Wed 12 July
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w September, Evolusion + Young Eleanor. Free, 8pm.

It all began for September in 1998 when Joe and Slava, former residents of the USSR, were walking down Acland Street in St Kilda drinking cask wine and singing the latest chart smash from Dr.Alban when they were confronted by a 2 meter tall, scraggly haired giant of a man who made it very clear that their choice of material was sub par. The giant man very quickly picked up on Joe and Slava’s horrendous Russian accents and introduced himself as Denis Aleksandrovich Semchenko or Denis to his close friends

Joe and Slava returned to Melbourne in 2003. Joe resumed writing and recording songs in a power pop vein. September occasionally played gigs with pick-up musicians until the recent recruitment of multi-instrumentalist and all-around nice guy Solomon to fill out bass duties. The band released a new album of original material, “Not Enough Stars in the Sky”, in March 2006. The album contains power pop, straight r’n’r, garage rock and surf instrumentals.

www.myspace.com/septembertheband

This is a band whose evolution began 5 years ago at a local pub. Two of the members were only 13 back then, yet their dynamic stage presence and exciting musicality consistently drew crowds of 150 weekly. The four piece are: 18 year old twins Markus and Julian - Drums & Bass, Demis - Guitars and Vocals and Christian - Guitars and Vocals. Evolusion have discovered a new rock style that is yet to be defined, but can be traced back to arena/epic/pop styles. In a world where people are almost told how to dress, which culture to be a part of and what to listen to…Evolusion have the sound that everyone’s been waiting for, original, powerful and real. www.myspace.com/evolusion

Young Eleanor Questions the Naked Chicken, is the name of the debut EP from the lads and lady that make up this band. It was recorded mostly in February ’06 by Chris Brady. Bound by a mutual love of curling and lapsang souchong, the members of Young Eleanor enjoy giving collective birth to the aural sensation that we call music almost as much as they enjoy referring to themselves in third person. When prompted to pigeonhole their shtick, the band will generally contort their faces in a goofy way and mumble pop/rock.

If, as the X-Files hypothesised, the truth is indeed out there, though, it would probably state that Young Eleanor’s sound lay somewhere between Holly Golightly and the Eagles; stopping at Little Barrie’s house on the way for cheese and crackers. On a more visually obvious note though, the band actually consists of three young folk - Ms Ellie Bailey on drums, while Charles Martin sings and swaps bass and guitar duties with Yuri Koskov-Koskov between songs. When available, the band is joined by friend and ex-Polyvinyl member Alex Caffrey.

Thur 13 July
Bandroom: Paddy Chong & Kaos Presents Electric Mayhem w The Hostiles, Janine Marshall Band + 4tress. $6, 8pm

Ever wonder what Paddy Chong and Kaos got for their birthdays as kids? A Bass, a Drumkit and holidays at the Von Trapp family home in Salzburg and they want to bring it all home to The Greyhound Hotel in St. Kilda. Drummers, Bass Players and even normal people lend us your Beers and we’ll show you how to keep that childish edge right through your adult years. So we’re inviting everyone we know, everyone we’ve played with and everyone we’d like to know to come and have one, listen to music, laugh, jam and get responsibly annihilated all in the name of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The Hostiles, Janine Marshall Band + 4tress will be playing through the night. Drink specials throughout the night, if you don’t go home feeling like Big Kev then come back and we’ll give it to you twice as loud !!

Fri 14 July
Bandroom: Shedguest, Tresnard + The Keepers $6 9pm.

In a rock scene where so many bands look and sound the same, in a perpetual climate of just-turn-it-up-and-bash-it-out punk, in a sea of messy, whiney garage rock, Shedguest are good for what ails ‘ya. These guys are a breath of fresh air for hard rock fans that are losing faith in things like creativity and variety. Sick of seeing the same bands taking to the stage with the same act week after week, the three boys from Shedguest decided to do something other than complain.

Swinging from heavy, punchy, ballsy hard rock riffs, to smokey, husky, bluesy melodies, to dirty, funky, skanky guitar magic, Shedguest go out of their way not to be rock stars, not to impress chicks (they couldn’t anyway), but to keep you interested. If you’re a rock fan, come and see it done a little differently. No bullshit. No make-up. No phony fuckin’ attitude.

Sat 15 July
Public Bar: Large No. 12’s + P-Tex. Free, 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

It will be a battle of epic proportions, along the lines of Napoleon and Nelson, Australia and Italy, and Torvill and Dean. The winner will take away the trophy for ‘Best Live Act At The Greyhound On Sat 15th Of July, Except For The Other Live Act That Night Who Were Pretty Darn Fine Too’. So expect it to be real tense as two of the South side of the river’s finest, P Tex and The Large No 12’s, fight the good fight and fly the flag of old style St Kilda Pub rawk before it all disappears in a sea of pubs with large windows, plasma screens and gourmet pizzas. Marvel as Horse and Al-B compare hair products! Gasp as Wes and Bern trade vocal licks, and thrill to some most excellent music. It’s free, the beer’s cold and the bands are hot. What more do you want?

Sun 16 July
Public Bar: Hey Gringo. Free, 5pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred T Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Hey Gringo is the creation of songwriter, multi instrumentalist Daryl Roberts along with Paul Gadsby formed an acoustic original and selective tongue in cheek covers duo in the mid 90s. Daryl decided to take things to another level forming a band and recording their debut album I WAS THERE in 2000 with the amazing Nicky Bomba (Bomba, Banana Oil, John Butler Trio). The album met with rave reviews and airplay across Oz and all the way to Argentina, Canada, Netherlands, Belgium & Germany.

They have now released their second album FUNKY CAR with a steady giging line-up are taking the Australian Blues/Roots music scene by storm. Hey Gringo’s groove injected, retro tinged all original repertoire pays tribute to the influences of the creative era of the 70s Oz music scene with the freshness of Now. With three songwriters and vocals all around their recordings include guest performances by some of Australia’s most influential roots music artist.

Wed 7 June

Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Valerie, 21 Summers + The Curious Few. Free, 8pm

Valerie is a cutting edge brand new Melbourne band consisting of two singers, two guitarists, a bassist and drummer, ranging from ages 18-23. Their sound is unique but very commercial. It may loosely be called a rock band, but an ‘extreme’, very modern, but beautiful rock band. The band is driven to create something new and exciting. Hailing from two successful Melbourne bands, the members have wide experience in the industry and Melbourne music scene. Although they have not yet played live together, their experience and confidence will surely prove to do them great justice. Valerie is excited to begin their new project and watch it flourish, as they are sure it will

21 summers are a hard rocking alternative band that also has a stage presence that is second to none. 21 summers offer emotionally charged grooves with sweeping melodies that soar over the top. 21 summers came about when two Melbourne based bands From December and Picture Box fused together. Both bands did the rounds of the Melbourne live scene. This time around the boys have combined their visions into one band and hopefully stamp their music on Melbourne and beyond. www.myspace.com/21summers

The Curious Few dare to challenge the mainstream, where rock has become driven more by style and look than the sound and the passion. Founded by Cazz in 2004, The Curious Few have matured with an edgy confidence, playing to appreciative audiences in the usual Melbourne haunts and a tour of regional Victoria, and have received airplay on Melbourne stations 3RRR, 3PBS and 3CR for their latest release “Hard Road”.

Playing originals in a style that while is best described as “rock”, flirts with elements of blues, garage and pop. Their influences are many and wide-ranging; from Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin; to The Stooges, Beasts of Bourbon and The Scientist. The Curious Few present a wealth of material that any fan of raw guitar driven rock will no doubt enjoy. www.thecuriousfew.com

Thur 8 June

Bandroom: Comedy is taking a break and will be back soon.

Fri 9 June
Bandroom: The Quarrelmen $12, 8.30pm

The Quarrelmen specialise in performing late period Beatles songs that were never designed for live performance. The songs that they play are purely studio creations which have a strong emphasis on complex production techniques. Due to the wonders of modern musical technology, the band are able to reproduce these songs in a live setting. Everything they do is live. They do not believe in the use of backing tracks.

They are not a “tribute” act in strictest sense of the word. They do not mimic the Beatles’ image, fashions or individual personas. Rather, their mission is to present Beatles material as faithfully as possible. The Quarrelmen have been playing irregularly since showcasing a complete live performance of the White Album in November 1998. The performance of material from Beatles releases never designed for live performance, together with a healthy assortment of earlier songs in a cosy pub environment has always been the band’s policy.

Sat 10 June

Public Bar: Austin Floyd. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

Murray Floyd’s idea was a simple one. Why not get a few guys from your local, put a band together and play a few gigs out the back of the pub on Sunday afternoons. The band was to play original material, a mixture of country and rock, and was all about having a good time. And so, a couple of years ago, Austin Floyd was born, with all four members recruited from the same bar, beers still in hand. After playing their first gig, it was pretty apparent that the band was onto something.

The reaction was overwhelming and before to long they found themselves being booked for gigs all around town. The appeal of Austin Floyd is as simple as the idea that the brought the band together, to have a good time, have a laugh and enjoy some fine music. Fresh off the back of their shows in Brisbane, Austin Floyd are excited to be returning to the south of the Yarra with a special show featuring all the material from their debut album “Month of Sundays”, as well as several new songs in preparation for their upcoming EP. The boys don’t mind a beer either, so get ready for a raucous night of country blues rock.

Sun 11 June

Wed 31 May
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Golgotha Boys Choir, The Electric Trees + Rocktonamus. Free, 8pm

Golgotha Boys Choir formed in late 2003. It all began with a demo tape of several songs which vocalist Steven Fink wrote and recorded in his own bedroom. Influenced by artists such as Prince, David Bowie and Trent Reznor, the tape became a blueprint for Fink’s vision to create a band which combined musical elements of pop, rock, punk and metal with suavely fitted suits and dynamic, theatrical live performances. With Gino Carrapetta on drums, followed by Ian Shoebridge on guitar, and a bassist appropriately named Sid. The name Golgotha Boys Choir was decided upon, making it a perfect compliment to the dynamics of the music and themes contained in the lyrics. Sid was eventually replaced in 2005 by Justin Min, an accomplished sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist. With their new solid line-up Golgotha Boys Choir are currently recording their debut album and making a video for the first single to accompany the album, expected to be released in mid-2006.

The Electric Trees are an amalgamation of melodic, alternative and progressive guitar driven rock with an emphasis on melody, spaciousness and chiaroscuro effect. Between the ages of 18-24, they have a sound that may be comparable to something like Radiohead/Led Zeppelin/The Doors. The songs and sounds are quite diverse. The Electric Trees aim to avoid all the standard songwriting clichés whilst still remaining somewhat commercial. With gigs all around Victoria, The Electric Trees are gaining valuable experience.

The Rocktonamus movement is born. This new hard rocking band comprises of three young talented musicians with their heads in the clouds and their feet firmly planted in the power stance position. Rocktonamus thrives on playing live shows and rocks with a one for all and all for one attitude. Drawing on influences such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and Oasis, the band creates a unique raw rock sound. Most of all Rocktonamus are dedicated to the delivery of an inspirational high-energy rock experience.

Tue 23 May

Q: How many James Bond movie titles have just one word in the title? A: 5
Q: What is ‘felicide’? A: Killing a cat.

The champion jumper among insects is the common flea. The ant is one of the “giants” of the insect world. With strong jaws he is able to carry 50 times his own weight. Find out more weird and wonderful facts every Tuesday at the Greyhound Hotel. Entry is free, kick off is 8pm.

Wed 24 May
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Detective Social, Bungalow Sounds + To Get The Girls. Free, 8pm

Detective Social are a young four piece band out of Melbourne that aim to be the most original band since Jet (joke). After just recently recording their first demo in a friends lounge room, the lads are now aiming to gig as much as possible and hopefully gain some followers along the way. The band has been together for around 6 months now, and are influenced by a wide range of music such as Bloc Party, explosions in the sky and Death Cab for Cutie. Their live performance is as much apart of the experience as the music itself, and Detective Social urge you to put this theory to the test! Without talking the guys up any further like every other indie bio out there, make up your own mind and check out ‘Detective Social’. www.myspace.com/detectivesocial

Bungalow Sounds is a five-piece indie band from Melbourne. Some say - genealogically speaking – that we’re the bastard grandchildren of Edward Scissorhands and Golden Books, Nick Cave and Grandaddy, Marilyn Manson and Robbie Williams (oddly that’s one too many grandparents). But really, we’re just a metaphysical beanbag, bent on being loved, victims of an urban psyche, encapsulating the music that connects people like us with people like them. You’ll see.

