Wed 12 July
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w September, Evolusion + Young Eleanor. Free, 8pm.

It all began for September in 1998 when Joe and Slava, former residents of the USSR, were walking down Acland Street in St Kilda drinking cask wine and singing the latest chart smash from Dr.Alban when they were confronted by a 2 meter tall, scraggly haired giant of a man who made it very clear that their choice of material was sub par. The giant man very quickly picked up on Joe and Slava’s horrendous Russian accents and introduced himself as Denis Aleksandrovich Semchenko or Denis to his close friends

Joe and Slava returned to Melbourne in 2003. Joe resumed writing and recording songs in a power pop vein. September occasionally played gigs with pick-up musicians until the recent recruitment of multi-instrumentalist and all-around nice guy Solomon to fill out bass duties. The band released a new album of original material, “Not Enough Stars in the Sky”, in March 2006. The album contains power pop, straight r’n’r, garage rock and surf instrumentals.

www.myspace.com/septembertheband

This is a band whose evolution began 5 years ago at a local pub. Two of the members were only 13 back then, yet their dynamic stage presence and exciting musicality consistently drew crowds of 150 weekly. The four piece are: 18 year old twins Markus and Julian - Drums & Bass, Demis - Guitars and Vocals and Christian - Guitars and Vocals. Evolusion have discovered a new rock style that is yet to be defined, but can be traced back to arena/epic/pop styles. In a world where people are almost told how to dress, which culture to be a part of and what to listen to…Evolusion have the sound that everyone’s been waiting for, original, powerful and real. www.myspace.com/evolusion

Young Eleanor Questions the Naked Chicken, is the name of the debut EP from the lads and lady that make up this band. It was recorded mostly in February ’06 by Chris Brady. Bound by a mutual love of curling and lapsang souchong, the members of Young Eleanor enjoy giving collective birth to the aural sensation that we call music almost as much as they enjoy referring to themselves in third person. When prompted to pigeonhole their shtick, the band will generally contort their faces in a goofy way and mumble pop/rock.

If, as the X-Files hypothesised, the truth is indeed out there, though, it would probably state that Young Eleanor’s sound lay somewhere between Holly Golightly and the Eagles; stopping at Little Barrie’s house on the way for cheese and crackers. On a more visually obvious note though, the band actually consists of three young folk - Ms Ellie Bailey on drums, while Charles Martin sings and swaps bass and guitar duties with Yuri Koskov-Koskov between songs. When available, the band is joined by friend and ex-Polyvinyl member Alex Caffrey.

Thur 13 July
Bandroom: Paddy Chong & Kaos Presents Electric Mayhem w The Hostiles, Janine Marshall Band + 4tress. $6, 8pm

Ever wonder what Paddy Chong and Kaos got for their birthdays as kids? A Bass, a Drumkit and holidays at the Von Trapp family home in Salzburg and they want to bring it all home to The Greyhound Hotel in St. Kilda. Drummers, Bass Players and even normal people lend us your Beers and we’ll show you how to keep that childish edge right through your adult years. So we’re inviting everyone we know, everyone we’ve played with and everyone we’d like to know to come and have one, listen to music, laugh, jam and get responsibly annihilated all in the name of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The Hostiles, Janine Marshall Band + 4tress will be playing through the night. Drink specials throughout the night, if you don’t go home feeling like Big Kev then come back and we’ll give it to you twice as loud !!

Fri 14 July
Bandroom: Shedguest, Tresnard + The Keepers $6 9pm.

In a rock scene where so many bands look and sound the same, in a perpetual climate of just-turn-it-up-and-bash-it-out punk, in a sea of messy, whiney garage rock, Shedguest are good for what ails ‘ya. These guys are a breath of fresh air for hard rock fans that are losing faith in things like creativity and variety. Sick of seeing the same bands taking to the stage with the same act week after week, the three boys from Shedguest decided to do something other than complain.

Swinging from heavy, punchy, ballsy hard rock riffs, to smokey, husky, bluesy melodies, to dirty, funky, skanky guitar magic, Shedguest go out of their way not to be rock stars, not to impress chicks (they couldn’t anyway), but to keep you interested. If you’re a rock fan, come and see it done a little differently. No bullshit. No make-up. No phony fuckin’ attitude.

Sat 15 July
Public Bar: Large No. 12’s + P-Tex. Free, 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

It will be a battle of epic proportions, along the lines of Napoleon and Nelson, Australia and Italy, and Torvill and Dean. The winner will take away the trophy for ‘Best Live Act At The Greyhound On Sat 15th Of July, Except For The Other Live Act That Night Who Were Pretty Darn Fine Too’. So expect it to be real tense as two of the South side of the river’s finest, P Tex and The Large No 12’s, fight the good fight and fly the flag of old style St Kilda Pub rawk before it all disappears in a sea of pubs with large windows, plasma screens and gourmet pizzas. Marvel as Horse and Al-B compare hair products! Gasp as Wes and Bern trade vocal licks, and thrill to some most excellent music. It’s free, the beer’s cold and the bands are hot. What more do you want?

