ROOT (ex-TISM) with KERRI SIMPSON & THE PRODIGAL SONS with special guest
Thu 20 Mar 2008 (Good Friday Public Holiday Eve)

Kerri Simpson’s single-malt voice is a Melbourne treasure. With her crack sidemen, The Prodigal Sons, her raw soulful roots sound will arrow straight to your heart. She brings an inimitable, rough-hewn authenticity to this storming double-bill. ROOT! bring something altogether else. Formed just last year around the man who (allegedly) was the voice of TISM, ROOT! look like a bunch of seasoned country rockers, but their stage show is completely and utterly riveting. Part bar-band, part stand-up, part poetry-reading, ROOT! take you off in all directions, with figurehead DC spending most of his time in the audience.

Martin Martini and The Bone Palace Orchestra have carved a unique and infamous niche as a raucous, downtrodden gypsy rock band renowned for high energy stage shows and bastard bent distinctive song writing. Described as poetic, political, eccentric and menacingly attractive, the Bone Palace Orchestra draws upon a range of musical influences and artists from Nick Cave to Cole Porter, Tom Waits to Shostakovich. Front man Martin Martini set about creating a sound that fuses musical genres whilst exploring Martini’s love of the macabre. “Think Baz Luhrmann meets Tim Burton, think The Cat Empire with manic depression.” Beat Magazine.

It’s break-neck breakdowns or heart-break waltzes. Wed 12 Mar 2008
Doors 8.30
Elana James is the just the beez kneez in Texas fiddle music; after a decade with the renowned Hot Club of Cowtown, the hottest young string band in the US, Elana found herself working in the Bob Dylan touring band and recording with Willie Nelson. She then fell effortlessly into recording her own fabulous self titled debut solo album. “Not unlike fellow Texan Norah Jones, Miss James is fiercely traditional, and yet oozes an effortless contemporary charm. Her bow work, sweet and nimble, references Western swing legend Bob Wills and jazz master Stephane Grappelli… and she can purr like Nancy Sinatra” - Washington Times.

GALACTIC (featuring Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 & Boots Riley of The Coup - USA) with special guest
Sun 23 Mar 2008
Doors 8.00
Direct from the Blues and Roots Festival, New Orleans based Galactic started out over a decade ago as an instrumental act in the tradition of the Meters, the JB’s, and Booker T. & the MG’s – bands equally comfortable recording their own material or working with vocalists. Their album ‘From the Corner to the Block’ (2007) grew out of Galactic’s experiences touring with artists like the Roots, Jurassic 5, Triple Threat DJs and Gift of Gab. Although it features cameos from a ‘wish list’ of fan-favourite MCs, this isn’t a typical hip-hop album nor hip-hop act.