“Radio In A Rabbit Hole”, the third EP from To Get The Girls, is set to be released shortly, progressing further than they ever have before with the band’s unique style of what THEY know as Rock Music. The music that To Get The Girls produce is a style that has yet to be attained by most bands in their local music scene: pop-punk without the pop or the punk, alternative without the “look”, screamo without the bitching, arty without the arrogance, and experimental without being impossible to listen to. The band cites many influences, ranging from Brand New, Jimmy Eat World and The Get Up Kids, to Weezer and Damien Rice. With such a wide range of musical tastes, its no wonder the band creates such diverse yet simple music, without pushing the whole “originality” thing down people’s throats. Honest to their roots, yet original enough to maintain interest.

Don’t let the name fool you though, To Get The Girls isn’t a name to emphasize the childishness of the bands members or music, it is more of a parody on themselves, a “piss-take” if you will, and a catchy one at that. It demonstrates the tongue in cheek nature of the band, not necessarily their music. The music fashioned by TGTG is dynamic yet subtle, brutal yet catchy, honest yet fun, and so deep you could swim in it. www.togetthegirls.vze.com www.myspace.com/togetthegirls

Thur 25 May
Bandroom: Comedy is taking a break and will be back soon.

Fri 26 May
Bandroom: Intoxica, The Naked Eye + The Murder Birds $10, 8.30pm

The one and only Intoxica in a not to be missed show. These Melbourne legends play so rarely these days you’d be a fool to pass this one up. Experience their unique blend of psychobilly, surf apocalypse, and relentless rock’n’roll presented in blistering live performance and you’ll understand how they came to influence and inspire so many of today’s “new rock” acts.

Support on the night from The Naked Eye and The Murder Birds.

Formed in some obscure eon (possibly the ’90’s), from the remnants of a couple of like minded combos, the Naked Eye take the best parts of the Who, MC5, Ramones, Eastern Dark, Sunnyboys, The Saints and ’60’s garage punk and create a melodic racket that lodges in the part of the brain where real emotions live. In 2002 the band released their debut cd “From Obscurity To Nowhere”. This created a minor ground swell in Europe, particularly in France, Spain and Germany. The band continued to play sporadically around town, with occasional heavy bouts of hikikomori. Highlights included shows with the New Christs, Powder Monkeys, DM3 and Hoss. During this time songs kept coming and another album worth of material was ready and waiting. The bands latest offering “Done And Dusted” is a mighty follow up to “Obscurity” and sees the band deliver another batch of powerful rock songs. The Naked Eye have never considered themselves fashion on the field contenders, but as far as quality song writing and powerful live shows go you’d be hard pressed to find a better rock band playing in Melbourne right now!

Formed in October 2005 from the ashes of several popular bands, The Murder Birds have already won a legion of admirers with their uncompromising brand of kick-ass rock. But experience is only one element in the rock ‘n’ roll equation - you still need killer songs that capture imaginations and performances that are on the money night after night. The Murder Birds have all bases covered. Songwriter Kelly Fraser-Parle has an uncanny knack for penning dark, addictive tunes of carnal pleasures and hedonistic excesses that stick in your head despite the nasty sting in their tail. The Murder Birds live show has enough raw energy to power a small city! Sonically, The Murder Birds conjure up the spirit of groups like The Saints and The Jam, The Who and AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. 2006 promises to be a mad year for The Murder Birds, and as far as these boys are concerned, the madder the better!

Sat 27 May

Public Bar: The Gammarays. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

The Gammarays have emerged from the briny depths of the Great Southern Ocean as keepers of the secret surf rock knowledge. But they’re not selfish - it’s The Gammarays intention to share the once forgotton sound with anyone who cares to listen. For forty years the surf rock sound lay hidden on the floor of Port Philip Bay. But due to climactic change and an unseasonally rare Tsunami in mid-2001 off St Kilda, the sound was washed ashore. Don Ely, a noted Melbourne guitarist stumbled upon it during a drunken early morning swim and the rest, as they say, is history. With his pals Chaos (drums), Andrew Kentler (bass) and Chris Docherty (organ), The Gammarays treat the sound with respect.

Sun 28 May
Public Bar: Jeannie Lushes, free from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

The formation of Jeannie Lushes (& the Lubricators) was in 2000 as a 50s rockabilly/rock n roll band. For four years Ms Lushes entertained patrons throughtout the city and out of state with this raw sound but was itching to do what she loved most. Lushes acquired an early love of gospel music and blues, so she put away the blue suede shoes and chose to do what she loved most - and so the birthing of Texas Blues became. She is staffed by 4 of Melbourne’s best blues musicians - guitarist Mark Harpo (Rockin’ Daddies), saxophonist Mark McGurgan (V8’s), bassist Glen (Nightstalkers) and drummer John Stockton (Tin Pan Alley).

Don’t let their demure demeanour fool you – Immersion’s sound is heavy and dynamic yet extremely infectious, and springs from a unique blend of big guitar sounds and driving rhythms. Immersion was formed from the remnants of Perth rock act Aurakil. Aurakil began in 2000, and in 2001 they released their debut EP entitled IMMERSION. Having conquered the Perth music scene, Aurakil set their sights on a new challenge - the big city of Melbourne. The move in 2003 presented a chance for the band to re-form, re-brand and re-label and consequently, Immersion was born.

Immersion have earned their stripes supporting a range of rock heavyweights on the East and West coasts including the Cruel Sea, Sunk Loto, Karnivool, Subtruck and The Fuzz. They have recently been busy performing around the local Melbourne scene and that, combined with their involvement in initiatives such as Freeza and The Push is winning them new fans, keeping rock alive at the grass roots level and making it accessible for all ages. Expect something a little different to the usual guitar based rock act. Immersion’s individual sound comes from hook – laden rhythm guitar riffs, melodic lead lines, driving bass and a solid, hard-hitting rhythm section combined with a powerful female voice.

Fri 28 April
Bandroom: Mercy Kills, Brutal Pancho + Three Letter Word. 8.30pm, $6

The Mercy Kills (formerly Mercy Killers) kick it out at the Greyhound on Friday April 28th. The guys and gal will be ripping through their dark rock pop from the new EP Mercy Killers. Get down to the skinny dog for a dirty, messy, trashy night of sexy rock. www.myspace.com/themercykills

Brutal Pancho are an aggressive hard driving three piece rock band with an exceptional set of blistering yet dangerously addictive world class songs that will make you take notice from the second the first chord is struck. Their influences include Supersuckers, Turbonegro, ACDC and Foo Fighters. The band have just recorded a new EP in February this year, receiving radio coverage on JJJ, MMM and Melbourne community stations, as well as TV coverage on Rage, Noise TV and Syn TV. Having built a rock solid following in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth playing packed headline shows and supporting international and local acts, Brutal Pancho are now aiming towards touring over seas to Europe, Japan and USA. For more info visit www.brutalpancho.com

Dynamic Melbourne trio three letter word burst onto the original music scene in March 2005 after releasing their first self-titled EP. Since then they have been playing regular gigs in Melbourne venues and playing country gigs as much as they can. With television appearances on Channel 31 and SBS through NoiseTV, and community radio exposure, they are quickly making their mark. They have also gained credibility with their song, Therapy recently being selected as one of the songs for the 2006 AIRPLAY Rock Sampler. three letter word have just recorded their second EP, titled Therapy, with Peter “Reggie” Bowman (ex-Southern Sons) as recording engineer. They are extremely excited with how the new EP has turned out, and are looking forward to playing and promoting it extensively. Public Bar: Ian Rilen + The Love Addicts. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

For three decades, clutching only a bunch of street-level songs and a weathered bass or six-string guitar for protection, the mercurial Ian Rilen has been an indestructible figure on the Australian music scene. He’s outlived the infamous Rose Tattoo and seminal underground outfit X and is now charting his own unique musical path, with solo shows and gigs fronting his raw yet melodic long-time band, The Love Addicts featuring long time collaborator Cathy Green.

A Sydney radio announcer once likened the Ian Rilen live experience to “being served cocktails in the gutter”. Pull up a piece of kerbside, forget the mainstream and charge your glass. Paraphrasing again (Neil Young this time), the ride might be a whole lot rougher but it’s infinitely more interesting.

Public Bar: Slim Whittle Show from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Stormbringer + War Pigs, $10 from 4pm
Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Slim Whittle and his band Country Killed will be playing at the Greyhound Hotel in the public bar on Sunday April 30 from 5pm. Country Killed had a brand new line-up: Dave Mole (Shonky Tonk) on guitar and lap steel, Gary (Brolga) Coughlin (ex Goanna, Brian Petersen) on bass and introducing Dougie McDonald on drums. Slim says “This is my hottest line-up yet. Each one of these guys is an outstanding musician in his own right, they all understand and have an abiding love of Country Music (two rare qualities, believe me) and they can all sing; what more could I want?”

Country Killed has gone through a lot of changes in the last twenty years. The spilt with Neon Leon (The Speed Kings) was nasty. There were musical differences that ended in instruments being thrown on stage. ”Some reckon I’m a real bastard to work with and I go through musicians like INXS goes through lead singers, but the fact is I have a bunch of songs I want to get just right and I believe I now have the guys who can help me achieve that goal. We all love playing together and can’t wait for the first strum the first bar of our opening song at the Hound on Sunday 30th.”

Wed 12 April
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Fortnight, Bravado + Push Button Auto. Free, 8pm

The Band is Bravado. Ex-punk-rockers who have taken on a much more sophisticated sound. Frustrated with the decline of Melbourne’s punk scene into a musical hell, run by retro-rock-revival bands and an abundance of Emo. The boys have cast aside their former moniker Morris and The Animals and have gone about to destroy all things popular and force audiences into submission. What You get is a Driving, Furious, Lusty sound that will leave you on your knees waiting eagerly for the second song.

The members responsible for this audio-carnage are the tiny but mighty Alex on The Skins, James on Keys, Bass-man Hugh and fronted by Hap-Hazard Guitarist and Vocalist Dylan. All seasond Performers ranging from the ages 18 – 22 the Boys are bound to make a chaotic yet effective impression on the Melbourne music scene with their focused attitude, strong Punk-rock ethics and a somewhat disturbing sense of humour. This before conquering the rest of the world. So prepare…

Melbourne four-piece Push Button Auto formed in 2001. In January 2004, the band released a self-titled EP and followed it up with their debut album ‘How To Woo Women’ in April. Their second album ‘A Gun and A Girl’ was released in September 2005. Push Button Auto is proud of their independence, producing all their own work. www.pushbuttonauto.com

Public Bar: The Exotics. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

The Exotics and Intoxica deliver cramps-styled psychobilly mixed with garage-swamp rock. Hardly original, but full of beer-swilling humour, urban sleaze, re-fried boogie riffs, distorted bass lines and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins-like vocal yelps and growls nonetheless. Intoxica issued the album Intoxica and single `Brandivino Party’/`Raging Sea’ in 1990. The band gigged sporadically and issued a second single, `I Wanna Wear Your Skin’/`Mad Man’, `Squad Car’ on the Giant Claw label (March 1993), before signing off with a second album in 1994. Tony Shaw went on to front The Exotics, who issued a single in August 1997, `You Drive Me Coo Coo Baby!’.

Sun 16 April
Public Bar: Maurice Frawley + The Hard Yards, free from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Hailing from a farming community in Northern Victorian, Maurice Frawley ventured down to Melbourne in the late 1970s and became a guitarist in Paul Kelly’s early band the Dots. He helped write “Look So Fine, Feel So Low” before moving on to the legendary Olympic Sideburns. In the early 1990s he formed Maurice Frawley & Working Class Ringos with double bass player Shane Walsh. The Ringos band members all had fine musical pedigree - dobro player Charlie Owen played with Tex, Don & Charlie and the Beasts of Bourbon, Shane Walsh with Red Rivers and drummer Des Hefner did a stint with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

The release of the Ringos third album ‘Triple Skin Marquee’ lead to the inclusion of the track “Harness Down” on the ABC ‘Airplay Vol. 3′ compilation. Featured on ABC local radio, “Harness Down” proved one of the favourites of its vast listening audience and resulted in several tours through the east coast of Australia and up to Far North Queensland. Maurice Frawley and his band performed live sessions in 2000 on the ABC TV’s national music program ‘Studio 22′ and in 2001 on the cable channel Music Country. In 2003 Maurice Frawley embarked on a special family project Frawleys & Friends that culminated in the critically acclaimed 2003 release ‘Queen of Runnymede’.