Sun 16 July
Public Bar: Hey Gringo. Free, 5pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred T Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Hey Gringo is the creation of songwriter, multi instrumentalist Daryl Roberts along with Paul Gadsby formed an acoustic original and selective tongue in cheek covers duo in the mid 90s. Daryl decided to take things to another level forming a band and recording their debut album I WAS THERE in 2000 with the amazing Nicky Bomba (Bomba, Banana Oil, John Butler Trio). The album met with rave reviews and airplay across Oz and all the way to Argentina, Canada, Netherlands, Belgium & Germany.

They have now released their second album FUNKY CAR with a steady giging line-up are taking the Australian Blues/Roots music scene by storm. Hey Gringo’s groove injected, retro tinged all original repertoire pays tribute to the influences of the creative era of the 70s Oz music scene with the freshness of Now. With three songwriters and vocals all around their recordings include guest performances by some of Australia’s most influential roots music artist.

Wed 7 June

Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Valerie, 21 Summers + The Curious Few. Free, 8pm

Valerie is a cutting edge brand new Melbourne band consisting of two singers, two guitarists, a bassist and drummer, ranging from ages 18-23. Their sound is unique but very commercial. It may loosely be called a rock band, but an ‘extreme’, very modern, but beautiful rock band. The band is driven to create something new and exciting. Hailing from two successful Melbourne bands, the members have wide experience in the industry and Melbourne music scene. Although they have not yet played live together, their experience and confidence will surely prove to do them great justice. Valerie is excited to begin their new project and watch it flourish, as they are sure it will

21 summers are a hard rocking alternative band that also has a stage presence that is second to none. 21 summers offer emotionally charged grooves with sweeping melodies that soar over the top. 21 summers came about when two Melbourne based bands From December and Picture Box fused together. Both bands did the rounds of the Melbourne live scene. This time around the boys have combined their visions into one band and hopefully stamp their music on Melbourne and beyond. www.myspace.com/21summers

The Curious Few dare to challenge the mainstream, where rock has become driven more by style and look than the sound and the passion. Founded by Cazz in 2004, The Curious Few have matured with an edgy confidence, playing to appreciative audiences in the usual Melbourne haunts and a tour of regional Victoria, and have received airplay on Melbourne stations 3RRR, 3PBS and 3CR for their latest release “Hard Road”.

Playing originals in a style that while is best described as “rock”, flirts with elements of blues, garage and pop. Their influences are many and wide-ranging; from Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin; to The Stooges, Beasts of Bourbon and The Scientist. The Curious Few present a wealth of material that any fan of raw guitar driven rock will no doubt enjoy. www.thecuriousfew.com

Thur 8 June

Bandroom: Comedy is taking a break and will be back soon.

Fri 9 June
Bandroom: The Quarrelmen $12, 8.30pm

The Quarrelmen specialise in performing late period Beatles songs that were never designed for live performance. The songs that they play are purely studio creations which have a strong emphasis on complex production techniques. Due to the wonders of modern musical technology, the band are able to reproduce these songs in a live setting. Everything they do is live. They do not believe in the use of backing tracks.

They are not a “tribute” act in strictest sense of the word. They do not mimic the Beatles’ image, fashions or individual personas. Rather, their mission is to present Beatles material as faithfully as possible. The Quarrelmen have been playing irregularly since showcasing a complete live performance of the White Album in November 1998. The performance of material from Beatles releases never designed for live performance, together with a healthy assortment of earlier songs in a cosy pub environment has always been the band’s policy.

Sat 10 June

Public Bar: Austin Floyd. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

Murray Floyd’s idea was a simple one. Why not get a few guys from your local, put a band together and play a few gigs out the back of the pub on Sunday afternoons. The band was to play original material, a mixture of country and rock, and was all about having a good time. And so, a couple of years ago, Austin Floyd was born, with all four members recruited from the same bar, beers still in hand. After playing their first gig, it was pretty apparent that the band was onto something.

The reaction was overwhelming and before to long they found themselves being booked for gigs all around town. The appeal of Austin Floyd is as simple as the idea that the brought the band together, to have a good time, have a laugh and enjoy some fine music. Fresh off the back of their shows in Brisbane, Austin Floyd are excited to be returning to the south of the Yarra with a special show featuring all the material from their debut album “Month of Sundays”, as well as several new songs in preparation for their upcoming EP. The boys don’t mind a beer either, so get ready for a raucous night of country blues rock.

