En Tout Cas locked themselves in a studio in December last year with Producer, Chong Lim to record their debut EP. With a strong line of shows under their belts and a brief break from the live scene they are ready to unveil the result of their toils to the public. The band pronounced On-Tu-Ka comprises Jimmy Cain, Dave Cameron, Skube Burnell and Marc Stubberfield. The EP titled ‘Dengue Fever’ features a sound that changes with every song while remaining distinctly En Tout Cas. They prove themselves to be a band which is interesting to listen to and constantly evolving musically, giving a fresh spin on the overused term, indie-rock. Opening the night will be Left Feels Right, followed by Ross de Chene Hurricanes. Dengue Fever EP will be released on the night and available through iTunes.

2009 saw the dawning of The Vaudeville Smash. Evolving out of the Melbourne funk scene, The Smash’s outrageous live shows soon saw them packing out venues such as the Espy and the Night Cat and garnering a legion of die hard fans. It’s a trip back to the days when ‘Earth Wind and Fire’ reigned, when ‘Parliament’ rocked and when the Sitcom theme song was a genre unto itself. When it came to recording, their objective was to capture on record what they’d been doing live week in and week out. What resulted was the same spontaneous energy that performers of old caught in their one-take recordings. With the launch of their EP followed by a national tour, 2010 will witness the rise and rise of one of the most energetic and innovative bands to come out of Melbourne for many a year.

Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia the super psychedelic sounds of San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips. Wooden Shjips (that’s not a typo) is a quartet who play rock n roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current lineup brings a more structured rock approach to its performances. Its songs sound something akin to the icy garage rock of early Echo & The Bunnymen crossed with the sun-bleached tremolo-punk of the Scientists. There are hints of krautrock, the trance-inducing organ haze of Suicide, Deerhunter style dance-drone, classic desert-fried garage psych and the mysterious, obscure Japanese lysergic-rock band Les Rallizes Denudes all mixed into one explosive whole.

Uncle Earl (or the g’Earls) is an all-star, all-female, old-time string band, with songs ranging from high-energy fiddle tunes and dance numbers to haunting, ancient ballads. The five members of Uncle Earl write and perform original songs in old-time styles, utilising mandolin, guitar, claw-hammer banjo, harmonica, old-time fiddle and bass. Named in honor of the band members’ mutual appreciation for Earl Scruggs and Steve Earle, Uncle Earl formed in 2000. Uncle Earl’s latest CD, Waterloo, Tennessee, draws its sounds from the roots of string-band music, incorporating sounds from Scotch-Irish ballads and Celtic fiddle tunes. The disc, produced by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, is one of the best old-time albums to come out in recent years.

Collard, Greens & Gravy formed in Melbourne in 1995 by Ian Collard, perform original and blues standards in the style of classic country and swamp blues much reminiscent of RL Burnside, and Blind Willie Johnson. The band, have twice represented Australia in the international blues challenge in Memphis Tennesee, their most recent appearance being in February of last year. Collard Greens & Gravy are very Brunswick, very edgy, jagged, original and authentic in equal measures. In 2008 they won the VicTas blues awards for best band and their brilliant CD Devil in the Woodpile was easily the best Australian blues release of the year.

Darren Jones was a brilliant guitarist and vocalist who was tragically murdered in a random attack in February 2006. All proceeds from the CD, which retail for $25, will go toward a trust fund for Darren’s son Jett who is now 5, and entry is by a minimum $5 donation which will also go toward the trust fund.

Singer-songwriter Angie Hart rose to fame with the Melbourne-based alt- pop band ‘Frente’ which formed in 1991, selling more than a million records worldwide and changing the face of pop music and radio formatting in Australia. Since those days she’s performed in the bands Splendid and Holidays on Ice and performed her music on worldwide smash TV shows such as ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’. Angie’s sophomore solo album, the recently released ‘Eat My Shadow’, was recorded with ARIA-Award winning producer Shane Nicholson and mixed by Nash Chambers. It has received unanimous critical acclaim from every corner, with The Age decrying: “Her writing has evolved into a seamless expression of wisdom and craft” and that “Hart’s voice has never sounded so effortless”. Spawned from the fiery pits of Melbourne’s underground theatre scene, The Barons of Tang first performed with notorious local company The Black Lung Theatre. With the taste of blood on their lips, a merciless 2 years of gigging followed taking them to varied locations from playing under a bridge to the Regent Theatre, from the Cape York to Alice to hometown Melbourne, leaving a trail of battered dance floors across the nation. Lashing Tango, Rockabilly, Latin and Gypsy with breaks, hard-hitting guitar riffs, double kick blast beats and massive horn arrangements The Barons of Tang serve up their self described gypsy ‘deathcore’. With accordion, double bass, saxophone and tuba to name just a few, the 6 piece Melbourne outfit bend mainly traditional gypsy and tango feels played in the most inappropriate and bastardised ways. Katie Euliss learned guitar, piano and bucket bass in the streets of New Orleans. She scammed enough money from tourists to buy Lucky Strikes and smoked oysters for six years. Then she met Mike West. Part entertainer, part snake oils salesman, Mike lived by pickin’ banjo and selling cds that he claimed were a curative for hangovers and small mindedness. Together they began a perpetual tour of North America, Europe and Australia. They spent their wedding night in the Tiger Truck Stop, somewhere between Lafayette and the Atchafalya Swamp. Truckstop Honeymoon was born. They play banjos and wash tubs. They sing about adultery and oil refineries. It’s break-neck breakdowns or heart-break waltzes. Like a Dodge with a burnt out clutch, their music has two speeds and no reverse.