In 2005 Maurice invited Garrett Costigan (pedal steel), Alan Brooker (bass guitar), Jimmy Williams (electric guitars) and Craig Williamson (drums) to join his new band Maurice Frawley & The Yard Hands. Maurice’s new album ‘Good Things’ will be released in April 2006 on his own label Red Finn Records. All the details are available at www.mauricefrawley.com

Wed 5 April
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w The Christinas, Race The Fray + Happy Plastic. Free, 8pm
The Christina’s are a rock and roll band (Who are all blokes, don’t let the sissy name fool ya!) who play rock and roll and are hell bent on either making it big in the music business or writing and producing a musical about Checkers (There’s one for Chess so why not Checkers!!!). What does this grotty pub band sound like I hear you ask? Think members of’ ‘Spinal Tap’, ‘Tenacious D’ and ‘Blood duster’ collectively playing a cover of ‘Evie let your hair hang down’ in some dank little Melbourne pub… Needless to say we think playing rock is awesome and we like to think we send people home both satisfied and horrified. We have been around in one shape or form for about six years but are only now making our push for glory. www.thechristinas.com

Race The Fray “These hotly tipped Melbourne rockers have just released an impressive new EP” The Age, Melbourne.
Race The Fray’s second EP [This Art Will Play] was released in September 2005 and supported by a national tour. Known locally as ‘The Fray’, word of mouth has been a great ally for this independent band. They have been playing around for a few years now, and have quickly built a loyal following. 2006 sees the first official single released from ‘This Art Will Play’ along with plenty of touring and hopefully a new record later on in the year………so hang on and let the fucken children dance! www.racethefray.com

Happy Plastic is a project which brings back together 3 talented and very different individuals - Mars, Attila + Coutie. The band has recorded their debut EP both in Australia and London, England most notably at the famous Town House Studios (Placebo, Bush). The band is currently in the process of mixing the EP to have it ready for release, set for May. Happy Plastic is currently looking at touring especially in the UK and Europe with firm offers. The band is currently involved in creative meetings with a number of video/film companies. “We plan to get something really visually exciting for our first single” informs Mars. Then it’s a HEAVY promotional campaign aimed at making their target demographic audience Happy Plastic AWARE!

Thur 6 April
Bandroom: Comedy w Greg Fleet, CJ Fortuna, Adam Rozenbachs + more. $12 / $8 from 8pm.

Adam Rozenbachs is one of Australia’s most sought after comedy writers and stand-up comedians. Recently, he’s appeared on Spicks & Specks and radio station Nova 100, and his ability to work in small, darkened spaces with little or no water has allowed him to be a staff writer for shows like Before the Game and Spicks & Specks. Adam began stand-up comedy in 1999, going on to be a state finalist in Triple J’s Raw Comedy in only his third month of stand-up.

Adam began his comedy career at Melbourne radio station 3RRR, co-hosting Whole Lotta Shonky from 1997 until 1999. In 2000, he went on to become a writer for the 9 Network’s Russell Gilbert Live tonight show and Russell Gilbert Was ‘Ere sketch show. Adam has also written for Beat and Metro magazines, as well as The Big Issue (which he also buys out of guilt). And long before the comedy dream began, Adam was a producer for the Triple M network, working on such shows as the Crud Show, The Grill Team , Triple M Football and the Schnitzel Brothers with Eric Bana and Dave O’Neil. Catch this fabulous comic (and lover of metal music) at the Greyhound on Thursday April 6.

Sat 8 April
Public Bar: P-Tex. Free 9pm
Bandroom: The Drag Show. Winner of 5 Rainbow Awards. $10 from 8pm.

Once they were 6. Now they are 5 for one legendary warrior has wandered off on a brave solo quest to battle the beasts of the evil god Nappysan.
Yes, this is the story of P-Tex. Anyway… So Conrad, the upright bass player dude and Man in Black, became a Daddy and consequently retired from Rawk duties, leaving the band potentially without a bottom end. Which can be painful.

But then, in an act of heroism young, plucky drill sergeant and keyboard player, Al-G, put his hand up for the role. “I’ll do it!” he squeaked. “I’ll look after the baby!!” When that met with a stony silence, Al-G then realised that it would be better for all concerned to move to the bass guitar instead. Which he promptly did, resulting in what the critics are calling “a leaner, meaner sound”, “less tinkly” and “what happened to Conrad?”

Thus the band is out and about promoting their recent album ‘Windsor’ in a flurry of gigs near and far and drumming up a swag of sexy new tunes like Stones-ish disco tune ‘Try, Try Try’, the soulful pub rawk ballad ‘Prayer’ and the balls-out, forthcoming single ‘Long Gone’, featuring former drill sergeant, now corporal, Al-G on shouting, slick gee-tarist Al-B on monster riffing, Mick D on mouth-wide-open rhythm twang, Maz on slam dunk drrrruummms and the usual frontperson bloke, Bern, on backing vocals, tambourine and general hip swivellin’. www.ptex.com.au

Public Bar: Doug Mansfield + The Dust Devils, free from 5pm + BBQ from 4pm
Bandroom: Kooky Karaoke with Fred Negro + Fred P Farlowe. Free, 8.30pm

Doug Mansfield + The Dust Devils play a toe‑tappin’, foot stompin’ brand of original and traditional country music in the honky‑tonk style. In 1996 they released their debut CD ‘You can never go home’. They have played the Tamworth, Portland and Kyneton festivals. Their video of the song ‘One More Beer’ has received extensive airplay on CMT, as well as being selected by John Nutting of the ABC as the opening song on the ‘Saturday Night Country Favourites’ CD. Several of Doug’s songs have featured in the television shows ‘Good Guys Bad Guys’ and Stingers. ‘One More Beer’ will also feature in a forthcoming motion picture. Their last album Trouble Follows Me’ reached the finals in three categories at the 2000 Victorian Country Music Awards. Doug and some members of his band appeared in a recent episode of ‘Stingers’. 4 songs also featured in the show.

Wed 15 March
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Y, Carousel + Iris. 8pm free entry.
Y is 6 musicians with varying tastes converging into a unique dynamic. The name Y is a symbolic representation of the themes that inspire the songs. The phenomena of creation, life and death, male and female, permanence and loss, division, branching out, a fork in the road, the split between spirit and flesh, freedom and restriction, peeling away and following. Though, looked at from another angle it can represent, unification and convergence, or 3 equal parts such as the Holy Trinity (the creative impetus, the bridge of spirit, the physical experience), body, mind, spirit etc. The Y shape is a naturally occurring one, and can be found in a myriad of places such as paths, rivers, trees, the human body, man made structures and objects. Our name signals from the world all around. www.myspace.com/0y0

Delivering intense live shows packed with melodies, Carousel’s brand of Rock attaches instantly to your subconscious. Since returning from the National tour; where the band played venues such as the Metro in Sydney and the Great Northern in Byron Bay, Carousel have been busy preparing for a bumper year in 2006. Still yet to have been “officially” released, Carousel’s debut EP Fragments has already started to receive prime time radio play on Kerrang Radio UK and BBC Radio in the UK of which the response has been overwhelming. With international interest creeping in, this will not be the last you have heard of Carousel. www.carouseltheband.com

Iris is a four-piece pop/rock band based in Melbourne. The vision behind IRIS is simple – pop/rock melody driven tunes, telling real and meaningful stories that people can identify and make a connection with. What makes their songs special lies in the poetic and passionately charged lyrics. The boys experiences and raw talent enable them to tap into the everyday emotions of those listening and it is in the lyrics in each of the songs that the listener can find powerful, soulful and inspiring interpretations of life, lust, love, and even tragedy. In November 04, after intensive rehearsals during the year, Iris played their first gig to a packed crowd. Hot off the heels of an endorphin high, the band have been gigging regularly around Melbourne ever since. www.officialiris.com

Wed 8 March
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Robot Army, Sons Of Messengers + Sam Lombardi. 8pm free entry.
Jager continues its support of all things fresh and new in Australian music. This week check out:

Robot Army features singer/songwriter Reegan ‘Rex’ Jolley got together with Danny Simcic drummer/producer/writer. The band is made up from people in their network of session players and cover band regulars, producing tunes more within a commercial rock sense than alternative/Indie vibe. They have played a couple of gigs, and are only now beginning to define their sound. There’s a bit of ‘70’s metal guitar influence, over ‘80’s riffs and hooky melodies. This current guitar (soon to add synths) based line up is easy to get into for the first time listener.

Sons of Messengers are 4 piece hard-edged rock band, born and bred in the musical hotbed of Melbourne. Their brand of high energy, high voltage, high chance of injury rock has been entertaining audiences since the beginning of 2005, while also soothing the pains of the technological/industrial age with subtleties and groove. Their catchy hooks and interesting ideas give the songs a memorable edge. Come and live the excitement that only SOMs can deliver and feel the presence generated by the bands music and onstage energy www.sonsofmessengers.com

16 year old Samantha Lombardi is a new style of rocker with attitude and enthusiasm to burn. When she’s not playing guitar or listening to her favourite bands, chances are Sam will be singing her lungs out. With her unique voice and style, Sam Lombardi has already accomplished a lot in her short singing career, and will no doubt achieve further success in the near future with the release of her debut album, “take your pic”.

The album features songs written by John Ingoldsby and Charlie Clouser of NIN, Andreas Carlsson of The Location and has been produced by Andreas Mood (AM Productions in Stockholm/Sweden, Darren Noble of Titanium Productions in NY, Phil Haywood of Flashpoint UK in London, and all vocal production has been produced by Danny Simcic (Attitude in Rhythm Productions) and Clarence Jey (Apollo Music) in Australia. Sam has also co-written 3 songs on her forthcoming album, “take your pic” and the album is now under license to Black Sea Records Group in Florida USA and was penned for nationwide release in December 2005. Expect Japanese, UK and European release of the first single, Young & Stupid and the album in early 2006. www.samanthalombardi.com

Bandroom: COMEDY w Dave O’Neil, Lawrence Mooney, David Hamley + more. 8pm entry $12/8.
Mumma’s making Canton - doesn’t take long - for word to get around. Is it just me, or is that damn ad addictive? Laughs galore with 3 of Melbourne’s finest gentlemen of grin, and more. Nova funny man Dave O’Neil stays up late for a special appearance at the Greyhound Hotel - don’t miss it.

Fri 10 March
Bandroom: Jager Hot Shots with RooK, The Need, Days Of Red + Illumni. 8.30pm $10
Jager presents 4 of the standout bands from recent Uprising gigs - wrap your musical tastebuds around these outfits and see what’s cookin’ in Melbourne’s new music scene.

RooK (formerly known as Paper Street Sound Company) is the new force in Australian heavy rock. Formed in Melbourne’s Bayside area in late 2002, RooK has firmly established their place at the top of Australia’s hard rock scene through an unrelenting live presence. Led by Forbes McKail, arguably one of the best hard rock vocalists in Melbourne, RooK combine emotionally charged energy with a raw, chunky drive. Tyson Fish’s soaring, uplifting sounds combined with the driving rhythm section of Ben Foley and Adam May create the perfect mix of power and melody.

RooK’s high energy live performances see them regularly fill Melbourne’s most prestigious inner city pub venues including the Espy, Greyhound and Duke of Windsor. With their fan base constantly growing, they are now enjoying 600+ crowds at venues like the Corner Hotel and the HiFi Bar & Ballroom. August sees the release of RooK’s eagerly-anticipated EP Transitions – five tracks that showcase their diversity in sound, song craft and musicianship. Whether RooK play as a fully-amplified, full-power rock band or in an intimate acoustic performance, they leave audiences inspired and exhausted!www.rookband.com

The Need have created an original yet familiar sound combining power and energy with majestic melodies. Even though they consider themselves rock, this groove based four piece have found it difficult to be set in one genre. They will be releasing their second independent release by December this year featuring 5 of the 11 tracks recorded by JT at Debasement and produced by Michael Zamit. Having been together for almost four years they have played all around Melbourne including the Espy, Mercury Lounge, Palladium, and tons of little pubs. With a residency at Hotel Brighton they have been able to entertain a growing audience for almost two years, never failing to impress. www.theneed.info

Hailing from Melbourne, Days of Red play a unique sound of emotion and aggression, whilst having the ability to captivate audiences with their hard-rock style. They perform with a level of depth and maturity beyond their years. In the beginning of 2005, despite their vastly different taste in music, the boys from Days of Red formed together to write music that they felt was true to themselves. Combining Caz’s up-beat guitar lines, hard-alternative rock riffage and Matt’s tricky bass rhythms with Dan’s effortless transition between melodic hard-rock vocals and intense screams, integrate that with Sumner’s dynamic drum patterns, DOR have everything it takes to beat you senseless while you still yearn for more…

Illumni are a four piece band originating from the Sunbury. They have been making a name for ourselves playing around Melbourne, playing venues like the Espy, TOTE, Green Room, Greyhound Hotel and Pony to name a few, earning a reputation as quite a crowd puller and are now prime for the sell out. Their Influences range from 90’s Indie rock like Nirvana, Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins to old school punk and rock acts like Black Sabbath, the Ramones and AC/DC.