Sun 11 June

Wed 31 May
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Golgotha Boys Choir, The Electric Trees + Rocktonamus. Free, 8pm

Golgotha Boys Choir formed in late 2003. It all began with a demo tape of several songs which vocalist Steven Fink wrote and recorded in his own bedroom. Influenced by artists such as Prince, David Bowie and Trent Reznor, the tape became a blueprint for Fink’s vision to create a band which combined musical elements of pop, rock, punk and metal with suavely fitted suits and dynamic, theatrical live performances. With Gino Carrapetta on drums, followed by Ian Shoebridge on guitar, and a bassist appropriately named Sid. The name Golgotha Boys Choir was decided upon, making it a perfect compliment to the dynamics of the music and themes contained in the lyrics. Sid was eventually replaced in 2005 by Justin Min, an accomplished sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist. With their new solid line-up Golgotha Boys Choir are currently recording their debut album and making a video for the first single to accompany the album, expected to be released in mid-2006.

The Electric Trees are an amalgamation of melodic, alternative and progressive guitar driven rock with an emphasis on melody, spaciousness and chiaroscuro effect. Between the ages of 18-24, they have a sound that may be comparable to something like Radiohead/Led Zeppelin/The Doors. The songs and sounds are quite diverse. The Electric Trees aim to avoid all the standard songwriting clichés whilst still remaining somewhat commercial. With gigs all around Victoria, The Electric Trees are gaining valuable experience.

The Rocktonamus movement is born. This new hard rocking band comprises of three young talented musicians with their heads in the clouds and their feet firmly planted in the power stance position. Rocktonamus thrives on playing live shows and rocks with a one for all and all for one attitude. Drawing on influences such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and Oasis, the band creates a unique raw rock sound. Most of all Rocktonamus are dedicated to the delivery of an inspirational high-energy rock experience.

Tue 23 May

Q: How many James Bond movie titles have just one word in the title? A: 5
Q: What is ‘felicide’? A: Killing a cat.

The champion jumper among insects is the common flea. The ant is one of the “giants” of the insect world. With strong jaws he is able to carry 50 times his own weight. Find out more weird and wonderful facts every Tuesday at the Greyhound Hotel. Entry is free, kick off is 8pm.

Wed 24 May
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Detective Social, Bungalow Sounds + To Get The Girls. Free, 8pm

Detective Social are a young four piece band out of Melbourne that aim to be the most original band since Jet (joke). After just recently recording their first demo in a friends lounge room, the lads are now aiming to gig as much as possible and hopefully gain some followers along the way. The band has been together for around 6 months now, and are influenced by a wide range of music such as Bloc Party, explosions in the sky and Death Cab for Cutie. Their live performance is as much apart of the experience as the music itself, and Detective Social urge you to put this theory to the test! Without talking the guys up any further like every other indie bio out there, make up your own mind and check out ‘Detective Social’. www.myspace.com/detectivesocial

Bungalow Sounds is a five-piece indie band from Melbourne. Some say - genealogically speaking – that we’re the bastard grandchildren of Edward Scissorhands and Golden Books, Nick Cave and Grandaddy, Marilyn Manson and Robbie Williams (oddly that’s one too many grandparents). But really, we’re just a metaphysical beanbag, bent on being loved, victims of an urban psyche, encapsulating the music that connects people like us with people like them. You’ll see.

“Radio In A Rabbit Hole”, the third EP from To Get The Girls, is set to be released shortly, progressing further than they ever have before with the band’s unique style of what THEY know as Rock Music. The music that To Get The Girls produce is a style that has yet to be attained by most bands in their local music scene: pop-punk without the pop or the punk, alternative without the “look”, screamo without the bitching, arty without the arrogance, and experimental without being impossible to listen to. The band cites many influences, ranging from Brand New, Jimmy Eat World and The Get Up Kids, to Weezer and Damien Rice. With such a wide range of musical tastes, its no wonder the band creates such diverse yet simple music, without pushing the whole “originality” thing down people’s throats. Honest to their roots, yet original enough to maintain interest.

Don’t let the name fool you though, To Get The Girls isn’t a name to emphasize the childishness of the bands members or music, it is more of a parody on themselves, a “piss-take” if you will, and a catchy one at that. It demonstrates the tongue in cheek nature of the band, not necessarily their music. The music fashioned by TGTG is dynamic yet subtle, brutal yet catchy, honest yet fun, and so deep you could swim in it. www.togetthegirls.vze.com www.myspace.com/togetthegirls

Thur 25 May
Bandroom: Comedy is taking a break and will be back soon.