The Wilson Pickers are an all-star interstate musical collaboration, better known as Queenslanders Danny Widdicombe, Ben Salter, Andrew Morris, and Victorians Sime Nugent and John Bedggood. The band formed after a crazy idea of uniting in the vague hope of inventing a bluegrass-style band. The Pickers creates an earthy energy by using purely organic stringed and reeded instruments. After gathering an initial repertoire of cover songs from artists such as Townes Van Zandt, Flatt and Scruggs, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Paul Kelly and Bob Dylan, The Wilson Pickers have bravely undertaken the task of writing their own material with much success. So much success that it was decided they should make a record to establish the existence of the band. A studio in Brisbane’s Samford valley was acquired, and in three short days the album was in the can featuring 11 original compositions, all recorded live in the same room, one of them (Cold River) already winning a gong in last year’s prestigious Qsong awards.

Patty Larkin grew up in a music and arts oriented family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Detroit art punk rock queen Niagara will team with iconic rock and roll soldiers the Hitmen for The St Valentine’s Day Massacre Tour, promoting the CD of the same name. Niagara made a name as the femme fatale of Detroit band Destroy All Monsters, whose ranks included late Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton. Destroy All Monsters released a string of singles and toured the US and England extensively in the late 1970s and early 80s, keeping alive the legacy of the Stooges. Her next band was Dark Carnival, a travelling carnival of high-energy underground artists. Membership included Niagara and Ron Asheton, as well as members of Stooges and Dead Boys. Since the 90s, Niagara has concentrated on her exploding career as a pop art painter, exhibiting to vast acclaim around the world. The tour will coincide with exhibitions at the Outre galleries in Melbourne and Sydney. Fans can expect a two-hour show comprising a Hitmen set followed by a high-energy bracket from Niagara, reprising songs from Destroy All Monsters, Dark Carnival and the Stooges. Anything could happen - and will. The ‘St Valentine’s Day Massacre’ live album by Niagara & The Hitmen is out now on Savage Beat/Shock.

Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia, the slow and hazy psychedelic jams of New Mexico’s Brightblack Morning Light. Their dreamy, blissed out desert tones will be the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer. The band was founded by the gentle naturalist ND Shineywater, hailing from Alabama, birthplace of icons such as Sun Ra & Diana Ross. Shineywater since has moved to live a minimal life off the coal/nuclear grid in New Mexico, by using only four solar panels in his small adobe dwelling. For this tour Brightblack Morning Light will consist of Shineywater with two accompanists: Danielle Stech-Homsy (keyboards/vocals) who has released two fine solo albums under the name Rio en Medio, and Chanupa, a Native American artist percussionist who lives in the mountains nearby Shineywater’s home. Plus, opening act by personal request of Brightblack Morning Light is iconic Melbourne sound artist, Oren Ambarchi.

One of Australia’s must see live acts ‘The Distance’ are making their return to the East Brunswick Club to launch their brand new live EP ‘Big towns to Outback sounds’. Recorded totally live, the guys decided to throw down some of the classic tunes that brought them to the style of music they play today. After releasing two studio albums, a plethora of singles and film clips and even a collaboration with Aussie rock legend James Reyne, the guys thought a live EP would be the perfect interlude before taking on a third studio album. Considered one of the most invigorating and fresh acts on today’s Oz country rock scene, catch the guys at a rare inner city show.

Jason Isbell, formerly a member of the Drive-By Truckers, is finally coming to Australia on the back of his second solo release ‘Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit’. The album was co-produced by Isbell and his new band The 400 Unit with Matt Pence and recorded at the renowned Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Isbell, follows in the tradition of American songwriters who have recorded in North Alabama; Arthur Alexander, Eddie Hinton and Spooner Oldham, Isbell mixes a soulful vocal style with songs that are passionate and unrepentant in their sense of place and direct in their stubborn Southerness.