Illumni have recorded a four track EP in 2004 which sold out, and followed it up with a promo type, give-away single, New Heavy in 2005. www.illumni.net

Melbourne’s Hardrive Bluegrass Band has taken out the Bluegrass and Traditional Country Music Award 2006 at the Victorian and National Country Music Awards with their album “Lightning”, and the song “Mighty Dark for Me To Travel”.

Introducing Chris Jacobs on lead vocals and guitar, and Oliver Dear at 14 years old on the bluegrass mandolin, the band’s album ‘Lightning’ has won the award in the first year of their new lineup. It is the second award for Hardrive’s Lachlan Dear, at the age of 18, from the Victorian and National Country Music Awards, and for Nick Dear and Mick Harrison. The band won Album of the Year for their CD Henry Lawson’s Blues in 2003.

Lightning is an extraordinary album reflecting the band’s ever increasing talent, both instrumentals and vocals
shine on Lightning - the debut album for lead vocalist Chris Jacobs, who joined Hardrive in 2004, and for Oliver Dear who joined the band in 2005. The album features a capella gospel, hot instrumentals, and some remarkable original songs from the band and friends.

Featuring high-lonesome vocals and great instrumentals from a traditional line-up of banjo, fiddle/mandolin, guitar and double bass, their live performance and recent CD recording are true to the traditional form and reflects the nature of traditional bluegrass played live - as it was when Bill Monroe first began in the United States on radio programs broadcast from the Grand Old Opry and other live venues.

The band has recently been featured on the Bert Newton show on Channel 10, Nu-Country TV and the ABC television program Stateline. But you can enjoy ‘em free of charge @ The Greyhound from 5pm.

Offspring of the early 90’s, TOC has been inspired by bands such as Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. Also evident in the band’s sound is their passion for both trip hop and instrumental music, with key influences including Massive Attack and Mogwai. Together they’ve created an impressive catalogue of original eclectic songs. From accordian and mandolin, to hammond organ and groovying bass licks. Make no mistake, these guys put on a show that would make guys less than half Rilen’s age hang their heads in shame. Rilen, who has been described as Australia’s answer to Iggy Pop, says of The Love Addicts “they rock like shit, but with highs and lows. It’s soft and lazy and sleazy, but then it snaps out.”

The band released their 2nd album, Passion Boots & Bruises, earlier this year serving up more of the boozing, swampy blues rock that fans have come to love. Catch up with the Love Addicts at their fave venue - The Greyhound. www.ianrilen.com

Greyhound Hotel Gigs

1 Brighton Rd St Kilda.Ph: 9534 4189

Wed 30 November
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Sinatra’s Eyes, Turbines To Speed + King City Seven. 8pm, free.
After forming in March 2005 Sinatra’s Eyes we’re quick to get the ball rolling recording a 6 track demo the very next month. Sinatra’s Eyes took to the streets passing out demos to anyone who was interested in listening. After handing the demo to a number of venues the gigs started to come in, and once the crowds and bookers took one look at their electrifying live show, the gigs were coming thick and fast.

In the short 6 months since forming, Sinatra’s Eyes have developed a strong fan base of both overage and underage punters. With the passion these boys hold towards their music and towards entertaining a crowd they are destined to go places… fast. Sinatra’s Eyes is a name to watch out for in the very, near future. www.myspace.com/sinatraseyes www.purevolume.com/sinatraseyes

Turbines to Speed formed 2004 in Melbourne. Simon the drummer and Ben the guitarist started jamming together before the addition of Kyle on bass completed the hard rocking 3 piece. Their style of music is the timeless early 90s sound of the Seattle grunge movement and they have been compared to Nirvana cross Ratcat. www.myspace.com/turbinestospeed

Seven piece outfit The King City Seven have taken rock combined with fast-paced pop-punk, fused it with a diabolical horn section and have created a unique sound that is exciting, energetic and explosive - defining of their on (and off) stage antics. The band have been playing together for over 3 years and, over the last 18 months, have constructed their bridge into the music scene and matured into a band that not only entertains, but enthralls.

The last year has been hard work for the band; with non-stop live shows, song writing and the recording of their new EP, The King City Seven are continually stretching their limits and creating a fresh new sound and with the release of their new EP ‘Breathing down your neck’, are sure to blow you away. www.kingcityseven.com

Fri 2 December ROCKING GIG OF THE WEEK #1
Bandroom: The Detonators & Intoxica 8.30pm $10
Those Melbourne alternative legends Intoxica play so rarely these days you’d be a fool to pass this one up. Experience their unique blend of psychobilly, surf apocalypse, and relentless rock’n’roll presented in blistering live performance and you’ll understand how they came to influence and inspire so many of today’s “new rock” acts.

When Arthur left The Corpse Grinders in late 1986 George from The Olympic Sideburns joined up and the name was changed to Intoxica. That wasn’t the only change - The Corpse Grinders were a gloriously madcap psychobilly riot but Intoxica was free to add echoes of primal garage in The Sonics, the surf sounds of The Ventures, Eddie Bertrand and Dick Dale, the twang of the Buckaroos and the rave of Hasil Adkins. Since then the lineup has stayed true - Tony Shaw - singer, Phil Grinder - drums, ‘Teebs’ Pennington - bass, Nicky Del Rey - guitar, George - guitar.

Intoxica started gigging in 1987 and haven’t stopped. They’ve released three albums and five singles and featured on numereous compilations. They’ve opened for Deborah Harry, Dick Dale and The Stray Cats. They rock.

Since forming in mid 1997, Melbourne based original roots rockers The Detonators have released four albums. They have enhanced their live performance reputation by aggressive touring. Playing the Australian East Coast from far North Queensland to Hobart, across to South Australia, all the way to Perth and up through the red centre to Darwin. Fans from all the above cities will testify to this quartet’s original blend of door slammin’, top fuellin’ rubber burning jump rock blues.

The multi award winning Detonators have quickly earned a deserved reputation, as one of Australia’s most exciting, hard working, live kick-arse rockin’ roots bands. They are known locally as the high priests of roots rock ‘n’ roll. They can be heard on radio stations all around the country including the ABC and their videos have been shown many times on the ABC’S. Rage.

Comprising: - Rockbottom James Moloney (vocals, harmonica), Paulie “The Kid” Bignell (guitar), Eddie Fury (sticks & skins) and Doghouse Dave Philpots (bull fiddle bass).

They’re launching their debut self-titled EP with special guests Ben Mitchell and Pedro on Saturday afternoon, with a BBQ lunch also available. $10 buys you a snag, a beer and a copy of the EP - Bargain! or just come and watch for free…

The Vagrants’ sound is a blend of 70’s rock with a bit of a roots feel. They’ve been compared to Ben Harper, Black Crows, Baby Animals, Stray Cats, The Stones and Jack Johnson, which says a lot about how hard it is to categorise them. Whatever the classification, radio likes it with the band getting good airplay on RRR, PBS and SYN FM. www.vagrantmusic.com www.sonicbids.comvagrants

Ben Mitchell is a local singer/songwriter also getting radio play on 3PBS, 3RRR and Southern FM. After many years in the UK, Ben returned to Australia in 2004 and has since been building his audience of new fans and getting the attention of the local music industry. ‘The Stars Can See’ his latest offering is available at The Last Record Store, Smith Street, Collectors Corner, Swanston Walk and over the net at Longhaul Records. www.benmitchell.com

Wed 19 October
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising - Plug-in City, Glue + She’ll Be Apples. 8pm, free.

Plug-in City is a Melbourne five-piece, who play a bravura blend of the pique and the sweet. The band puts on a propulsive, irrepressible live show, which lobs between spiky rock and syrupy pop. Best taken with a tappin’ toe…

Glue is a three piece rock band experimenting with different styles and unpredictable changes within each song. Glue enjoys challenging the listener through aggressive noise scapes into melodic tones, taking them on a musical journey. Glues music is designed to challenge and encourage playing on a field of emotional tones and mess.

Girl fronted 3 piece She’ll Be Apples have bits of The Breeders, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, and The Go Go’s. Formed in October 04 around the songwriting idea’s of Fe Porter (guitar/vocals) She’ll Be Apples have been playing rooms around town, perfecting their unique style of rock. She’ll Be Apples’ recently recorded first demo got picked up by Half a Cow, who nominated it Demo of the Week in July 05 and has been branded “pop punk” by owner Nic Dalton.

The songs are well crafted catchy pop that intergrate the beats of the 60’s and girl rock of the eighties. Simple chord structure teamed with distorted bass and inviting lyric content have created music with unique character.

Thur 20 October
Bandroom: Shonkytonk, A Couple Of Stubbies Short Of A Six Pack (EP Launch), Steve Prictor & His Violent Moodswings, Entry $5, from 8.30pm.

A Couple of Stubbies Short Of A Six Pack are Shane ‘Shubox’ Jenkins (drums);Adrian Chynoweth (guitar);Sean D. Black (bass); george.e.bean (spoken word). The band play a loose ‘free-form’ blues-based rhythm with some guitar-licks thrown in to high-light the musical/spoken piece. Over the top of this george.e.bean lays down a spoken monotone line of words as ‘streams-of-un-consciousness.’ The words may be poetic social-commentary, socio-apolitical ramblings – or just plain-old mind-altering head-spaces!

It is not intended to be a form of soap-box polemic – but the pieces are meant to be whole - as question raising, thought provoking, heart pleasin, peace-love-and-understanding expressions of who we are…as humane beings. Mix this with Steve Prictor and his Violent Mood Swings, and Fred Negro and his merry band of Shonkytonks - and you have what only St Kilda can offer.

Fri 21 October
Bandroom: Twin Lizzy (Thin Lizzy), War Pigs (Ozzy Osbourne) + Stormbringer (Deep Purple) $10, 8.30pm

A tribute to 3 of the biggest names in rock - Thin Lizzy, Ozzy Osbourne + Deep Purple.

The War Pigs show is always better to be experienced than described. Utter madness, awesome power, total authenticity. With as many as twenty classic tracks to bludgeon the crowd with at any one time, no punter goes away unfulfilled. Expect the spirit of Ozzy to be projected in such a way that you’ll forget you’re still in your local.

With reviewers claiming that War Pigs are “better than the originals!”, all fans of classic metal owe it to themselves to experience just what it is like to get crazy with War Pigs.

In Feburary 2004 Lobby Loyde joins his Melbourne band. In July of 2004 Black Smith Hopkins Started work on his new album with Lobby Loyde & Les Stacpool on Guitars and the Farr brothers Sam on bass & Dorian on Drums respectively. Black Smith Hopkins Continues to prove he is Australia’s Most Original Blues Rock talent.

With the voices of homesick angels and repartee sharper than the blade of the Grim Reaper’s new Flymo, The Prayerbabies welcome all attempts to pigoeon-hole them.

Spreading lemon-butter harmonies over toasted guitars, with double choc bass and drums on the side, the magnificent four; Ian Birdwheel-Frights, Paul Dalby, Pat Moore & Nicholas Thorpe concoct a heady brew of country, blues and gospel, washed down with a snifter of latin, disco, rock, pop and whatever else happends to be on offer at the time.

Bandroom: The Last Five Minutes, Dallas Cosmos & The Wonderfulls + The Adventures Of…
Entry $5, 8.30pm

With a sound that’s been described as ‘the bastard son of Wilco, Splitz Enz and The Who’ the The Last Five Minutes blend elements of 60’s classic pop and psychedelia, 80’s indie, folk and a fistful of other influences into a unique collection of songs ranging from catchy pop to dark melodrama to ‘perfectly aged Camenbert’. We’ll leave you to work that out for yourselves…

Frost can be appreciated by anyone with an ear for exuberant playing in the classic pop mould…” Danny Jumpertz – SBS Whatever Music Producer

One day a group of guys from Melbourne fell into a washing machine, tumbled around for a while and then emerged - clean and sparkling with instruments in their hands. That band was Enoautomatic. Public Bar: The Gladeyes (NZ)

The Gladeyes are an independent band from Dunedin, New Zealand. Their debut EP What To Do? was released in Sept 03 through their label, ELP Records.

The Gladeyes spent most of ‘04 writing new material while drummer Stu Harwood represented the band in Europe, organising contacts and touring potential. A national tour in 2005 supported the What To Do? video release. The Gladeyes have begun work on their first full-length album, which they plan to release in November this year followed by a trip to London and Europe in December to promote the record.

