Abby Dobson released her highly anticipated debut solo album Rise Up late last year, featuring first single Shining Star. Abby is best known as the voice of Leonardo’s Bride, whose hit single Even When I’m Sleeping was voted APRA Song of the Year in 1998 and included in their Top 20 Australian Songs of all Time. Rise Up has been many hard years in the making. Two of the songs on the album, Horses and I’m Not Missing You, were produced by Abby and Robert F Cranny - Sarah Blasko’s musical partner. Abby has recently been in the studio with producer Josh Abrahams, best known for working with Amiel on their hits Addicted To Bass and Love Song. They have emerged with new single It’s Only Love, remixed and reworked by Abrahams, to be released in March.

Two of Australia’s premier emerging acts, Bluejuice and The Paper Scissors have officially announced a massive co headline national tour. It’s been nothing short of a phenomenal few months for punk hoppers Bluejuice. ‘Vitriol’, the first single from debut album ‘Problems’, was the second most played song on Triple J in 2007 and new single ‘The Reductionist’ has been on high rotation for over two months. Post-indie/soul four-piece The Paper Scissors first hit the national limelight in 2006 with their track ‘We Don’t Walk’ from their self titled ‘The Paper Scissors EP’. Their burgeoning reputation for frenetic, crowd-friendly, loud and tumultuous live shows saw them hit stages nationwide with the likes of Midnight Juggernauts, Datarock, Patrick Wolf and at festivals such as Falls, Southbound and The Great Escape.

Four outrageously diverse singer/songwriter musicians united under gourd. Indeed, playing instruments made from those woody cucubits brings their music together to make folk funk philosophy to feed your wildest pumpkin longings. Penelope Swales (guitar), Carl Pannuzzo (drums), Mal Webb (bass, mbira and bugle) and Andrew Clermont (violin, mandolin and guitar) sing songs written by themselves and a few dear friends. All the instruments are hand-made from gourds by Penelope under the guidance of home-grown, world renowned luthier, Jack Spira. Imagine Joni Mitchell and James Brown getting down in Bob Marley’s pumpkin patch in gourdy costumes. Between them, they’ve played with the Oxo Cubans, the Acapelicans, Dya Singh, Sock, Batacuda, Checkerboard Lounge, The Lawnmowers, 5 Angry Men, Heavy Earth and Lano and Woodley.

Adam Franklin spent the 1990s as singer, guitarist and main songwriter for London-based Swervedriver, the genre-breaching Creation Records rock band. Since Swervedriver went into orbit in 1999, Adam Franklin has experimented with a number of stylings on six releases under the name Toshack Highway. Franklin’s seventh post-Swervedriver solo album, ‘Bolts of Melody’ is his first under his own name. His newest work alternates between a full band sound with acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards and bubbly moogs that has been described as “spacefolk”. Sometimes, it’s a much more back-to-basics affair. Occasionally a little electronic, sometimes psychedelic, a little bit country, a little rock ‘n’ roll - take a listen when Adam Franklin returns with his solo live show.

Direct from the Blues and Roots Festival, New Orleans based Galactic started out over a decade ago as an instrumental act in the tradition of the Meters, the JB’s, and Booker T. & the MG’s – bands equally comfortable recording their own material or working with vocalists. Their album ‘From the Corner to the Block’ (2007) grew out of Galactic’s experiences touring with artists like the Roots, Jurassic 5, Triple Threat DJs and Gift of Gab. Although it features cameos from a ‘wish list’ of fan-favourite MCs, this isn’t a typical hip-hop album nor hip-hop act.