Fri 26 May
Bandroom: Intoxica, The Naked Eye + The Murder Birds $10, 8.30pm

The one and only Intoxica in a not to be missed show. These Melbourne legends play so rarely these days you’d be a fool to pass this one up. Experience their unique blend of psychobilly, surf apocalypse, and relentless rock’n’roll presented in blistering live performance and you’ll understand how they came to influence and inspire so many of today’s “new rock” acts.

Support on the night from The Naked Eye and The Murder Birds.

Formed in some obscure eon (possibly the ’90’s), from the remnants of a couple of like minded combos, the Naked Eye take the best parts of the Who, MC5, Ramones, Eastern Dark, Sunnyboys, The Saints and ’60’s garage punk and create a melodic racket that lodges in the part of the brain where real emotions live. In 2002 the band released their debut cd “From Obscurity To Nowhere”. This created a minor ground swell in Europe, particularly in France, Spain and Germany. The band continued to play sporadically around town, with occasional heavy bouts of hikikomori. Highlights included shows with the New Christs, Powder Monkeys, DM3 and Hoss. During this time songs kept coming and another album worth of material was ready and waiting. The bands latest offering “Done And Dusted” is a mighty follow up to “Obscurity” and sees the band deliver another batch of powerful rock songs. The Naked Eye have never considered themselves fashion on the field contenders, but as far as quality song writing and powerful live shows go you’d be hard pressed to find a better rock band playing in Melbourne right now!

Formed in October 2005 from the ashes of several popular bands, The Murder Birds have already won a legion of admirers with their uncompromising brand of kick-ass rock. But experience is only one element in the rock ‘n’ roll equation - you still need killer songs that capture imaginations and performances that are on the money night after night. The Murder Birds have all bases covered. Songwriter Kelly Fraser-Parle has an uncanny knack for penning dark, addictive tunes of carnal pleasures and hedonistic excesses that stick in your head despite the nasty sting in their tail. The Murder Birds live show has enough raw energy to power a small city! Sonically, The Murder Birds conjure up the spirit of groups like The Saints and The Jam, The Who and AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. 2006 promises to be a mad year for The Murder Birds, and as far as these boys are concerned, the madder the better!

Sat 27 May

Public Bar: The Gammarays. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

The Gammarays have emerged from the briny depths of the Great Southern Ocean as keepers of the secret surf rock knowledge. But they’re not selfish - it’s The Gammarays intention to share the once forgotton sound with anyone who cares to listen. For forty years the surf rock sound lay hidden on the floor of Port Philip Bay. But due to climactic change and an unseasonally rare Tsunami in mid-2001 off St Kilda, the sound was washed ashore. Don Ely, a noted Melbourne guitarist stumbled upon it during a drunken early morning swim and the rest, as they say, is history. With his pals Chaos (drums), Andrew Kentler (bass) and Chris Docherty (organ), The Gammarays treat the sound with respect.

Sun 28 May
Public Bar: Jeannie Lushes, free from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

The formation of Jeannie Lushes (& the Lubricators) was in 2000 as a 50s rockabilly/rock n roll band. For four years Ms Lushes entertained patrons throughtout the city and out of state with this raw sound but was itching to do what she loved most. Lushes acquired an early love of gospel music and blues, so she put away the blue suede shoes and chose to do what she loved most - and so the birthing of Texas Blues became. She is staffed by 4 of Melbourne’s best blues musicians - guitarist Mark Harpo (Rockin’ Daddies), saxophonist Mark McGurgan (V8’s), bassist Glen (Nightstalkers) and drummer John Stockton (Tin Pan Alley).

Don’t let their demure demeanour fool you – Immersion’s sound is heavy and dynamic yet extremely infectious, and springs from a unique blend of big guitar sounds and driving rhythms. Immersion was formed from the remnants of Perth rock act Aurakil. Aurakil began in 2000, and in 2001 they released their debut EP entitled IMMERSION. Having conquered the Perth music scene, Aurakil set their sights on a new challenge - the big city of Melbourne. The move in 2003 presented a chance for the band to re-form, re-brand and re-label and consequently, Immersion was born.

Immersion have earned their stripes supporting a range of rock heavyweights on the East and West coasts including the Cruel Sea, Sunk Loto, Karnivool, Subtruck and The Fuzz. They have recently been busy performing around the local Melbourne scene and that, combined with their involvement in initiatives such as Freeza and The Push is winning them new fans, keeping rock alive at the grass roots level and making it accessible for all ages. Expect something a little different to the usual guitar based rock act. Immersion’s individual sound comes from hook – laden rhythm guitar riffs, melodic lead lines, driving bass and a solid, hard-hitting rhythm section combined with a powerful female voice.

