Saya remained in Tokyo, but the two remained good friends. Nearly fifteen years later, they bring their respectively acclaimed bands Deerhoof and Tenniscoats to Australia, and collaborate together in their own project, One One. Joining One One for The East show are Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier and Tenniscoats’ Ueno Takashi as improvised guitar and drums outfit Can Can. Plus local support from Relocated Canberra freakoids Bum Creek who have been making amazing musical weirdness since earlier this decade. They now live in Melbourne and turn every live show into a triumphant lurching mess of synth squiggles, kraut percussion and vocal gibberish. Their full length LP will be released on Chapter Music later this year.

THE VAUDEVILLE SMASH (EP launch) with special guests (Labour Day Public Holiday Eve)

Sun 7 Mar 2010

Doors 8.30

2009 saw the dawning of The Vaudeville Smash. Evolving out of the Melbourne funk scene, The Smash’s outrageous live shows soon saw them packing out venues such as the Espy and the Night Cat and garnering a legion of die hard fans. It’s a trip back to the days when ‘Earth Wind and Fire’ reigned, when ‘Parliament’ rocked and when the Sitcom theme song was a genre unto itself. When it came to recording, their objective was to capture on record what they’d been doing live week in and week out. What resulted was the same spontaneous energy that performers of old caught in their one-take recordings. With the launch of their EP followed by a national tour, 2010 will witness the rise and rise of one of the most energetic and innovative bands to come out of Melbourne for many a year.

WOODEN SHJIPS (USA) with Kim Salmon & The Surrealists and Breathing Shrine - SELLING FAST!

Wed 10 March 2010

Doors 8.00

Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia the super psychedelic sounds of San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips. Wooden Shjips (that’s not a typo) is a quartet who play rock n roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current lineup brings a more structured rock approach to its performances. Its songs sound something akin to the icy garage rock of early Echo & The Bunnymen crossed with the sun-bleached tremolo-punk of the Scientists. There are hints of krautrock, the trance-inducing organ haze of Suicide, Deerhunter style dance-drone, classic desert-fried garage psych and the mysterious, obscure Japanese lysergic-rock band Les Rallizes Denudes all mixed into one explosive whole.

BMF presents UNCLE EARL (USA) with Bluestone Junction

Thu 11 Mar 2010

Doors 8.00

Uncle Earl (or the g’Earls) is an all-star, all-female, old-time string band, with songs ranging from high-energy fiddle tunes and dance numbers to haunting, ancient ballads. The five members of Uncle Earl write and perform original songs in old-time styles, utilising mandolin, guitar, claw-hammer banjo, harmonica, old-time fiddle and bass. Named in honor of the band members’ mutual appreciation for Earl Scruggs and Steve Earle, Uncle Earl formed in 2000. Uncle Earl’s latest CD, Waterloo, Tennessee, draws its sounds from the roots of string-band music, incorporating sounds from Scotch-Irish ballads and Celtic fiddle tunes. The disc, produced by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, is one of the best old-time albums to come out in recent years.

Eilen is touring Australia for the first time with her longtime band of Jason Beek (drums, harmony vocals), Jerry Miller (electric, acoustic, and steel guitars), and Johnny Sciascia (upright bass) who wed her elegantly unflinching songwriting with a rustic, pre-Beatles swagger that encapsulates vintage R&B, Midwestern garage rock, Chicago blues, and early rock and rockabilly, while maintaining the haunting, folk-inspired purity that first made her an artist to watch. Sat 13 Mar 2010

Doors 8.30

Collard, Greens & Gravy formed in Melbourne in 1995 by Ian Collard, perform original and blues standards in the style of classic country and swamp blues much reminiscent of RL Burnside, and Blind Willie Johnson. The band, have twice represented Australia in the international blues challenge in Memphis Tennesee, their most recent appearance being in February of last year. Collard Greens & Gravy are very Brunswick, very edgy, jagged, original and authentic in equal measures. In 2008 they won the VicTas blues awards for best band and their brilliant CD Devil in the Woodpile was easily the best Australian blues release of the year.

BMF presents ANGIE HART with Kate Vigo & The Underground Orchestra

Fri 19 Mar 2010

Doors 8.30

Singer-songwriter Angie Hart rose to fame with the Melbourne-based alt- pop band ‘Frente’ which formed in 1991, selling more than a million records worldwide and changing the face of pop music and radio formatting in Australia. Since those days she’s performed in the bands Splendid and Holidays on Ice and performed her music on worldwide smash TV shows such as ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’. Angie’s sophomore solo album, the recently released ‘Eat My Shadow’, was recorded with ARIA-Award winning producer Shane Nicholson and mixed by Nash Chambers. It has received unanimous critical acclaim from every corner, with The Age decrying: “Her writing has evolved into a seamless expression of wisdom and craft” and that “Hart’s voice has never sounded so effortless”. That voice remains one of the most singular in Australia, often-imitated but never bettered.

