Playing their first gig in 2004, the band proved to be strong, entertaining and had a captivating interactive dynamic on stage. The next 12 months produced ambitious songs like ‘Ain’t It Cold, Ain’t It Dark?” And ‘Fashion Statement’, diversifying their sound while maintaining a rock solid backbone. They are poised to make even greater moves in 2006. www.myspace.com/theskeletonkeys

Trough Lollies have an old School punk rock sound, very English, compounded by there English singer. They have been compared with The Spazzys, Vice Squad, Bad Religion and X-ray Specs. The band also does songs by local songwriter mates like Spencer P Jones, Billy Miller, Ian Rilen & Jed Starr.

2005 saw the band release a live C.D. recorded at The Pint on Punt. It was met with both kudos and criticism for its warts and all approach, (i.e. no over dubs) but every-one agreed the songs were strong. 2006 will see the Large Number 12’s re-enter the studio to do some more recording, plus do some touring, including gigs in Adelaide and Sydney. Greyhound Hotel Gig Guide

Filed under: pop music, Live Music Venues, rock music, Comedy, General — site admin @ 6:55 am

1 Brighton Rd St Kilda.Ph: 9534 4189
Wed 14 December
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Lelu, My Left Boot + Drake 8pm, free.
Lelu are a three-piece eclectic electric outfit out of Melbourne, with a distinct sound formed from three players waiting, watching, and dicing like a drunken chef on a late night cook-up. With influences from Bowie, Dinosaur Jr, and Kashmir, their blend of rhythm and melody will enter your nervous system, throw your mood, and wake you up to the happenings left of the brain.
Their self titled debut e.p was recorded at the foot of the Victorian Alps in Benalla, between freezing conditions, merry midnight adventures, and fearing for their life at the local (see Deliverance, Wolf Creek), the e.p shows where they’ve come from, what they do, and where they will go… www.lelu.com.au

My Left Boot are a Melbourne based band consisting of 4 male bi-ped mammals, whose music welds 60s and 70s rock and psychedelia to a frame of strong melodies and high energy. Coming together after a chance meeting at a late night kebab outlet, My Left Boot’s live act flows seamlessly from the quiet and trippy to a heavy, brain enslaving rock.

The band features the incredible chameleon like vocals of Matt Chapman with rock solid backing from the rhythm section of Scot Aird and Liam Cuffley, layered with powerful desert scorched guitar by Daniel Firth. The group have just independently released their debut EP “Season of the Time”, featuring live favourites and recorded at the legendary Hothouse in St Kilda. January will see them touring the East Coast , whilst the new year hosts huge potential for the group. www.myleftboot.com.au

Drake are a four-piece that are making their presence felt on the stage with their combination of foot stomping rockers and harmony driven ballads. Drake are: Carl Russo vocals guitar, Nic Lam guitar vocals, Michael Cini bass vocals and Katrina Di Tomasso drums vocals. Major influences include the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Faces, the Dandy Warhols and Radiohead. After six months of honing their original songs, Drake recently completed a demo with renowned reggae/roots producer and musician Nicky Bomba.

The live demo captures the diversity of the band, as they seamlessly move from the intense ‘Strawman’, to the warm ballad ‘Audrey’. It is this diversity which sets them apart from other one dimensional bands, whose songs all seem to sound similar. Drake’s catchy melodies and guitar hooks mesh perfectly with the commanding groove of the bass and drums. If you ain’t tapping your feet after one listen, you need new shoes.

Thur 15 December
Bandroom: COMEDY w Oliver Clark, Des Dowling, Dave County + Dana Katz $12/10. 8pm.

Fri 16 December
Bandroom: Jagger’s Banquet with DJ Tony Biggs (RRR). 8.30pm. $5
Jaggers Banquet have life easy - all they have to do is play the songs of the greatest rock and roll band of all time. The music of the Rolling Stones is simple, yet full of hidden depth and meaning. Their live show is minimal, but captivating. This is why so few cover bands try doing this kind of show.

Jaggers Banquet are well known Melbourne muso’s and Stones maniacs. They pride themselves on recreating the looseness and energy of a Stones event. It is not a lookalike gimic. It’s a sounds like, grooves like show full of classics. “Extremely close to the real thing, but with a big St Kilda sensibility about it” - James Hound Dog Young.

