Mihirangi launches No War
No War is the first single from Mihirangi’s upcoming second album, due for release in the 2nd half of 2008.
No War, with its almost electronic feel created through hypnotic loops and effects, takes Mihirangi (me-hee-rung-ee) into new musical territories, moving her away from the world roots based styles she’s normally been associated with.
This versatility showcases why Mihirangi is so remarkable a performer.
Brandishing a powerful and evocative message, No War sets the standard for both the lyrical and musical strength of the album. Paired with Mihirangi’s amazing vocal talent the underlying impact of No War resonates with the tenderness and raw power that makes her traditional sound so unique.
Recorded and produced by Andy Baldwin (Cat Empire, Powderfinger, Professor Ratbaggy) in New York, No War captures Mihirangi’s “live-loop” appeal with an infectious energy and groove while making her cross-cultural ideals clear. The album is full of Mihirangi’s signature fusion of soul and roots and the single No War introduces a little electronica style sound into the mix revealing the progressive evolution of her music.
Mihirangi’s mix of beat boxing, vocal harmonies, percussion, acoustic guitar and flute combined with potent lyrics addressing indigenous and environmental issues sung in both English and Maori have ensured her place as one of the most exciting solo performers in both her homeland and Australia.
Dubbed by many fans as ‘The Maori Princess of Funk”, Mihirangi is an artist that should make you sit up and take notice, for all the right reasons.