The Gladeyes are partway through their first Australasian tour. Guitarist Chris Keogh describes their music as “a twisted, postmodern attempt at making light of pop music, which is only possible when you live at the very bottom of the world.” But don’t listen to him, he reads too much, think of it as hyper active pop to dance to. www.freewebs.com/thegladeyes

Fri 7 October
Bandroom: Damsel, The Mystaken + Remedy. $6, 8.30pm

The MYSTAKEN are Sally Bailey Guitar/Voc (Small Handgun), Maria Sokratis Bass/Vocals (Boyettes & Eye Creatures –Melb), Kati Bishop Drums (Oiska) & Andrew Horne Guitar.

These kids know how to rock. In a world where chicks in bands (some of ‘em anyway) are honoured for incompetence and egos are larger than balloons in the Macy’s Parade, here’s some kids who don’t give a fuck about anything but the rock. Formed in ‘99, The Mystaken’s 1st release Life’s Never Been So Real out on Rock Against Bullshit has been a long time coming. After slogging it out and playing countless gigs this has been worth the wait.
The band has played with international acts including The Detroit Cobras, The Bangs, 5678’s, Super Snazz, Dr Explosion and also featured on the Live and Local stage at the last Livid festival in 2003. They have also supported an array of dazzling (for want of a better word) local talent including Rocket Science, The Drones, Neon, The Meanies, The Casanovas, Powdermonkeys, Spencer P Jones and many more. Performing a number of live to air shows on Melbourne’s 3PBS and 3CR, they have cultivated a loyal following of anyone who listens.

The Mystaken have appeared on a number of compilations including The Lobotomizer Tapes (3PBS Fave Bands), Wild About You (Australian bands paying tribute to their fave 60’s garage hits) and have released a 7inch single through Corduroy Records titled “Don’t Fuck Wiv Me”. In the near future the band will leave on a jet plane for Europe where interest sparked by the debut single in 2000 has yet to fizzle out and will burn faster and harder as soon as the Europeans get a load of the latest release. www.themystaken.com

Sat 8 October
Public Bar: The Dice Age. Free 5pm.

Cabarock band The Dice Age have re-constructed their live show to perform a club show at the Greyhound. The show will see front man Tim Rolfe (Exotics) pulling on 2 extra strings to take total artistic control as guitar slinger as well as lead singer. The rhythm section will be complemented by local session hotshot Matt Duffy on bass (The Seedy Three).

” Taking on guitar duties is a bit like arming a child to fight a civil war ” said Rolfe, ” It’s not your first choice , but it can be quite effective, especially if you know the territory. ”
The Dice Age also welcome a new Diva of Dice, Chloe Wilson (Mo Tunes) who has temporarily retired from churning out Motown hits to forge a career in Cabarock. The Dice Age roadtest the new dance steps and the Feng Shui on stage in the Public Bar of the Greyhound.

Bandroom: The Drag Show. $8, 8pm.

Sun 9 October THE BEST SUNDAY IN TOWN!
Public Bar: COUNTRY CAPERS with The Vagrants. 5pm, free.

Getting compared to Ben Harper, Black Crows, The Allman Brothers, Baby Animals, The Stones and Jack Johnson says a lot about how the music that The Vagrants deliver, and it’s been going down a treat with Melbourne punters at various venues around town.

The Vagrants features James Spitfire on guitar, Renate Ludwig on voice, Steve Cookie Iorio on lead guitar, Brett Spicer on drums and new kid Ollie Davey on bass.

The Vagrants are currently working on their debut album, due for release very soon. The album is being mixed by American ex-patriate Rob Feaster, who has worked with the likes of Jack Johnson, Bush, No Doubt, Bruce Springsteen + Whitney Houston - to name just a few.

Needless to say, The Vagrants are very excited to have him on board, and the recording is going exceptionally well. Keep an eye out for more info in the coming weeks. www.vagrantmusic.com

Marlise, Shayne and Dion of REPLICA started writing together in 2000. Since then they have notched up an impressive number of gigs and fans. Along the way Replica have worked with a group of people who believe in their talent. Tony Mantz, who loves the bands “solid songs”, mastered their debut EP, bruised, at Sing Sing.

They caught the eye of Alan A Griffith, of LA based UEG (home to Nickleback), who contacted them after hearing a four track demo. Alan continues to give Replica advice and guidance in their musical career. They are melodic, powerful and edgy. www.replica.net.au
Perfect Sin are a band made up of 4 members who are influenced by rockabilly, psychobilly, punk and rock n roll. Their aim is to introduce a new sound but keep the old feel of these dying arts.

Thur 1 September
Public Bar: The Canteloupes. 9.30pm free.
Groovy jazz, funk and soul. Perfect to move to, or just to chill out, sit back and listen to. The Cantaloupes play upbeat sounds from the lounge. An instrumental group led by drummer Paul Richards, The Cantaloupes delve into the 70’s vault of cool - funky grooves and bubbling melodies.

Bandroom: Rincon, Generator + TBA. $5 8.30pm
“Rincon play a hotpotch of melodies intertwined with punchy in your face rhythms and beats.” - Beat Magazine

Rincon’s high energy stage show combined with their strong musicianship has earned them headline status at many venues in the last 4 years. Their sound has been described as a mix of sevendust, Pearl Jam, Hoobastank and Perfect Circle. Releasing their debut ep in May of this year, the band are looking forward to a busy 2006.

Generator was formed in 2001 by Gus Gaiewski (Guitars) and Scott McKenzie (Vocals). The initial 2 years had been spent writing and recording demos and recruting band members that would suit the bands direction, with Ian Ashley (Bass) joining the band in 2003 and their latest member joining the fold is Luke on (Drums).

Generator’s sound could be described as Alice in Chains meets Drowning Pool with a hint of Metallica - a bit of a mix, but they sound very impressive. 2004 was spent recording a new demo and finding a suitable drummer, with a couple of gigs in between. 2005 is panning out to be a very eventfull and exciting year with quite a few gigs and the recording of their debut album. Generator is certainly a new band to watch out for. www.generatorband.com

Fri 2 September
Bandroom: Lacuna EP Launch with Sunny Hawkins + Jessica Parncutt $7 8.30pm
Lacuna have come from nowhere and have started appearing and being talked about everywhere. This four-piece band has blended their individual musical influences to produce a sound that is unique incorporating an acoustic groove with rock vibe and dreamscape.

Lacunas’ music can find a place with everyone. The live shows captivate the crowd, drawing people on to the dance floor while leaving others in a state of absorption, and although it’s quite hard to put a finger down on the Lacuna style; this intangible quality is part of their great strength.

Recently, they have finished recording their much anticipated first EP titled ‘Fate’ at 001 Studios under the wing of renowned engineer Kalju Tonuma, who helped refine the sound that resides in the essence of Lacuna .

People remember and put value on those who try to make a difference - Lacuna has a value that is memorable..with support from Sunny Hawkins + Jessica Parncutt.

Public Bar: Ian Rilen & The Love Addicts. Free 9.30pm.
Ian Rilen would have achieved lasting notoriety if his only claim to fame was as the founding songwriter for Rose Tattoo who left because the band’s choice of music wasn’t hard enough. Then he had to go and form X and unleash a strain of high-energy music so visceral and basic that it almost defies description. These days, Rilen’s main effort is with The Love Addicts, who are bringing their low-down dirty rock n roll that they do so well to the ‘hound’s public bar.

Bandroom: Santacruz, Haunted Craft + Artinem. Free 8pm.
Jager Uprising.

SANTACRUZ a 4-piece local outfit, describe their sound as fresh, innovative pop/rock. They use sequencing, meshed into their large live band sound, and up to four part vocal harmonies.
Comprised of Brandon Burns - lead vocals; TJ Regan - guitars, vocals , sampling, sequencing; Ryan Koster - bass, vocals and John Gosstray - drums, these four musicians bring a vast array of musical influences, along with their own individual style to create a new sound in pop rock. All four members are active songwriters who produce and develop new material on a regular basis.

HAUNTED CRAFT are a sexy power pop band. Their music features catchy, melodic tunes combining a strong 80’s influence with big heavy beats, quirky keyboard lines, and a fresh unique male vocal.

Amongst all the rock revival bands around, HAUNTED CRAFT’s music appears like a ray of sunshine. The songs are energetic, intoxicating, sometimes weird, yet undeniably happy!

ARTINEM, three young guys that love music above all else, leaving politics to the big boys and here to have fun. These guys grew up in a mosh-pit, playing hard hitting riffs, tight grooves, big fills, phat bass and stick tricks with lyrics that demand your attention. They shred it up like cheese on the face of an old man on his death bed, as his final wish was to be cooked like a 5 buk BBQ chicken and mushroom pizza. www.artinem.live.com.au

They recorded their first EP, ‘Where’s Robbie?’ in 2005 and have recently recorded a fast paced cover of the Aussie smash hit ‘Dumb Things’ by Paul Kelly.

Hailing from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, The Record Boys have been gigging for over two years, spreading their version of rocknroll. Their interesting antics on stage, which incidentally is not usually suitable for young eyes (or the faint hearted for that matter), always make them an extremely entertaining band to see live.

The Record Boys have three EPs out, which you can pick up for free at any of their live gigs and even a Record Boys Movie which consists of footage taken from live shows and road tours throughout the RBs illustrious career.

Fri 26 August
Bandroom: Impossible Cinema, Mondo Cane, Rivken & Wireless $7 8.30pm
Mondo Cane formed in 2002, the bands original members; Steve McPherson - Guitar & Vocals, Matt Panag - Keyboards & Vocals and Matt Vance - Drums & Backing Vocals were bound together and inspired by a lack of truly inspiring music. They spent the next 18 months honing an odd blend of blues, punk, jazz and rock in intimate venues around melbourne.

In Feb 04, the band succumbed to peer pressure and decided to add bass to the line-up enlisting the services of Aidan O’Neill (the Knives of Neptune). Since then the band has released a 2 track single featuring the tracks “New Tax” and “Rapture/Delight” and played countless gigs around Melbourne.

So far in 2005 the band has been playing locally and honing a set of songs set to be released on two forthcoming EP’s, which are slated for a late 2005 release date. The band is currently in the studio demoing songs for the first of the two EP’s which is currently existing under the working title of “Nothing’s Wrong”.

Over the past year and a half Melbourne rock act Rivken have built up a legion of dedicated fans that bask in the glory of this bands amazing take on modern rock. Describing their sound simply as “Rocky, Loud, Nice” the band released a demo in early 2004 featuring the track “Soma” which received airplay on Triple J and Triple R and have just recently in July 2005 released their self titled debut EP. The EP contains 4 well crafted, epic, melodic rock songs that will do nothing to defuse the hype that surrounds this up and coming band. Check them out.

Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Freestate, Fingerprint Resistant + Deflekt. Free 8pm.
FREESTATE consider their music to be strong melodic harmonies over heavy grooves… or in short Dynamic Rock. Inspiration is derived from many sources: movies, books, relationships and everyday occurrences. Self analysis and exploration of the human psyche also inspire, particularly the lyrical content of artists such as Faith No More, Incubus, Deftones,Jeff Buckley, Sade, Depeche Mode, Michelle N’dege Ochello, Metallica, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Credence Clearwater Revival, Santana, The Eagles, Wagner…www.freestate.com.au

“FINGERPRINT RESISTANT would be one of the top 3 live acts in Australia!” – Drum Media

Forming in late 2003 FINGERPRINT RESISTANT have made waves across NSW with their high-energy live shows. This original three-piece group make no apologies for their attention grabbing performances. “..This band WILL have a cult following!” – wollongongmusicscene.com

Having only played a little over a dozen or so shows around Sydney and Wollongong, Fingerprint Resistant had sold their entire first pressing of their Debut EP “Everything I know”. In three months. With no release to retail!

With very little effort Fingerprint Resistant have already created a following that would take any normal act 12 months and 80 odd shows to do. But they do not intend on stopping there. With the new EP, 2005 will be they year that will be remembered as the year everyone else in Australia heard and lusted over these three young men.

DEFLEKT formed as an acoustic trio a few years back, writing original songs for about six months and recording a demo. Acoustic songs quickly became boring and they started jammin with a drummer (Dave) and writing some alternative/rock/heavy rock songs.

This was all working well, gigging and writing for a while. They had some great shows such as playing at Rod Laver Arena as part of The State School Spectacular, The National Theatre as part of Kool Skools, where they received awards for Best Acoustic Song and Best Guitarist.