RRR DJ Tony Biggs is special guest, and will keep the classic rock and roll tracks pumping. The night has been put together as a hello to the Greyhound’s new bookers Paddy Chong and Kaos.

So this is Christmas and what have we done? We’ve got P Tex playing a fabbo Christmas show on Sat 17th, that’s what. Thrill as Al-G sings the entire “Jesus Christ Superstar” a capella! Laugh as Bern, Mick and Al-B try take on the Three Wise Men!! And weep as Maz sings “The Little Drummer Boy”!!!

Or not. Chances are it will be lots of twang & rock and feature special guests like The Harrington Brothers from the Large Number 12s, Dave Moll, Ian Rilen and Dan Brodie guesting with the boys from P Tex on some very special numbers. Perhaps a version of “I Saw P Tex Kissing Santa Last Night”, “The First Noel (Gallagher)” or even “Deck The Guy Whose Name Is Holly”.

Who knows? So come all ye faithful, come one and all to celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus and get plonkered with P Tex at the Greyhound Hotel - the hotel where everyday is Christmas!

Greyhound Hotel Gig Guide

Filed under: pop music, Live Music Venues, rock music, Comedy, General — site admin @ 8:25 am

1 Brighton Rd St Kilda.Ph: 9534 4189

Wed 23 November
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Blue Sunshine Minds, Light The Night Sky + The Callers 8pm, free.
Blue Sunshine Minds are 4 individuals who would prefer to listen to the timeless rock ‘n’ roll of the Beatles and Stones and the psychadelia of the school of Anton Newcombe than be content with the latest indie fad finally got it together in early 05. The garage noise that quickly evolved into recordable sounds caught the attention of Damian Gibson, bass-player for Melbourne rock and rollers, The Gear, after he heard some 4-track home demo’s. This resulted in a four song demo being recorded at Hothouse Studio’s in Melbourne. The Columbia demo shows the bands variety of musical influences from shoegazing britpop to the Beatles and the rock ‘n’ roll of the Stones, to the droning psychadelia of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and My Bloody Valentine but is only the tip of the cosmic iceberg that is Blue Sunshine Minds.

Light the Night Sky has just released their debut single Eating the World for Breakfast. Formally known as q, Light the Night Sky’s music is original alternative rock and roll with some electronica, a la Dandy Warhols, Death in Vegas etc.

Light the Night Sky is a duo consisting of Ben Wundersitz and Stephen Hughes. Friends from high school, the two started making music together seven and a half years ago. The last two years has seen the band take to stage. To help them perform the music live, Ben and Stephen have enlisted the support of a female vocalist and a drummer. Light the Night Sky is hungry to release their first album shortly after Eating the World for Breakfast.

After playing together in the past, Simon White (guitar/vocals) and Tony Dee (bass/vocals) recently met up and formed The Callers. Christo (drums/vocals) then completed the three piece line-up. In the 6 months that they have been together, they have started playing several live gigs in Melbourne. Some examples of The Callers influences are The Stranglers, Toy Love, Magazine, Joy Division and The Jam. They have created a unique, raw and original style.

Thur 24 November

Dave Grant, Marty Lappan, Oliver Clark + John Burgos

Dave has performed throughout Australia, New Zealand and the USA including the famed “Improv” Comedy Club in L.A. He has consistently performed in national comedy festivals, for which he has written and performed one-man shows including the acclaimed “MAN” series. In 2004 Dave Grant was awarded the prestigious TREV award for the Best Comedian.

Fri 25 November
Bandroom: Lexi’s Curfew (QLD) Animal Johnson, Ben Smith Band + Borne, 8.30pm $8

Lexi’s Curfew is a 4 piece Port Douglas/Cairns cutting edge rock band who have supported Machine Gun Fellatio, Spiderbait, 28 Days, Shihad, Regurgiator, Jebediah, Something For Kate, The Butterfly Effect and The Living End.

Best described as between INCUBUS, SEVEN DUST, AUDIOSLAVE & A PERFECT CIRCLE, these acts reflect the guys whole attitude towards there peers and audience, which is evident and stands out on there live charismic performance. They write great songs that are honest and motivational. There true love for music stands out on there overwhelming stage show, from lead singer JASON HALL’S backflips to thunderous bass by STEWIE screaming electric guitar/vocals by MARCUS and keeping it all together LUKE on drums and backup vocals.