Fri 28 April
Bandroom: Mercy Kills, Brutal Pancho + Three Letter Word. 8.30pm, $6

The Mercy Kills (formerly Mercy Killers) kick it out at the Greyhound on Friday April 28th. The guys and gal will be ripping through their dark rock pop from the new EP Mercy Killers. Get down to the skinny dog for a dirty, messy, trashy night of sexy rock. www.myspace.com/themercykills

Brutal Pancho are an aggressive hard driving three piece rock band with an exceptional set of blistering yet dangerously addictive world class songs that will make you take notice from the second the first chord is struck. Their influences include Supersuckers, Turbonegro, ACDC and Foo Fighters. The band have just recorded a new EP in February this year, receiving radio coverage on JJJ, MMM and Melbourne community stations, as well as TV coverage on Rage, Noise TV and Syn TV. Having built a rock solid following in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth playing packed headline shows and supporting international and local acts, Brutal Pancho are now aiming towards touring over seas to Europe, Japan and USA. For more info visit www.brutalpancho.com

Dynamic Melbourne trio three letter word burst onto the original music scene in March 2005 after releasing their first self-titled EP. Since then they have been playing regular gigs in Melbourne venues and playing country gigs as much as they can. With television appearances on Channel 31 and SBS through NoiseTV, and community radio exposure, they are quickly making their mark. They have also gained credibility with their song, Therapy recently being selected as one of the songs for the 2006 AIRPLAY Rock Sampler. three letter word have just recorded their second EP, titled Therapy, with Peter “Reggie” Bowman (ex-Southern Sons) as recording engineer. They are extremely excited with how the new EP has turned out, and are looking forward to playing and promoting it extensively. Public Bar: Ian Rilen + The Love Addicts. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

For three decades, clutching only a bunch of street-level songs and a weathered bass or six-string guitar for protection, the mercurial Ian Rilen has been an indestructible figure on the Australian music scene. He’s outlived the infamous Rose Tattoo and seminal underground outfit X and is now charting his own unique musical path, with solo shows and gigs fronting his raw yet melodic long-time band, The Love Addicts featuring long time collaborator Cathy Green.

A Sydney radio announcer once likened the Ian Rilen live experience to “being served cocktails in the gutter”. Pull up a piece of kerbside, forget the mainstream and charge your glass. Paraphrasing again (Neil Young this time), the ride might be a whole lot rougher but it’s infinitely more interesting.

Public Bar: Slim Whittle Show from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Stormbringer + War Pigs, $10 from 4pm
Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Slim Whittle and his band Country Killed will be playing at the Greyhound Hotel in the public bar on Sunday April 30 from 5pm. Country Killed had a brand new line-up: Dave Mole (Shonky Tonk) on guitar and lap steel, Gary (Brolga) Coughlin (ex Goanna, Brian Petersen) on bass and introducing Dougie McDonald on drums. Slim says “This is my hottest line-up yet. Each one of these guys is an outstanding musician in his own right, they all understand and have an abiding love of Country Music (two rare qualities, believe me) and they can all sing; what more could I want?”

Country Killed has gone through a lot of changes in the last twenty years. The spilt with Neon Leon (The Speed Kings) was nasty. There were musical differences that ended in instruments being thrown on stage. ”Some reckon I’m a real bastard to work with and I go through musicians like INXS goes through lead singers, but the fact is I have a bunch of songs I want to get just right and I believe I now have the guys who can help me achieve that goal. We all love playing together and can’t wait for the first strum the first bar of our opening song at the Hound on Sunday 30th.”

Wed 12 April
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Fortnight, Bravado + Push Button Auto. Free, 8pm

The Band is Bravado. Ex-punk-rockers who have taken on a much more sophisticated sound. Frustrated with the decline of Melbourne’s punk scene into a musical hell, run by retro-rock-revival bands and an abundance of Emo. The boys have cast aside their former moniker Morris and The Animals and have gone about to destroy all things popular and force audiences into submission. What You get is a Driving, Furious, Lusty sound that will leave you on your knees waiting eagerly for the second song.

The members responsible for this audio-carnage are the tiny but mighty Alex on The Skins, James on Keys, Bass-man Hugh and fronted by Hap-Hazard Guitarist and Vocalist Dylan. All seasond Performers ranging from the ages 18 – 22 the Boys are bound to make a chaotic yet effective impression on the Melbourne music scene with their focused attitude, strong Punk-rock ethics and a somewhat disturbing sense of humour. This before conquering the rest of the world. So prepare…

Melbourne four-piece Push Button Auto formed in 2001. In January 2004, the band released a self-titled EP and followed it up with their debut album ‘How To Woo Women’ in April. Their second album ‘A Gun and A Girl’ was released in September 2005. Push Button Auto is proud of their independence, producing all their own work. www.pushbuttonauto.com

Public Bar: The Exotics. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

The Exotics and Intoxica deliver cramps-styled psychobilly mixed with garage-swamp rock. Hardly original, but full of beer-swilling humour, urban sleaze, re-fried boogie riffs, distorted bass lines and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins-like vocal yelps and growls nonetheless. Intoxica issued the album Intoxica and single `Brandivino Party’/`Raging Sea’ in 1990. The band gigged sporadically and issued a second single, `I Wanna Wear Your Skin’/`Mad Man’, `Squad Car’ on the Giant Claw label (March 1993), before signing off with a second album in 1994. Tony Shaw went on to front The Exotics, who issued a single in August 1997, `You Drive Me Coo Coo Baby!’.

