Fri 4 June 2010

Parades are a young art rock band from Sydney who wisely choose to create their own music with no outside input or interference. Featuring Dan Cunningham, Tim Jenkins, Michael Scarpin and Jonathan Boulet - Parades’ debut album ‘Foreign Tapes’ is expansive and ambitious; a haze of pop harmonies, post rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Drum media aptly described the band, who create their “homely tunes in a Garage in Sydney’s Northwest”, as having “an ethereal, expansive sound that is sweet and understated”. The band have already played Homebake and Field Day, toured the east coast with Gomez and attracted attention at radio with their earlier single Dead Nationale. KESHIE (EP launch) with special guest
Thu 10 June 2010
Doors 8.00
Reminiscent of the streets of Ghana, West Africa, Keshie is a unique combination of songwriters from Melbourne who are giving Afro grooves their own little Aussie twist. Meeting unknowingly in 2007, three of Keshie’s members were thrown together to perform a Zimbabwean inspired pop song by founding member Alena Schneider. After this performance, the spark was ignited, the idea for the band emerged, and it was back to the work shed. Throughout 2008, Keshie worked on defining their musical style; to stay clear of the orchestrated singer/songwriter feel and focus on writing in the style of festival music, with the same vibe that both percussionists in the band experienced whilst studying traditional drumming in West Africa. Since then Keshie have been blessed to be able to play venues such as The Queen Victoria Markets, Bar Open, Veludo, The Horn, Central Club Hotel, Yackandandah Folk Festival, Foodbowl Music Festival, Renaissance Festival, SheppARTon Festival, World Vegan Day at The Abbotsford Convent, and of course at the East Brunswick Club. All in all, no matter where they go the band always have one goal; to bring positive, high vibe music back into peoples lives and get them shaking what their Mamma gave them!

‘Greens Benefit’ featuring MISTA SAVONA, ELF TRANZPORTER’S LO2’s FLeet and host MC EZB
Thu 17 June 2010
Doors 7.30
With both State and Federal polls on the horizon, this year is a big one for the Greens, who stand a great chance of winning marginal seats in Brunswick, Richmond, Fitzroy and Northcote. With the whole live music and violence issue still very much up in the air, the only way to sort this and many other problems is to get more Greens into parliament. They’re up against the big cash of big business, but with this benefit gig we can give a big boost to the local campaign for sanity in the houses of parliament, and for a fair dinkum fair go for local live music. So come along and fling the Greens a lobster to help them on their way. LO2’s FLeet, Mista Savone and EZB say jahbless. Be there in time for the welcome to country at 8pm and come do your bit for the upcoming elections; oh, and remember to dance your ass off while you’re at it!

HERE WE GO MAGIC (USA) with special guests
Fri 18 June 2010
Doors 8.30
Here We Go Magic’s inception in early 2009 brought together a group from seemingly disparate musical backgrounds. Formed by a series of chance encounters, overheard conversations and supernatural occurrences, the members of Here We Go Magic found immediate common inspiration in a collection of unique 4-track recordings created by pop-folk singer/multi-instrumentalist Luke Temple. Combining with Temple’s distinctively intimate vocals, Kristina Lieberson, Michael Bloch, Jennifer Turner, and Peter Hale form an enchanting beast that intertwines harmonies in a manner that is at once intuitive and highly developed.Since this initial spark the band’s creative momentum has been unwavering and after spending much of 2009 on successive North American and European tours with bands such Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear, and The Walkmen they return with a new album ‘Pigeons’. With an impending international tour alongside New Pornographers and White Rabbits, and appearances at Glastonbury, Boonaroo and Pitchfork Music Festivals, Here We Go Magic will play just two shows in Australia. Don’t miss your chance to see Here We Go Magic’s debut Australian tour and be one of the first in the world to see ‘Pigeons’ live.