Animal Johnson Jam sessions are an institution of share house parties and a rite of passage for budding musos. If you can’t keep the attention of a room full of your pissed mates then what hope have you got. It was at one such party in the Adelaide hills where Dave (Watkins, drums) first met Jeb (Cardwell, guitar and vocals). After finding out they both shared a passion for 70’s rock they became fast friends.

In late 2003 they decided to put their own band together. They didn’t plan to be a duo, but after being offered a support slot to Chris Wilson - the 2 of them played, and liked the sound, and Animal Johnson was formed.

Their sound has a hard edged, straight ahead rock groove to it, and the strength of their demo and live gigs saw them invited to perform at the 2004 St Kilda Festival and 2005 Australian Music Week. In May this year, they released their debut CD.

The sultry, smoky sound of Ben Smith’s whisky voice wafts through the air during Australian Music Week. The audience is listening, mesmerised and engaged in Ben’s storytelling journey. Eyes closed, the crisp chords of the guitar guide the melodic and soulful song. Welcome to the evocative musical world of Ben Smith.

He achieved the “first ever clean sweep” at the 2004 Australian Music Week (AMW), winning both the acoustic category and best song overall in the AMW Maton Song Contest plus taking out the ABC/DIG Radio Showcase Prize. Ben has since shared stages with many Australian and world-renowned acts; Chicago, Bonnie Raitt, Renee Geyer, John Cleary, Tommy Emmanuel, Pete Murray, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, Robert Cray, Thirsty Merc, The Angels…to name some.
Ben’s debut CD, a self-titled solo acoustic album, received rave reviews and will soon be followed up with an upcoming EP, to be released by ABC Music.

defrienemy ( de.FREN.uh.mee)
‘frienemy’. A friend who acts like an enemy.
A former friend masquerading as a current friend.

From mosh pits in youth infested stinky bars in the CBD to intimate settings in the Dandenongs, their music is welcomed by many. Defrienemy are setting the bar on post-modern rock, with an extremely diverse and universal sound, while firmly calling the eastern suburbs of Melbourne home. Together they’ve managed to blend influences such as Incubus, Qotsa, Nine Inch Nails, Grinspoon and Cog.

Thur 15 September
Bandroom: Boneyard, Puppetman + Lucy’s Fire $5, 8.30pm
Boneyard range from rootsy to trippy to rock, used to playing long shows in and around Byron Bay. It’s intense, intelligent, somewhat in your face music, but with a smile. A bit g-love, a bit Sabbath, quite literally that dynamic range from mellow to metal, worth a look if you don’t expect marshmallow and saccharine and like to have some fun with thunder.”

Described as “psychadelic punk rock”, the intention of Puppetman’s music is to convey a truthful message within a musical framework that spans across intense guitar rock, ambient atmospherics, engaging melodies and swirling psychadelic sounds. Right, then. Delivered in intense and energetic live shows, Puppetman combines electronic and traditional rock music to create a truly unique experience for the listener.
LUCYS FIRE were formed in 2002 by members Rohan Way,someone who’ll go down as one of historys hardest hitting drummers, and Kai Koch, an amazing guitarist who blends traditional rock/metal guitar with his own futuristic views, out of a mutual interest in such rock/metal legends as Black Sabbath, Metallica, Corrosion Of Conformity, and Kyuss.Adding the pounding bass of Paul Seccull along the way they quickly wrote numerous original tunes and practised themselves into a tight, dynamic, potent force. After finding themselves such a unique vocal element in intense frontman Damian Edwards, Lucys Fire were ready to take on the world.

“THEY THUMP OUT A GREAT MIX OF KYUSS SABBATH AIC INSPIRED ORIGINALS WITH GREAT VOCALS BY BALLS TO THE WALL SCREAMER DAMIAN EDWARDS.LOOK OUT FOR THESE GUYS IF YOU LOVE HEAVY BLUESY GRUNGEY STONED OFF YER NUTTER ROCK N’ ROLL”- FRIED CAT FANZINE

Starting with there own backyard, Lucys Fire cut there teeth at Geelongs infamous Barwon Club, instantly proving themselves to be an intense wall of molten rock fury. Quickly establishing themselves as one of Geelongs premier rock bands Lucys Fire are still continuing to floor audiences today.