Sun 16 April
Public Bar: Maurice Frawley + The Hard Yards, free from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Hailing from a farming community in Northern Victorian, Maurice Frawley ventured down to Melbourne in the late 1970s and became a guitarist in Paul Kelly’s early band the Dots. He helped write “Look So Fine, Feel So Low” before moving on to the legendary Olympic Sideburns. In the early 1990s he formed Maurice Frawley & Working Class Ringos with double bass player Shane Walsh. The Ringos band members all had fine musical pedigree - dobro player Charlie Owen played with Tex, Don & Charlie and the Beasts of Bourbon, Shane Walsh with Red Rivers and drummer Des Hefner did a stint with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

The release of the Ringos third album ‘Triple Skin Marquee’ lead to the inclusion of the track “Harness Down” on the ABC ‘Airplay Vol. 3′ compilation. Featured on ABC local radio, “Harness Down” proved one of the favourites of its vast listening audience and resulted in several tours through the east coast of Australia and up to Far North Queensland. Maurice Frawley and his band performed live sessions in 2000 on the ABC TV’s national music program ‘Studio 22′ and in 2001 on the cable channel Music Country. In 2003 Maurice Frawley embarked on a special family project Frawleys & Friends that culminated in the critically acclaimed 2003 release ‘Queen of Runnymede’.

In 2005 Maurice invited Garrett Costigan (pedal steel), Alan Brooker (bass guitar), Jimmy Williams (electric guitars) and Craig Williamson (drums) to join his new band Maurice Frawley & The Yard Hands. Maurice’s new album ‘Good Things’ will be released in April 2006 on his own label Red Finn Records. All the details are available at www.mauricefrawley.com

Wed 5 April
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w The Christinas, Race The Fray + Happy Plastic. Free, 8pm
The Christina’s are a rock and roll band (Who are all blokes, don’t let the sissy name fool ya!) who play rock and roll and are hell bent on either making it big in the music business or writing and producing a musical about Checkers (There’s one for Chess so why not Checkers!!!). What does this grotty pub band sound like I hear you ask? Think members of’ ‘Spinal Tap’, ‘Tenacious D’ and ‘Blood duster’ collectively playing a cover of ‘Evie let your hair hang down’ in some dank little Melbourne pub… Needless to say we think playing rock is awesome and we like to think we send people home both satisfied and horrified. We have been around in one shape or form for about six years but are only now making our push for glory. www.thechristinas.com

Race The Fray “These hotly tipped Melbourne rockers have just released an impressive new EP” The Age, Melbourne.
Race The Fray’s second EP [This Art Will Play] was released in September 2005 and supported by a national tour. Known locally as ‘The Fray’, word of mouth has been a great ally for this independent band. They have been playing around for a few years now, and have quickly built a loyal following. 2006 sees the first official single released from ‘This Art Will Play’ along with plenty of touring and hopefully a new record later on in the year………so hang on and let the fucken children dance! www.racethefray.com

Happy Plastic is a project which brings back together 3 talented and very different individuals - Mars, Attila + Coutie. The band has recorded their debut EP both in Australia and London, England most notably at the famous Town House Studios (Placebo, Bush). The band is currently in the process of mixing the EP to have it ready for release, set for May. Happy Plastic is currently looking at touring especially in the UK and Europe with firm offers. The band is currently involved in creative meetings with a number of video/film companies. “We plan to get something really visually exciting for our first single” informs Mars. Then it’s a HEAVY promotional campaign aimed at making their target demographic audience Happy Plastic AWARE!

Thur 6 April
Bandroom: Comedy w Greg Fleet, CJ Fortuna, Adam Rozenbachs + more. $12 / $8 from 8pm.

Adam Rozenbachs is one of Australia’s most sought after comedy writers and stand-up comedians. Recently, he’s appeared on Spicks & Specks and radio station Nova 100, and his ability to work in small, darkened spaces with little or no water has allowed him to be a staff writer for shows like Before the Game and Spicks & Specks. Adam began stand-up comedy in 1999, going on to be a state finalist in Triple J’s Raw Comedy in only his third month of stand-up.