THE SOFT PACK (USA) with special guests
Thu 8 July 2010
Doors 8.00
Civil Society are proud to announce the debut Australian tour of The Soft Pack. On the back of their self-titled debut album released March of this year (Pod/Inertia), and having conquered CMJ and SXSW festivals and toured with the likes of Phoenix, The Breeders, Wavves and Franz Ferdinand, California’s The Soft Pack are finally set to bring their signature no-frills blitz-kreig style of punk-infused pop to Australia. The Soft Pack - formerly known as ‘The Muslims’ - began as a collaboration of two friends, Matt Lamkin and Matty McLoughlin, and honed their sound with a spare yet fiery mix of guitars, drums and bass, with Matt’s pokerfaced singing style. Just in time for CMJ 2008, the pair recruited Dave Lantzman (bass) and Brian Hill (drums), and the new incarnation played a raucous 11 shows as part of the festival. Shedding their somewhat-controversial ‘Muslims’ moniker, that had unintentionally become a distraction; the group changed their name to The Soft Pack in December 2008. Despite the name change, the group has continued their prolific release of mp3s, sell-out vinyl singles and EPs, and viral videos, scoring appearances on Letterman in the process, amongst other things. Already garnering comparisons to the likes of The Strokes, The Velvet Underground and Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Soft Pack is rock and roll at its apex; distilled to its very essence. Civil Society is thrilled to welcome The Soft Pack to Australia for their debut tour. Don’t miss your chance to see rock and roll at its most raw, unrefined and exciting.

THE DEAD SALESMEN with Glenn Richards (Augie March) - SELLING FAST!

From a strange little acoustic duo to a four-piece with a harder edge, The Dead Salesmen emerged from the 1980s a much louder and stranger beast. A product of Ballarat’s infamous Bridge Mall Inn era, The Dead Salesmen enjoyed a decade in the sun before pulling up stumps at the start of the 21st Century. Just recently they bumped into each other at a friend’s wedding, followed it up with a Christmas show in Ballarat, and decided to re-release some of their work. And so to promote the re-release of their personal favourite ‘Jealousy’, The Dead Salesmen will reunite to play a special, one-off show in Melbourne. This special re-release of Jealousy will be available for the first time at the show, and features Salesmen favourites such as ‘The Anchor’ and ‘Hope’ (which was written about the Bridge Mall Inn) ‘Valentine’s Night’ and the title song ‘Jealousy’. That’s right, in this era of downloading, social-networking and over-the-top consumerism, the world needs (as outrageous as this sounds) the new album from three shirtless middle-aged men who still play like they are the only band on the planet. Clocking in at just over 40 minutes and 19 songs, ‘Alfalfa Males Once Summer Is Done Conform Or Die’ represents a concise and compact look at the legendary and powerful Hard-Ons. With an epic and infamous disregard for popular trends and nice haircuts, the three quasi-virtuosos have unleashed their finest album. You may have noticed a disconcerting lack of irony, humour and originality in modern punk and metal. Look no further. The Hard-Ons ‘Alfalfa Males Once Summer Is Done Conform Or Die’ will leave footprints on top of your skull, yet leave you smiling! ‘Alfalfa Males…’ is at once a face-peeling, thrash-metal, slash-and-burn punk, brilliantly catchy power-pop album. This is the apex of a rare beast: a band that for a quarter of a century laughed at the mainstream and deliberately shunned it’ a band that gloriously does what it instinctively feels; paradoxically, a band that carefully and organically crafts its musical output with the utmost respect that it deserves.

THE DRUMS (USA) with The Motifs
Mon 2 Aug 2010
Doors 8.00
Dubbed ‘New York’s official coolest new band’ by NME, The Drums have heralded a return to the simplicity of the mind-invading catchiness unique to good, solid, guitar-pop songs. ‘We love the 1950s,’ they say, ‘it was the beginning of basic pop music. They did it from scratch and pulled these amazing, timeless melodies out of thin air’. And The Drums, with their New Order-style trebly, melodic bass, Ventures-esque guitar songs about surfing, do exactly that. On stage their infectious energy manifests as near-lunacy, the band playing their chirpy, whistle, stop/start ditties with breathtaking mania. It’s no wonder that after only a year of living in NYC The Drums’ concerts became a weekly dance-party attended religiously by even the most cynical of music fans. Now it’s our turn, don’t miss The Drums for the first time on Australian shores this August!