In 2003 Lucys Fire went into the studio to record an e.p. Proving just as formidable on disc as they were on stage they’re self titled recording was an outstanding success and turned out to be just what they needed to take there next step in writing the Lucys Fire chapter. A steady supply of gigs has kept Lucy’s Fire’s live show razor sharp and ready for any challenge ahead of them.

Fri 16 September
Bandroom: Jager Hot Shots (Best of Jager Uprising) 8.30pm $10
Basil, Collusion, Nevereleven + Cloud City
The Jager Uprising helps new bands from around Australia get a foothold in the music business. Every week new emerging bands are showcased around the east coast of Australia. Playing the Jager Uprising has lead to bands getting major national and international supports, management offers and a much higher profile.

To celebrate this high profile music event the Jager Uprising will be presenting a special Jager Hotshots showcase at the Greyhound Hotel featuring Basil, Collusion, Nevereleven, and Cloud City. This event is more than just a gig but a showcase of Australia’s upcoming emerging bands and we will also have CD giveaways, Rock N Roll Dj’s and the usual great atmosphere.
Basil, from obscurity to ubiquitous in less than one year. Not the rag-tag shoe-staring mopers that defined indie-pop a decade ago, not even indie-pop but for the lack of a more suitable moniker, Basil are optimistic, confident, intelligent and ever so melodic. But it is not just melody for the sake of melody, but a sound intent on two things – making people move, and making people feel.

The tunes waft between optimistic guitar pop, to dirty, sexy rock. Luke’s keys vacillate between show piece and whipping boy. Rachael herself transforms from innocent girl-next door to vixen. When Jake attaches the Karate-Kid headband, pop makes way for rock, but both forms of the muse represent quality. Bill adds moments of odd and undefined, yet palpable, emotion.

Get ready for Collusion. Melbourne’s indie-pop, rock n’roll kids are here to rock your socks right off…so you will be dancing in your bare feet! Imagine the bastard love child of The Libertines, Rolling Stones, Oasis and Jebediah, creating some of the catchiest rock n’roll tunes you’ll ever hear. Mixing 60’s and 70’s rock n’ roll riffing with the catchy as ever melodies and wicked harmonies, Collusion produce some of the coolest tunes this side of Spain. If you have been needin’ a quick injection of booze, love and dancing, now is your big chance! The songs are hot, the band are hotter! Get out and see Collusion while they’re still legal!!!

Conquering new fans is what Nevereleven do best. Driving into your chest with power, passion and emotion, their infectious sound has the ability to get first time listeners nodding their heads, tapping their feet and most importantly – singing along. Over the last three years nevereleven have established a solid live reputation in a variety of venues across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Favourites amongst bookers, bands and fans alike, their hard work in the live arena has seen nevereleven’s loyal following build significantly and with every show it continues to grow.

The four members have been best mates for years, resulting in a tight musical bond that allows each of their vibrant personalities to shine through. This creative understanding combined with music to make the crowd go wild, gives nevereleven a spark and confidence that can’t help but rub off on you. Standing out from the crowd with their unique blend of rock and charm, nevereleven were tipped by Beat as one of five ‘Bands to watch in 2005’. www.nevereleven.com

For three years Cloud City has been developing a distinctive sound, instantly recognisable to the music. This strongly bonded quartet combines each individuals creative talent to weave a tapestry of strong melodies and harmonies, producing rock based grooves. The style of Sarah’s vocals and guitar playing have been likened to a female Jeff Buckley. A talented vocalist in her own right, she recently won $5000 in a Kareoke comp. Cloud City have played multiple shows in some of Melbourne’s top rock venues, and have also played a number of shows in regional Victoria. The power to capture the audience, with emotions and appeal is what Cloud City strives for. www.cloudcity.com.au

Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Spyhunter, Ambassador 77 + Dr Rocket
SPYHUNTER’s songs showcase the band’s ability to mix many styles in an effort to create one new and original sound. Combining elements of punk and rock and hard.core whilst still retaining their pop sensibilities, SPYHUNTER can appeal to many audiences.

AMBASSADOR 77 have been performing their thumping live show to audiences far and wide, since 2002. The band released their debut EP “Transaction Approved” in March 2003. The disc featured 4 punchy rock tracks and was produced by David Carr (Antiskeptic). AMBASSADOR 77 ’s sound is defined by soaring guitar riffs and a pounding rhythm section. An acoustic backbone compliments their creative yet catchy melodies.