Adam began his comedy career at Melbourne radio station 3RRR, co-hosting Whole Lotta Shonky from 1997 until 1999. In 2000, he went on to become a writer for the 9 Network’s Russell Gilbert Live tonight show and Russell Gilbert Was ‘Ere sketch show. Adam has also written for Beat and Metro magazines, as well as The Big Issue (which he also buys out of guilt). And long before the comedy dream began, Adam was a producer for the Triple M network, working on such shows as the Crud Show, The Grill Team , Triple M Football and the Schnitzel Brothers with Eric Bana and Dave O’Neil. Catch this fabulous comic (and lover of metal music) at the Greyhound on Thursday April 6.

Sat 8 April
Public Bar: P-Tex. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

Once they were 6. Now they are 5 for one legendary warrior has wandered off on a brave solo quest to battle the beasts of the evil god Nappysan.
Yes, this is the story of P-Tex. Anyway… So Conrad, the upright bass player dude and Man in Black, became a Daddy and consequently retired from Rawk duties, leaving the band potentially without a bottom end. Which can be painful.

But then, in an act of heroism young, plucky drill sergeant and keyboard player, Al-G, put his hand up for the role. “I’ll do it!” he squeaked. “I’ll look after the baby!!” When that met with a stony silence, Al-G then realised that it would be better for all concerned to move to the bass guitar instead. Which he promptly did, resulting in what the critics are calling “a leaner, meaner sound”, “less tinkly” and “what happened to Conrad?”

Thus the band is out and about promoting their recent album ‘Windsor’ in a flurry of gigs near and far and drumming up a swag of sexy new tunes like Stones-ish disco tune ‘Try, Try Try’, the soulful pub rawk ballad ‘Prayer’ and the balls-out, forthcoming single ‘Long Gone’, featuring former drill sergeant, now corporal, Al-G on shouting, slick gee-tarist Al-B on monster riffing, Mick D on mouth-wide-open rhythm twang, Maz on slam dunk drrrruummms and the usual frontperson bloke, Bern, on backing vocals, tambourine and general hip swivellin’. www.ptex.com.au

Public Bar: Doug Mansfield + The Dust Devils, free from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Doug Mansfield + The Dust Devils play a toe‑tappin’, foot stompin’ brand of original and traditional country music in the honky‑tonk style. In 1996 they released their debut CD ‘You can never go home’. They have played the Tamworth, Portland and Kyneton festivals. Their video of the song ‘One More Beer’ has received extensive airplay on CMT, as well as being selected by John Nutting of the ABC as the opening song on the ‘Saturday Night Country Favourites’ CD. Several of Doug’s songs have featured in the television shows ‘Good Guys Bad Guys’ and Stingers. ‘One More Beer’ will also feature in a forthcoming motion picture. Their last album Trouble Follows Me’ reached the finals in three categories at the 2000 Victorian Country Music Awards. Doug and some members of his band appeared in a recent episode of ‘Stingers’. 4 songs also featured in the show.

Wed 15 March
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Y, Carousel + Iris. 8pm free entry.
Y is 6 musicians with varying tastes converging into a unique dynamic. The name Y is a symbolic representation of the themes that inspire the songs. The phenomena of creation, life and death, male and female, permanence and loss, division, branching out, a fork in the road, the split between spirit and flesh, freedom and restriction, peeling away and following. Though, looked at from another angle it can represent, unification and convergence, or 3 equal parts such as the Holy Trinity (the creative impetus, the bridge of spirit, the physical experience), body, mind, spirit etc. The Y shape is a naturally occurring one, and can be found in a myriad of places such as paths, rivers, trees, the human body, man made structures and objects. Our name signals from the world all around. www.myspace.com/0y0

Delivering intense live shows packed with melodies, Carousel’s brand of Rock attaches instantly to your subconscious. Since returning from the National tour; where the band played venues such as the Metro in Sydney and the Great Northern in Byron Bay, Carousel have been busy preparing for a bumper year in 2006. Still yet to have been “officially” released, Carousel’s debut EP Fragments has already started to receive prime time radio play on Kerrang Radio UK and BBC Radio in the UK of which the response has been overwhelming. With international interest creeping in, this will not be the last you have heard of Carousel. www.carouseltheband.com

Iris is a four-piece pop/rock band based in Melbourne. The vision behind IRIS is simple – pop/rock melody driven tunes, telling real and meaningful stories that people can identify and make a connection with. What makes their songs special lies in the poetic and passionately charged lyrics. The boys experiences and raw talent enable them to tap into the everyday emotions of those listening and it is in the lyrics in each of the songs that the listener can find powerful, soulful and inspiring interpretations of life, lust, love, and even tragedy. In November 04, after intensive rehearsals during the year, Iris played their first gig to a packed crowd. Hot off the heels of an endorphin high, the band have been gigging regularly around Melbourne ever since. www.officialiris.com

