Celebrating the music of artists living with a mental illness for Mental Health Week 08

Melbourne’s rock royalty Tim Rogers and Pete Satchell (Dallas Crane) join the Bipolar Bears, Heidi Everett, Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir and songwriters from The Music Network for Mental Health for the Mad Hatters night at The Gershwin Room, The Espy in St Kilda, Thursday October 9th, celebrating their music, humanity, experience of mental illness and their place in our diverse community.

“The event is an initiative of musicians involved in the Music Network for Mental Health to get out into the broader public and let them know that they have something powerful to say and some great music to carry it” said Phil Heuzenroeder, Coordinator of the Network. “We’ll be rockin’ one of Melbourne’s most famous live music rooms!”

Tim Rogers, who is a well known champion of supporting mental awareness will be headlining the show and performing songs from his extensive catalogue at the Mad Hatters night @ The Gershwin Room. Pete Satchell, guitarist and vocalist with Dallas Crane, has been working with The Music Network for some time and sees how valuable the program is for those living with mental sk’illness.

The program also features the Bipolar Bears band, stalwarts of the Melbourne music scene for over 15 years. With lyrics like “I’m not schizophrenic, I’m just paranoid, so why don’t you all, go take a polaroid” the bands sing about the experience of life with a mental illness in a rockin’ originals repertoire.

Heidi Everett, who earlier this year featured on Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope documentary on mental illness ‘Angels and Demons’, says “If I had not found The Music Network I would not have entered a song writing competition, recorded my first EP or performed at lots of gigs including being paid as a professional performer”.

The Mad Hatters event is presented by The Music Network for Mental Health, an initiative of not-for-profit organization Wild@heART Community Arts. The Network was formed in mid-2004 to bring together musicians living with mental illness for professional development and friendship, song writing, musical skills and opportunities to perform. The Network runs weekly songwriting and music workshops, a theatre project, a monthly gig at the St Kilda Bowls Club for artist, and collaborations with other musicians and organizations in the mental health sector.

The Mad Hatters night is funded by VicHealth and proceeds from the event will support The Music Network’s music workshops, gigs and advocacy for musicians living with mental illness in 2009.

So, for a night of great music for a good cause, get down to The Gershwin Room @ The Espy, Thursday, October 9th and hear some of Melbourne’s best original and classic acoustic, blues, rock, reggae and gospel performers. Get in the mood by wearing a mad hat!