BMF presents BARONS OF TANG with Croque Monsieur

Sat 20 Mar 2010

Doors 8.30

Spawned from the fiery pits of Melbourne’s underground theatre scene, The Barons of Tang first performed with notorious local company The Black Lung Theatre. With the taste of blood on their lips, a merciless 2 years of gigging followed taking them to varied locations from playing under a bridge to the Regent Theatre, from the Cape York to Alice to hometown Melbourne, leaving a trail of battered dance floors across the nation. Lashing Tango, Rockabilly, Latin and Gypsy with breaks, hard-hitting guitar riffs, double kick blast beats and massive horn arrangements The Barons of Tang serve up their self described gypsy ‘deathcore’. With accordion, double bass, saxophone and tuba to name just a few, the 6 piece Melbourne outfit bend mainly traditional gypsy and tango feels played in the most inappropriate and bastardised ways. The catchy tunes and punk ethos all tie together to mean one thing, dancing is inevitable!

BMF presents TRUCKSTOP HONEYMOON (USA) with Sarah Carroll & The Blue Tinsel

Sun 21 Mar 2010

Doors 7.30

Katie Euliss learned guitar, piano and bucket bass in the streets of New Orleans. She scammed enough money from tourists to buy Lucky Strikes and smoked oysters for six years. Then she met Mike West. Part entertainer, part snake oils salesman, Mike lived by pickin’ banjo and selling cds that he claimed were a curative for hangovers and small mindedness. Together they began a perpetual tour of North America, Europe and Australia. They spent their wedding night in the Tiger Truck Stop, somewhere between Lafayette and the Atchafalya Swamp. Truckstop Honeymoon was born. They play banjos and wash tubs. They sing about adultery and oil refineries. It’s break-neck breakdowns or heart-break waltzes. Like a Dodge with a burnt out clutch, their music has two speeds and no reverse.

THE WILSON PICKERS (QLD/VIC) with Georgia Fields

Thu 25 March 2010

Doors 8.00

The Wilson Pickers are an all-star interstate musical collaboration, better known as Queenslanders Danny Widdicombe, Ben Salter, Andrew Morris, and Victorians Sime Nugent and John Bedggood. The band formed after a crazy idea of uniting in the vague hope of inventing a bluegrass-style band. The Pickers creates an earthy energy by using purely organic stringed and reeded instruments. After gathering an initial repertoire of cover songs from artists such as Townes Van Zandt, Flatt and Scruggs, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Paul Kelly and Bob Dylan, The Wilson Pickers have bravely undertaken the task of writing their own material with much success. So much success that it was decided they should make a record to establish the existence of the band. A studio in Brisbane’s Samford valley was acquired, and in three short days the album was in the can featuring 11 original compositions, all recorded live in the same room, one of them (Cold River) already winning a gong in last year’s prestigious Qsong awards.

KEVIN DEVINE (USA) with special guests

Mon 29 March 2010

Doors 8.00

Kevin Devine’s ability to speak clearly through riddle filled sentences is second to none. An admitted disciple of the late Elliott Smith, Kevin Devine has mastered Smith’s penchant for disarmingly lovely melodies that mask a brooding desperation. This is nowhere more evident than on Brothers Blood. Ever the verbose wordsmith and always teeming with hostility, passion and acumen, Devine has refined his vision and is more pointed and more critical than ever before. ‘This is Devine at his most captivating, creating a mood that leaves you mesmerised.’ - Alter The Press. The singer songwriter, troubadour, philosopher and alt rock’s most likable man, Mr Kevin Devine will be playing an intimate club show at The East on the back of his performances on tour with Brand New.

RADIO STAR (EP launch) with special guests - Good Friday Public Holiday

Fri 2 April 2010

Doors 8.00
Four boys from a little country town, living in little rented houses, driving little old cars to a very big city. Spending all their money on all the wrong things.. Loitering in all the bad places, seen with all the bad faces.. and worst of all. Playing rock and roll! Their second EP, Goodbye, Goodnight, traces that journey. Produced by Greg Arnold (Things Of Stone And Wood) and Jeremy Giddings at Hothouse studios, Radio Star spent literally months working on the 5 tracks in an exhaustive effort to find the perfect sound. Taking influence from the new romantic era combined with modern day indie-pop, despite the title, Goodbye, Goodnight is definitely only the beginning.