Wed 8 March
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Robot Army, Sons Of Messengers + Sam Lombardi. 8pm free entry.
Jager continues its support of all things fresh and new in Australian music. This week check out:

Robot Army features singer/songwriter Reegan ‘Rex’ Jolley got together with Danny Simcic drummer/producer/writer. The band is made up from people in their network of session players and cover band regulars, producing tunes more within a commercial rock sense than alternative/Indie vibe. They have played a couple of gigs, and are only now beginning to define their sound. There’s a bit of ‘70’s metal guitar influence, over ‘80’s riffs and hooky melodies. This current guitar (soon to add synths) based line up is easy to get into for the first time listener.

Sons of Messengers are 4 piece hard-edged rock band, born and bred in the musical hotbed of Melbourne. Their brand of high energy, high voltage, high chance of injury rock has been entertaining audiences since the beginning of 2005, while also soothing the pains of the technological/industrial age with subtleties and groove. Their catchy hooks and interesting ideas give the songs a memorable edge. Come and live the excitement that only SOMs can deliver and feel the presence generated by the bands music and onstage energy www.sonsofmessengers.com

16 year old Samantha Lombardi is a new style of rocker with attitude and enthusiasm to burn. When she’s not playing guitar or listening to her favourite bands, chances are Sam will be singing her lungs out. With her unique voice and style, Sam Lombardi has already accomplished a lot in her short singing career, and will no doubt achieve further success in the near future with the release of her debut album, “take your pic”.

The album features songs written by John Ingoldsby and Charlie Clouser of NIN, Andreas Carlsson of The Location and has been produced by Andreas Mood (AM Productions in Stockholm/Sweden, Darren Noble of Titanium Productions in NY, Phil Haywood of Flashpoint UK in London, and all vocal production has been produced by Danny Simcic (Attitude in Rhythm Productions) and Clarence Jey (Apollo Music) in Australia. Sam has also co-written 3 songs on her forthcoming album, “take your pic” and the album is now under license to Black Sea Records Group in Florida USA and was penned for nationwide release in December 2005. Expect Japanese, UK and European release of the first single, Young & Stupid and the album in early 2006. www.samanthalombardi.com

Bandroom: COMEDY w Dave O’Neil, Lawrence Mooney, David Hamley + more. 8pm entry $12/8.
Mumma’s making Canton - doesn’t take long - for word to get around. Is it just me, or is that damn ad addictive? Laughs galore with 3 of Melbourne’s finest gentlemen of grin, and more. Nova funny man Dave O’Neil stays up late for a special appearance at the Greyhound Hotel - don’t miss it.

Fri 10 March
Bandroom: Jager Hot Shots with RooK, The Need, Days Of Red + Illumni. 8.30pm $10
Jager presents 4 of the standout bands from recent Uprising gigs - wrap your musical tastebuds around these outfits and see what’s cookin’ in Melbourne’s new music scene.

RooK (formerly known as Paper Street Sound Company) is the new force in Australian heavy rock. Formed in Melbourne’s Bayside area in late 2002, RooK has firmly established their place at the top of Australia’s hard rock scene through an unrelenting live presence. Led by Forbes McKail, arguably one of the best hard rock vocalists in Melbourne, RooK combine emotionally charged energy with a raw, chunky drive. Tyson Fish’s soaring, uplifting sounds combined with the driving rhythm section of Ben Foley and Adam May create the perfect mix of power and melody.

RooK’s high energy live performances see them regularly fill Melbourne’s most prestigious inner city pub venues including the Espy, Greyhound and Duke of Windsor. With their fan base constantly growing, they are now enjoying 600+ crowds at venues like the Corner Hotel and the HiFi Bar & Ballroom. August sees the release of RooK’s eagerly-anticipated EP Transitions – five tracks that showcase their diversity in sound, song craft and musicianship. Whether RooK play as a fully-amplified, full-power rock band or in an intimate acoustic performance, they leave audiences inspired and exhausted!www.rookband.com

The Need have created an original yet familiar sound combining power and energy with majestic melodies. Even though they consider themselves rock, this groove based four piece have found it difficult to be set in one genre. They will be releasing their second independent release by December this year featuring 5 of the 11 tracks recorded by JT at Debasement and produced by Michael Zamit. Having been together for almost four years they have played all around Melbourne including the Espy, Mercury Lounge, Palladium, and tons of little pubs. With a residency at Hotel Brighton they have been able to entertain a growing audience for almost two years, never failing to impress. www.theneed.info

Hailing from Melbourne, Days of Red play a unique sound of emotion and ag