DEFLEKT went through a few twists and turns when Dave decided to leave the band. This only made the band stronger and more passionate when Dave’s older brother James joined the band. James added a whole new dimension to DEFLEKT, who began writing new material. They are currently in the process of recording/mixing a few tracks.

Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, James Brown, Herbie Hancock and other great artists from the era can be found in the set list.

Bandroom: The Curious Few, Lady Peroxide + Bravado $5, 8.30pm.

Delivering their all-original rock performance with blistering energy and pure passion, The Curious Few are steadily gaining notoriety around Melbourne and beyond as being a tight-knit group that is doggedly true to their creative vision.
With a unique style that is described by fans and foes alike as being unashamedly raw and sometimes a little confronting, The Curious Few proudly take their inspiration from their heroes of the 80s Australian garage rock scene; including The Lime Spiders, The Eastern Dark, The Beasts of Bourbon, The New Christs and The Scientists.

Embarking on a narrative journey of forbidden love, betrayal, rage, prison and even a monkey, the songs reveal an immediate urge to communicate basic human emotion with unpretentious conviction. Consistently capturing audiences with their lively and commanding presence, The Curious Few stake an ambitious claim on the hearts and souls of Melbourne’s live music scene.

Sat 20 August
Public Bar: Jeff Jenkins + The Late Starters. Free 9.30pm.
Jeff Jenkins is an exciting new Australian singer/songwriter. Two years ago Jeff changed direction from his career as a singer/performer in professional music theatre. He picked up an old Maton guitar and started writing songs for the first time in his life.

Jeff was joined by David Johnston, Mick Wenhuda and Kim Farrell, three mature musicians with decades of experience in many fields of music. Together they shaped and honed, and ultimately recorded and performed, selections from a list of 50 or more.

Jeff’s unique and contemporary compositions are an unmistakably Australian blend of rootsy folk, country, pop and rock. They’re for people who enjoy listening…enjoy dancing..enjoy singing along.

Late Starters? An obvious reference to Jeff’s new found songwriting talent, but also to the band’s commitment to this new music, performed with energy usually seen in players half their ages.

In its present incarnation, Honey Rice Childe has been cooking along for 2 years, drawing on a broad range of experience and styles. Singer songwriter Stacy Kilpatrick springs from a solid background of early American string band music (precursor to American Bluegrass.)

An interesting launching pad for a country-blues band which incorporates some of these very early fiddle/mandolin tunes into a modern country-blues background. If ya like house rockin countrified blues with just dash of hokey hillbilly then this is the band for you.
So come on all you twisters …let’s boogie!!!

The very sensational rhythm section is the ubiquitous Lawrence Nulty (current -The Sparnetts, Golden Guitar winners, Tamworth 2000) on drums, Ian Hill (ex-Olympic Sideburns, Bo-Weevils and Sunset Strip) on bass, lead guitar is Tristan Varga-Miller (ex-Fuck Fucks) and of course Stacy Kilpatrick (ex Flying Tongue Kiss and Lost Cattle) on lead vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin and fiddle.

Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Template, Gold Mice (NSW) + Nexusphere. Free 8pm.

Melbourne-based TEMPLATE is “Australia’s most exciting and revered progressive rock band.” Formed in late ‘01 by Michael Mills, Jarrod Ross and Peter Marin, the band were praised by radio stations and press alike, not to mention their ever-expanding fanbase (which is now worldwide).

Perhaps out of pure demand, TEMPLATE recorded and released, completely and utterly independently, their debut album in 2003. By the end of that year, the first pressing of 500 had sold out, primarily through gigs and indie record stores. Online, word about the band spread like wildfire, and they not only scored airplay on respectable homeland stations MMM, PBSFM and Triple J, but also right around the world, including Germany and the U.S.
In the press, Template have received rave reviews in local street magazines such as Beat, Inpress, Forte and X-Press magazine, as well as magazines such as DrumScene and Canada’s Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles. At time of writing, Template plan to record a follow-up to their phenomenal debut toward the end of 2005. A DVD is also planned, featuring studio clips and live performances. www.templatemusic.com

We reckon you should come and see if they’re as good as they think. Also on the bill are Gold Mice and Nexusphere. 8pm, free entry.

They maintain their ever-maturing growth by constantly seeking to up the ante with each song, turning their live set into a fully-fledged , electrified war zone of anthems, solos, soul-full bridges, crowd-pleasing melodies and complete jump the f**k up carnage. Also on the bill are Ordain and Tang. $5, 8.30pm.

Fri 12 August GREYHOUND GIG OF THE WEEK!!
Bandroom: Womnal, Ian Rilen & The Love Addicts + Backbone. $5, 8.30pm

Such diverse genres as blues, punk rock, West African folk, classical to down right dirty Rock N Roll combine to form the musical style of WOMNAL. Since forming in St Kilda in 1993, the band has evolved through many atypical structures (once described as a medieval punk rock orchestra) up to its current 6-piece lineup.

A twin drum attack with interweaving bass and guitar form a powerful rhythm section, which is offset by the assorted melodies of piano/organ and flute. Live performances regularly incorporate dancing and other assorted stage theatrics combined with a bizarre sense of humour that compliments the sounds of this unusual, yet damn fine band.

Keeping it neighbourly, St Kilda stalwarts Ian Rilen + The Love Addicts and Backbone are guests for the night. This will be GOOD!

WRESTLING GRUDGE MATCH OF THE YEAR
MR BIG vs MR DAMAGE
Who will prevail? Who will wipe the floor with whom?
Find out - Fri 24th June

——————————————————————————–

Wed 22 June
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Cloud City, Vocoder + Vespertine. 8pm free.

For three years CLOUD CITY has been developing a distinctive sound, instantly recognisable to the music fan. This strongly bonded quartet combines a tapestry of strong melodies, producing rock based grooves. Cloud City plan to see out 05 with more shows, both here and interstate, and plans to release an EP.

VOCODER is a six-legged “post-punk & roll” beat-combo from Wellington, Aotearoa.
The word “energy” comes up a lot in their reviews and they have a sound that has been variously described as “surf-inspired alt rock with huge lashings of eighties new-wave pop”, “post-punk” and “wall-of-sound pop”.

Vocoder’s latest release is The Collapsed Stars EP on Melbourne’s Popboomerang Records. The five-track EP features both Collapsed Stars and Falko, along with Count To Six which has just had an animated video released for it and a cover of the Kinks’ obscurity This Is Where I Belong. http://www.vocoder.co.nz/

Formed in 2000 on the Mornington Peninsula, VESPERTINE is infused with the diverse influences of its individual members, rendering it capable of anything from blistering rock and jarring dissonance to dream-like mellow moments of ethereal beauty.

The end result is music immediate and accessible yet endowed with a depth seldom found in today’s climate of disposability. http://vespertineband.tripod.com

Thur 23 June
Public Bar: The Vagrants. 9.30pm free.

James Spitfire is the rhythm of The Vagrants. Renate Ludwig is the voice. Steve Cookie Iorio is lead guitarist and main songwriter. Gentleman Jim Rintoul on bass is the lead foot on the gas pedal. Peter G is the primal beat of The Vagrants.

The Vagrants got their name from the obvious - life on the road with no home. The good times and the bad give their music its diversity, raw energy, edge and sweet tones. Happier on the road than at home, they have been gigging constantly in separate projects and have come together as on on stage to launch The Vagrants.

Getting compared to Ben Harper, Black Crows, The Allman Brothers, Baby Animals, The Stones and Jack Johnson says a lot about how hard it is to categorize the music.

Bandroom: Quiet The Few, The Dreamers + Into The Red. $4, 8.30pm.

Quiet the Few a 4 piece band with intentions of blowing your mind and breaking your heart. A band that seeks out a certain type of emotional intensity usually reserved for bad break-ups, transcendental outpourings of creative genius and Radiohead songs.

Taking stock of the lessons offered by artists like The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Deathcab for Cutie, Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith, At the Drive-In and John Fruciante, the boys have managed to distil elements of all of these, yet has a genuine level of originality.

Quiet the Few have generated quite a bit of hype about their energetic yet tight stage show and impressive presence. Their basic manifesto is ‘If we can quiet the few with something profound, emotive and distinctly ours then we will be satisfied.’ But don’t expect it to stop there, this is definitely something big.

The Dreamers will unleash their sonic assault upon The Greyhound on Thursday 23rd June. The band has been in the studio laying down tracks for their first EP which should see a release August ‘05.

Sat 25 June
Public Bar: The Budgie Smugglers. Free 9.30pm.

They play songs by artists such as; Link Wray, Dick Dale, The Who and Chet Atkins. Their songs include: “Third Stone From The Sun” and “Driving South” both by Jimi Hendrix. They also do Stevie Ray Vaugn’s instrumental version of “Little Wing”. Other songs include “Steppin’ Out” by Freddie King and for a bit of humour, Chet Atkins’ versions of “Mr. Sandman” and “Yaketty Axe”, which they refer to affectionately as “The Benny Hill Theme Song”.

The Budgie Smugglers goal is to prove that instrumental music can be entertaining. They feel that it is not really necessary to justify themselves by including a vocalist. As a result, their repertoire consists of obscure songs that are a mixture of surf instrumental, hard rock, rockabilly, jazz, blues and country. Try the Budgie Smugglers on for size - you’ll find them snug - but good.

SPYHUNTER’s songs showcase the band’s ability to mix many styles in an effort to create one new and original sound. Combining elements of punk and rock and hard.core whilst still retaining their pop sensibilities, SPYHUNTER can appeal to many audiences.

AMBASSADOR 77 have bought their thumping live show to audiences far and wide, performing regularly since 2002 around Melbourne and Sydney. The band released their debut EP “Transaction Approved” in March 2003. The disc featured 4 punchy rock tracks and was produced by David Carr (Antiskeptic). Launch of Sunday Winter Warmers (inc comedy) - June 19

Wed 8 June
Public Bar: Pool Comp.

Bandroom: Jager Uprising w The Stars, Liquid X + The Chuffs. 8pm free.

With more grunt than a pig farm and more balls than day three at Wimbledon, THE STARS have just bought their first tram ticket out of Melbourne’s leafy South East.

Emerging from the studio with We’re All In The Gutter But Some Of Us Are Looking At….., the boys have tapped a semi-precious seam of rock. Needless to say, they’re just about as happy as a Mistress with a whip. And just who wouldn’t be if they sounded like The Buzzcocks on a date with Van Halen at a pizza joint on Centre Road?

Bass Man Drucifer can barely believe how juicy he sounds. “I feel like I’m diagonally parked in a parallel universe,” he says, taking pause to chamois his Datsun 120 Y. Ask around, THE STARS are the shizzle. Take a tour of their new EP “We’re All in the Gutter, But Some of Us Are Looking At … The Stars for absolute proof. www.thestars.com.au

LIQUID X plays original alternative/heavy tunes which are melodic and catchy. Influences range from 80’s rock and metal, 90’s mainstream alternative, and the recently popular ‘heavy groove’ genre.

Liquid X aims to maintain originality, not duplication; to establish a sound, not chase one. They strive to achieve a tight, solid, varietal sound. The musical influences of all liquidxians provides the style with a chunky edge, contrasted by clean, melodic vocals, crisp bass and strong, decorative percussion.

The band has a good formula and thrive on live performance. There’s no crappy gimmicks or smashing of guitars - it’s all about fun, energy and silly song names. Try ‘Nanna’s Crack’, ‘Tin Undies’ and ‘Romper Room’ out for size. http://www.geocities.com/liquidxmusic
THE CHUFFS are described as being dirty, loud and rough, but ready. Sporting their own brand of energetically charged song craft, they cite influences such as Black Sabbath, The Celibate Rifles, Kyuss and X .

Formerly known as ‘YOB”, they’ve been demonstrating their strengths as an energetic live act since December 2003 by exciting audiences at Indyfest, Sydney Harbour’s Rocks Rhythm Boat and the Schmooze Festival.

THE CHUFFS debut EP ‘The Cleancut Young Go Getters Go to Hell’ is scheduled for release in the first half of 2005, label/distributor pending. A mastered copy is currently available as a demonstration of their sound. www.chuffland.com

Thur 9 June
Public Bar: The Vagrants. 9.30pm free.

James Spitfire is the throbbing rhythm of The Vagrants. The big engine of the locomotive train that burns into your chest and gets you fired up. The only thing tender about James is his age, 22.

Renate Ludwig is the voice that is ringing in your ears as you leave. She has been up front of many bands, and their is no doubt about who is in the spotlight on stage. The biggest thing about Renate is her voice - her frame is tiny - leaving people wondering where the power is coming from.

Steve Cookie Iorio grew up in New York with no mother - leaving a hard edge on Cookie. The youngest of 5, he quickly learnt to fend for himself. Steve is the lead guitarist and main songwriter for the band.