DR. ROCKETT is a four piece consisting of three former members of Melbourne’s own funk/rock outfit That’s What She Said. Adam (vocals), Tim (drums) & Jason (bass), now combine with long time friend and noted blues guitarist Dion, who has been playing solo & in bands around Melbourne. Thur 30 June
Public Bar: The Vagrants

The Vagrants finish up their month of residency gigs tonite. Getting compared to Ben Harper, Black Crows, The Allman Brothers, Baby Animals, The Stones and Jack Johnson says a lot about how hard it is to categorize the music - but one thing’s for sure - it’s been going down a treat.

James Spitfire is the rhythm of The Vagrants. Renate Ludwig is the voice. Steve Cookie Iorio is lead guitarist and main songwriter. Gentleman Jim Rintoul on bass is the lead foot on the gas pedal. Peter G is the primal beat of The Vagrants. 9.30pm, free.

Bandroom: Brass Bed, Problem + The Kathematics

The BRASS BED began life in 1997 as a brass/bass-focussed group, brain-child of Stu Thomas (Kim Salmon & the Surrealists, Dave Graney, The Scientists, etc etc etc…) suurrounded by a floating international line-up of players.

It has been home to a string of talented performers, who pursue their own passions in Australia & elsewhere….Over time, the band has gravitated from being purely song-based to performing & recording soundtracks for underground film & art events….

The Bed have put out a few records (an EP, 2 LP’s, 3 single, 3 Picture Discs..) and have a DVD and a new LP in the pipeline, that crosses the boundary between trash and tango.
Where are we stylistically? Good question….Let’s imagine a 50’s ‘Crime Scene’ sound driven by a filthy lead bass. Add to the cocktail a jazz-punk/circus feel, double crossed with futuristic surf-gypsy-tango overtones & performed with a New Orleans funeral band mindset, and you’re getting close….

Problem sound like a cross between Celibate Rifles and The Pixies with Tom Waits on acid doing vocals. A 5 piece from Melbourne who formed in 2001 Problem released The Sweet Sound of Success in 2001, and have since featured on 2 other compilation albums.

Kathematics are back on the live scene and have been impressing audiences with their infectious pop teamed with an energetic live show. From 8.30pm, free.

Greyhound Hotel Gig Guide

Filed under: Gigs, General — site admin @ 6:57 pm

1 Brighton Rd St Kilda. Ph: 9534 4189
——————————————————————————–

Wed 20 Apr
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom:Jager Uprising w Kye Thomas & The Otherwise, Ben Mitchell, Paul Wesley 8pm free.

One Of These Days is the new 5 song EP for Melbourne singer/songwriter KYE THOMAS AND HIS BAND THE OTHERWISE. Main vocalist KYE THOMAS is a songwiter/producer/engineer who has been involved in Melbourne music industry since relocating from Adelaide in 94. Kye has also been playing solo and in various incarnations of The Otherwise periodically over the last ten years.

The live band THE OTHERWISE is a six-piece band including drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, piano & organ, and backing vocals. The players in the band are all great young players and really know how to perform. http://www.theotherwise.com/

Singer/songwriters as strong as PAUL WESLEY come along so rarely. The honesty and integrity with which he presents himself through his music, and the energy and emotion with which he performs live, demand attention. The first thing that grabs you is the strength and diversity of his voice: from his warm, breathy ballads to the strong emotive scream of his rockier pieces.

Paul’s debut recording, the EP titled oxygenate, provides a clear example of the diversity of his vocal abilities and song writing talents, from the heart-breakingly beautiful ballad ‘oxygen’ to the angst driven ‘believe’ and from the pop stylings of ‘three’ to the delicate wonder of ‘do you think’. Following its release oxygenate received good rotation on Triple J, featuring on the AusMusic show, and also had a good run on Austereo in Canberra.

With a gig resume involving performances everywhere from Melbourne to Cairns, Mildura to Mount Isa, and as far abroad as London and Paris Paul has learnt and developed his talents the only way he knows how: by getting out there in front of audiences. Looking forward, Paul’s plan is to keep working as a three-piece, find his audience, establish an identity and to test and develop new material for the next recording.