Peter G from WA on drums is the primal beat of The Vagrants. Mr G has a chequered past of funk, jazz and heavy metal, but he always gives his drums a hiding.

Gentleman Jim Rintoul on bass is the lead foot on the gas pedal. The van lurches forward as Jimbo revs up the band another gear. Well educated in life on the road, Jim knows the surf breaks and the beat breaks. His calm influence keeps the ohms flowing.

Bandroom: The Beings, Clinkerfield + Bright Colours Collide. Free 8.30pm.

The Beings www.thebeings.com
Forming in 1997, The Beings have used Melbourne pubs as an introduction to the Australian music scene. Using influences ranging from Nina Simone & The Shadows to Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, The Roots and heavier artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins and The Deftones, the Beings have been able to promote a new sound in the Australian music scene.

Keep listening out to JJJ, PBS and RRR during their indie artists shows.

Clinkerfield - Think of Pavement trying to molest Nick Drake, them being caught by Led Zeppelin who tells Will Oldham about it, who blocks his ears with a scarf and sticks his finger up Jeff Buckley’s bum. A wannabe William Blake writes the lyrics and drinks like Dylan Thomas for inspiration. All the while Iggy & the Stooges stand by with arms folded wondering who these pansies Belle & Sebastian are, and Coltrane and Miles get flustered in a “What is Jazz?” discussion with an obstinate Burt Bacharach. This is maybe what Clinkerfield sound like. Or not. www.clinkerfield.com

First up is Bright Colours Collide.

Fri 10 June
Bandroom: La Femme, Professional Murder Victims + The Budget Escorts. $8, 9pm.

Fed up with bullshit being passed off as entertainment, La Femme was formed in 1977 by ex-sharpies and proceeded to break all standards in the Australian music scene. In 1978 they became the first unsigned band to appear on ‘Countdown’. Then again a fortnight later, by popular demand with “Wanna Be Your Man” The “B” side to the banned “Chelsea Kids”-Australia’s 1st independent No.1 single in Europe, leading to a major deal, an album and other singles, breaking open the popscene for punk/alternative bands.

Attacking the “innercity/suburban barrier”, winning audiences and even the critics with explosive live shows, La Femme, after a brief affair offending T.V and ‘radio staff of the day’, turned their backs on all media and toured continuously for years - with everyone from The Vapours to The Ramones-returning to their St.Kilda roots, 1981’s “La Femme-Ballroom Live”-their 2nd album was filmed live and shown on ‘Nightmoves’ as a “new find”, their farewell joke to an industry, they laughed with and at!

Fed up with bullshit being passed off by the media as entertainment - La Femme was reformed.

Fabulous news for rock dogs and punk rats - the world premiere of the new line up of Professional Murder Victims - presenting their own unique brand of hard rockin’ old school punk rock party favourites (think The Stooges, Ramones, Public Image, Motorhead) and some of their own original stuff in a similarly diseased vein.

Featuring new vocalist Ashton Three (formerly of Parts Unknown), even newer bass player Carl Four (Ape Is ApeP, slightly less new but nonetheless vital is drummer Steve One and lastly guitarist Feedback Jack (Shower Scene From Psycho / Tombstone Hands/ The Unthinkable).

So come on down and see how its done right - good old fashioned punk rock like yer mutha used to pogo to! First up on the night is The Budget Escorts.

Public Bar: The Maryhillbillys. 4pm, free.

Maryhill, Scotland, 1963, a Mr and Mrs Richardson gave birth to a bouncing 26 pound boy, named him Scott, and decided it would be best for everyone if they popped him off to a different hemisphere ASAP. Due to his meandering ways, Scott Richardson never found him self in St Kilda till 2002, whence he popped down the local boozer and signed up the first 5 reprobates who walked through the door, and convinced them to join him on his quest for good time country music that was a treat for citizens to drink and dance to.
The Maryhillbillys were formed featuring members of Sunshine Harvester, The Fuck Fucks, The Love Addicts and the Violent Mood Swings…strangers to country music but no strangers to the limelight. “Meet” The Maryhillbillys is about to be launched in the northern parts of the world to critical acclaim and high rotation (just after the shipping news) on the BBC.

2005 sees the band preparing for their November European tour by playing some small but fun loving venues around Melbourne. Take the chance to catch up with them - there are 6 guys in the band so there’s sure to be at least one member you’ll want to fight and or root.

——————————————————————————–

Wed 18 May
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Collusion, Bravado + In The City. 8pm free.

Collusion All you need to know is that it could be the best 45 minutes of you’re life! Melbourne’s rock n’ roll indie pop kids are here to aid the revolution of live music. Imagine the bastard love child of The Libertines, Rolling Stones, Oasis and Jebediah, producing some of the catchiest rock n’roll tunes you’ll ever hear. Get out and see Collusion, you will enjoy this, and that’s all you need to know!

The band is Bravado. Ex-punk-rockers who have taken on a much more sophisticated sound.

Focused attitude, strong Punk-rock ethics and a somewhat disturbing sense of humour. This is Bravado.

Formed in late 2003 after a year with no vocalist, IN THE CITY had already developed into a creative, original and dedicated band. The existing 3 piece of Chris Plumridge (Guitar, Keys & Vocals), Cam Phillips (Bass) & Christian Fish (drums), was already a well oiled instrumental machine, and after the introduction of Pete Talbot (Lead Vocals), the line up was complete.

With each member bringing a completely different taste in music to the table, the sound that was fused as a result, is something specifically hard to label (sound or genre wise). Murmurs of Radiohead, MUSE, Faith No More, The Music, QOTSA, The Doors, The Killers, Coldplay and even David Bowie, have circulated after every gig, with people trying to put a finger on the sound that IN THE CITY produce. www.inthecity.com.au

Public Bar: Bag O Nails. 9.30pm free.

Bag O’Nails takes its name from a London Club, where Hendrix frequented and Paul met Linda. Bag O’Nails plays the type of rock inspired by the great Blues/Rock crossover bands such as Hendrix, Cream, Zep and AC/DC to name a few. If you like your Blues heavily doused in downright dirty Rock N Roll, as you do - catch Bag O’Nails.

Bandroom: The Seedy Three + The Twits. $4, 8.30pm.
They’re the funniest fast, rockin, punk crew with a touch of country and the reddest long-johns in the world….Since their incarnation in 2003, The Seedy Three have been wowing audiences with their dynamic hyper-paced collection of tunes, matched only by their remarkable stage presence!

Notorious in Melbourne town for their mad musical caperings, such as their 30 minute blues-punk-thrash rendition of the entire ‘Purple Rain’ album and their wonderfully fitting annual tribute to Johnny Cash. These boys are renowned for pounding out pure adrenalin fueled mayhem. Their sets are wholly unique in that they attract many people of different styles of music together… The Seedy Three is just about having fun!

“I can’t insist enough on going to see these guys…. as they are indeed seedy and very f***ing cool!” - -BeMyEx Magazine Melbourne

“…their rocking live show and kicking tunes giving them an unfair advantage over most other bands, ever!” -Inpress magazine Melbourne

Check out their website: www.theseedythree.com

The Twits, fronted by Fred Negro, deliver raucous, rollicking rock, filled with wildly buzzing guitars, full tilt rhythms and a pisstake attitude - like it or loathe it - they’ll guarantee a reaction, maybe even a rash!

Bandroom: Dextracardia, Pyramid + Cortez 8.30pm $6.
Dextrocardia : A rare condition where the heart is reversed and is the right side of the chest rather than in its normal location on the left. This is true anatomic reversal and occurs equally in males and females.

This Melbourne based outfit is a rock chameleon with 4 individual song writing members, all related and was formed in June ’04. Dextrocardia bring their own style of rock to the table and as an individual characteristic fuse many influences into their dirty, sleazy, happy melodic interpretation of rock.

Dextrocardia are: Chris Townsend – Guitars, vocals + dextrocardia; Keith Townsend – Guitars, vocals; Melissa Kenna – Bass & Nick Lolatgis – Drums, vocals, art. After just 7 months the foundations within the band are sound.

Dextrocardia has played its’ first batch of gigs at the Gershwin room, Revolver w/ template and the Public bar w/ mushroom giant. The Hybrid of influences and musical styles Dextrocardia explore ensures the longevity of the band and a continuous song writing stream.

Cortez is a Melbourne based three piece rock band that started back in September 2002. Cortez deliver a style of rock music that is fused by a diverse range of influences culminating in their hypnotic smouldering rock.

Press Release

Wed 27 Apr
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Set Fire, Menace + Starvation Army. 8pm free.
SET FIRE is a creative three-piece hard rock group who are sick of electro beatniks and tired of retro rock and roll! SET FIRE combines heavy grooves, tense vocals, and melodic soundscapes with big drums.

Kent and Ben met in high school and enjoyed listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers and got hooked on Jane’s Addiction. Sam, a few years above the boys took up drums and created a storm. Over the years they have performed in various groups together, damaging their hearing with a Three Musketeers vibe.

Formation of SET FIRE was mid-2004 and with hefty rehearsals plus mind over matter performance enhancing techniques the band has realized a large chunk of it’s potential. Collectively influenced by a diverse range of groups such as: Tool, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, and Jane’s Addiction - SET FIRE is willing to perform during the vicious storm. In short, you can’t go wrong! www.setfire.com.au

With an average age of only 15, MENACE play way beyond their years and not only have pro equipment but play and sound like seasoned professionals. Formed in Sept 2003, they mastered a repertoire consisting of hits by their favourite bands like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Muse, The Darkness, Rage Against The Machine, Aerosmith and Guns’n’Roses to name but a few. All the while writing their own originals.

With a determination and drive to become popular recording artists, they entered the recording studio in Sep ’04 with Ricki Rae (Christine Anu) & Jason Singh (Taxiride) for their 1st demo…..and what a result!!

Having cut their teeth at Bondy’s Barn, they have since performed at Federation Square during the World Rugby Finals, The Depot on several occasions, The Venue, Rush Bar, Club Evolution and were filmed live and interviewed by Asylum TV/C31 which was also shown on cable in New York. The video of their 1st demo was also screened on Asylum TV in Feb ’05.

In Sep ’04 they came 2nd of 18 bands (naturally all much older) playing originals in the FreeZa (Muso Network) band comp final at The Venue and now look forward to more recording with their prize. They were also guest programmers in a fun packed 2hr radio broadcast on 3SER 97.7FM in Sep ’04.. A 30min TV special which includes 4 original live songs and interviews has been edited and currently with CH31 TV for screening shortly which will enhance the bands live credibility.

MENACE will be recording at Rangemaster Studio’s with David Carr (Taxiride, Antiseptic, Kisschasy) producing and John Bosua (ex-AC/DC FOH engineer) engineering in April ’05 with an EP release to follow. With a rockin’ sound and songs in the tradition of their fave rock bands, the result is sure to be exceptional. www.menaceband.com

William Booth, founder of THE STARVATION ARMY once asked “Why should the devil have all the best tunes?”

With a successful & sold out charity gig last month in Bendigo for the Tsunami appeal ($590.00 raised), as well as a stint at The Town Hall, THE STARVATION ARMY (three ex-Sugafiend members, one Catwalk Syndrome and one Blindfold member) are itching to get back on stage where they will give you your marching orders to rock out, dance, thrust, groove, jump, twist to their huge guitar solos, a rhythm section that drives songs like a VRX, vocals that rival car alarms & a night at the opera, thanks to the influences of stoner rock, 80’s hair bands, metal thrashings, grunge plus jazz and on top of this they are giving away their EP to everyone who wants them.

This band will not be forced into one genre so forget the usual servings of soup and sandwiches, get out of your comfort zone and salute THE STARVATION ARMY for creating a new force on music. http://www.starvationarmy.com/

Thur 28 Apr
Public Bar: Los Dominados (last show before heading o/s). 9.30pm free.
Ever felt trodden on, beaten down, ignored, sucked in and spat out? Come and vent with LOS DOMINADOS. Los Dominados (The Dominated) are a Melbourne based band featuring: Michael Alonso, Helen Cattanach and Harold Fischer.

With influences from old school, garage rock and a touch of 60’s girl-group pop, Los Dominados deliver a fresh and exciting slant. It’s left of centre, so dirty and low, there’s no need for bass guitar in this line up. Come on a blistering, sonic journey through dark edged dirges, tongue in cheek fun, optimism and beauty. Raw, honest and direct.

Los Dominados have a debut album out now, ‘Basura Blanca Y Oro Negro’ (White Trash and Black Gold) and is available through Australian Records and good record stores. They’re off o/s for a while - so come check ‘em out now while you can.

Bandroom: Impossible Cinema, Mondo Cane + Quiet The Few $6 8.30pm.

Melbourne band Impossible Cinema are a five-piece, consisting of Gus M. (bass), Cadet W. (rhythm guitar, keyboards), Josh M. (lead guitar, vocals, sounds), Chris M. (drums), and Scott H.(vocals, guitar). Unlike most Melbourne bands who strive to maintain the constant unchanging thrum that is known as Melbourne rock, TIC are all about bringing the audience something that they’ve never heard before, whilst keeping listeners enveloped in a fuzz of intrigue. Verging on the edge of progressive rock yet maintaining a satisfying array of strong melodies and phat guitar riffs the band believes themselves to be the forefront of modern rock.

The list of influences is long and distinguished (like Hollywoods johnson), including bands such as The Mars Volta, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Gomez, Pink Floyd, and the ever enigmatic Nick Drake. But trying to draw a conclusion as to who or what TIC actually sound like is as pointless and foolhardy as trying to play Rachmaninov’s piano concerto no.3 on a block of pine with an empty box of matches, twelve hungry commissars and one authentic tuning peg.

We are Mondo Cane. We are a band from the western suburbs. We do not play metal. This makes us smile. Sometimes we are hard. Sometimes we are gentle. Do you like The Pixies? We don’t sound like them, but we have the same avant garde approach to our music. We follow ideas. They take us wherever they take us. Perhaps you have heard of Silver Ray. We sound somewhere between them and the pixies. We have been playing together since 2002.

Steve plays guitar and sings. Matt plays keys and sings. Matt V plays drums and sings a bit. Aidan plays bass and bobs up and down a bit. www.mondocane.tk

Greyhound Hotel Gigs

Filed under: Gigs, General — site admin @ 9:29 pm

Greyhound Hotel
1 Brighton Rd St Kilda. Ph: 9534 4189

Wed 13 Apr
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Jager Uprising w Los Dominados, Magenta + Mindset. 8pm free.

MAGENTA is a newly formed four piece band that is from Melbourne’s inner western suburbs. What started out as an acoustic side project for singer / guitarist Mat Robins, MAGENTA quickly became the main focus when Mat and brother Mark’s previous band folded. With a bunch of songs written and recorded over a year and a half, it was time to make this new band a reality.

MAGENTA has since been constructing a live set and have started to play shows around Melbourne. The plan is to gig a lot and record a releasable recording by the end of the year.

MINDSET is a four-piece alternative rock band from the South Eastern Suburbs. Sebastian founded the band, after leaving a previous band he played bass guitar for, to concentrate on his own music. The drummer Dean tagged along when he heard the songs and liked them. After some trial and error finding other musicians, Jay became the next member on guitar followed by Stan on bass that not long after got a job in Sydney. And that’s when Fernando came into the picture. Stan later came back to do their live sound mixing.

MINDSET have been together since 2003 playing various gigs in and around Melbourne. The lyrics Sebastian writes are mostly short stories based on fictional characters and own life experiences, the music is influenced by various sound scapes including Tool, Jeff Buckley, Muse, Something For Kate, Augie March and Radiohead.

Thur 14 Apr
Public Bar: Ride ‘Em Cowboy. 9.30pm free.

Ride ‘Em Cowboy is a four-piece band from the Mornington Peninsula. That’s the easy description. What they actually play is something far more complex. As the name suggest, all members share a love of country, but with everyone having spent years playing in other bands of many and varied styles — Jo played in pop-rock bands Holocene and Ripe (now Moondriven), Pete played in punk band The Potential Humans, and both Jo and Apple played in The Flying Red Dogs with former Dingoes drummer John Lee (dec.)

The music amalgam of Ride ‘Em Cowboy is subsequently one of few boundaries. Think ‘ponderosa pop’ with country harmonies and a rockin’ edge, a splash of surf, and a hint of blues. If you want a label, try `coastal and western’.

Pete, Apple and drummer Tracey Whitton formed the band in 1995. Three became four when childhood pal Jo joined in 2000; after inviting the band to play a party at her house, she liked them so much, she joined. The band name came from Pete’s dead cousin: he told Pete in a dream that he should call his new band Ride ‘Em Cowboy - really!

The band released their first EP, “Live at Tracey’s” in 1998. August 2001 brought “Mercy”, another 4-tracker, recorded by Jen Anderson (WPA, Black Sorrows) at her Subterranean Studios. In 2002, Tracey Whitton’s amicable departure paved the way for new drummer Thane Drew into the Cowdies’ corral.

With Thane, the band recorded their most recent EP, “Love Heart Candy” - featuring another four coastal and western pearls - which was released early last year. The band is now preparing to record their first album.

Bandroom: PBS’ NO FRILLS PRESENTS Lady Peroxide, Generator + Shatterpoint free 8.30pm.

3 local indie bands take over the hound bandroom for an evening of fine rockin’ toons.

The Main Event will be one hell of a showdown, with lovable motormouth Mr Damage (never one to not blow his own trumpet) + his buddy in arms, the quick as a flash Firestarter, up against the behometh that is Mr Big + 69′er, his partner in crime. It’ll be rough, it’ll be tough - it’ll be a full on in your face bloodbath. Don’t miss it.

Sat 16 Apr
Public Bar: Lustrum. Free 9.30pm.
A chance meeting, after about 10 years, saw Melanie Harrison and Shane (Shubox) Jenkins reaquaint over a smoke outside a notorious St.Kilda venue. It’d been a while since Mel had played in Christchurch all-girl punk band Twenty-Five Cents, and Shubox was on a quick break from Shonkytonk (and about 47 other bands).

Enter Adrian Chynoweth, a veteran of such units as The Reptiles, Willsmere, and the Violent Mood Swings, and the idea was spawned to form Lustrum. After a series of bass player mishaps, the band settled on Dave Job, who arrived via Smiling Infants, Buzzard Fungus and the Maryhillbillys with the bass he purchased from John Farnham’s farewell auction.

With Melanie on guitar and vocals, Shubox on drums and vocals, Adrian on guitar and Dave on bass, Lustrum have developed unique, acoustic-based, original tunes that have touches of Pj Harvey and Michelle Shocked contributing. The band has been playing around St.Kilda for the past six months, but have plans to conquer the world. Look for Lustrum at a venue near you.

Bandroom: The Drag Show. $8, 8pm.

Sun 17 Apr
Public Bar: Finger Pickin’ Sunday Sizzle w The Nash + Jed Rowe. 4pm, free.

Once described as having the “voice of an angel”, Karen Hutchinson provides lead vocals for Melbourne country/rock outfit The Nash. Drawing on influences including Lucinda Williams, Wilco and Townes van Zandt, “The Nash” mix up the covers with some fine, sweet and truly rockin’ originals, along with the inspired banter of sometime actor and comedian Matt Green.

Veterans of well-respected Northern suburbs venues including “The Retreat” and “The East Brunswick Hotel”, “The Nash” is looking to take their sound south of the river.
Jed Rowe plays his own unique brand of contemporary roots inspired music. In the vein of artists such as Ben Harper, John Butler and Xavier Rudd he takes the lap slide guitar, and infuses it with elements of funk, rock and world music to produce a sound that is both fresh and distinctive. Honed in choirs and with classical vocal technique, Jed’s voice is powerful, warm and effortless, sometimes soaring in high harmony with the slide guitar, sometimes scraping low in the gravel with the bass notes. A gifted songwriter, his songs leave audiences hooked on a first listen and have the depth to keep them coming back for more.

A native of sunny Byron Bay now based in the hills outside Melbourne, Jed’s growing list of live performances includes shows at The Dan O’Connell, The Terminus, Ruby’s Lounge The Ranges Folk Festival, Boolara Folk Festival, Vibe Cafe and a support for Matt Walker and Dave Graney at the Hills Peace Festival. Jed Rowe is a captivating original artist set for a big year in 2005. Keep an eye out.

Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Elephant Gun, The Upper Hand & Rubber Bullet. 8.pm free.

Elephant Gun are Todd Angus (vocals and guitar), Michael Barrett (guitar), Sean Dennis (bass) and Simon Murphy (drums). Together these four blokes have combined their talents to produce a pure rock sound. They formed in 1997 and after a few gigs, got their break with a record contact. If you dig Live, Alice in Chains and Jane’s Addiction, then check them out.

The Upper Hand are a 3-piece funk/grunge band with diverse influences and an aim to play high-energy live shows. Thur 10 Mar
Public Bar: The Luau Cowboys. 9.30pm free
Bandroom: Rock N Roll Wrestling with Legends Of Motorsport & Cry Baby Killers $10 8pm.

It will be a no holds barred night of intense amp frying action as two Melbourne heavyweights team up to provide the soundtrack for the mayhem that is Rock ‘n’ Roll Wrestling. On the 10th of March The Greyhound Hotel becomes home to the battle royal as the yet to be defeated Legends of Motorsport man up tag team style with rookie hard hitters Cry Baby Killers to bring down the metal chair of rock over the heads of unsuspecting wrestling punters.
On paper Legends of Motorsport are a force to be reckoned with, a long trail of broken guitars, stages and punters eardrums lay testament to the fact that these boys lay on the riffs hard and heavy. Watching the Legend’s backs, and in only their third appearance, Cry Baby Killers are also no slackers when it comes to cranking the decibels and getting down and dirty in the ring.

The Luau Cowboys deliver a mixed bit of early country music bluegrass, some blues, ethnic waltzes, rhumbas, 50’s country ala Johnny Cash, the odd Cajun tune mixed with originals and some genuine Hawaiin slack key tunes done in the island way.

The band use acoustic double bass with non other than Paul Pyle on the doghouse ex Texicali Rose, Johnny O’Keefe, and Moonee Valley Drifters. On vocals, song writing, and guitar/mandolin we have Tom Forsell, with Brian Fitzgerald from the Perth blues, and roots scene on guitars. The band has been working on a mainly original cd with Tom soon to be out and titled Tom Forsell’s “Two World’s Collide” with the Luau Cowboys.

Fri 11 Mar
Bandroom: The Amazing Zig Zag Circus Sideshow & Sydonia & Wadakai $10 from 8.30pm.

The Amazing Zig Zag Circus Sideshow has played to between 40,000 to 50,000 people, including an appearance made on the Melbourne leg of the Crusty Demons Nine Lives Tour, and for Jim Rose’s DVD Launch.

The amazing zig zag circus sideshow is made up of three members; The amazing zig zag who performs the stunts, Kimma princess of the sideshow who assists Zig Zag and makes sure the act runs smoothly and “The String Puppet” who plays guitar.

The Amazing Zig Zag never fails to deliver a mind blowing, glass eating, set yourself on fire, hammer a 4 inch nail in your head, walk on broken glass, shoulder dislocating while in a straight jacket show - while having enough time to set rat traps on himself and lift heavy objects from his eye sockets, nipples and genitals and a finale that will leave you gasping, speechless and eager for more daringly crazy stunts.

Sydonia are an independent, self-managed, original 4-piece band. They have been playing together for 8 years, the first 4 on the Sunshine Coast then Brisbane for a year, now here in Melbourne to stay. Over this time, they have developed their own unique sound and have become very cohesive with a compelling stage presence.

Sydonia’s sound is both pleasurably smooth and brutally bombastic. Whispered, angelic vocals and dreamy melodies often morph into heavy assaults or something altogether different.

Wadakai hail from Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs, this four piece has been likened to a cross between Pearl Jam, Live & Tool. Wadakai have been around for many years but have only started playing under this name since recruiting a vocalist/frontman. Wadakai contains something for everyone who possess an open mind.

Wed 16 Mar
Public Bar: Pool Comp.
Bandroom: Indie Initiative w Catwalk Syndrome, Pyramid & Young Love. 8pm, free.
Hailing from the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Pyramid is an innovative four-piece rock band. Since formation in early 2004, they continue building upon the sounds of modern bands such as Radiohead, the Dave Matthews Band, Tool and Muse, while incorporating ideas long lost, such as those of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie.

With the arrival of bass player James Livesey in late 2004, Pyramid embraced groovy, syncopated elements which blend interestingly with the heavy driving drums of Dan Teng. This foundation perfectly supports the melodic, emotional vocals and guitar work of Leigh Davies. In addition to this stunning lineup is Paul Zubrinich, one of the few keyboardists to truly cross over from skilled piano work and masterful control of experimental electronic synthesis.

“Blending soft and heavy into very dynamic, progressive rock, Pyramid are a ground-breaking four-piece who push musical boundaries and shatter the formula without fear.” - Beat Magazine, Feb 2005
