KHANCOBAN cd launch with special guest
Thurs 24 Aug
Doors 9.30
The debut self-titled record from Melbourne’s Khancoban was recorded in the hills outside of Melbourne at the end of 2005. Khancoban make music that is difficult to put in a certain time and place. There are elements of folk, noise and other influences apparent. Taken as a whole, Khancoban music stands apart as something that is truly its own. Although settled in inner Melbourne, Khancoban (pronounced Can-cOben) are named after a tiny mountain town nestled in the Snowy Mountains in southern NSW: a small town next to a big mountain. This sense of dislocation runs throughout.

SUBAUDIBLE HUM single launch with special guest
Fri 25 Aug
Doors 9.30
In late 2005 SubAudible Hum released their debut full-length album entitled “Everything You Heard Is True”. It was a dark, venomous abrasion on the guitar format that also managed to make time for sprawling sonic scenery and downbeat, melancholic intricacy. The record showed the true diversity of one of Australia’s more progressive musical groups. Now, well into 2006, SubAudible Hum have a whole new take. Having purged much of their structural and self-imposed stylistic constraints the SubAudible Hum sound is now less definable than ever. Swinging from drawn-out orchestral opuses to quasi-UK indie trash to dam bursting, almost trip hop anthems, SubAudible Hum are exploring every crevasse of their musical ambitions.

GIGS THIS WEEK
TRIOSK (NSW) album launch with Qua
Wed 26 July
Doors 8.30
Laurence Pike (drums), Adrian Klumpes (piano/keyboards) and Ben Waples (double/electric bass) are three improvisers who came together searching for something beyond the conventions of the jazz trio. They continue to look for new ways to combine the sound and unity of purpose of a great piano trio with the textures and processes of minimalism and electronic music. This can involve layering of both acoustic and electronic sounds and manipulating the natural sounds of their instruments. In a live setting, Triosk fluctuate between the atmospheric sound scapes of their recorded work, and high-energy minimalist improvisations dedicated to the exploration of the trio’s musical possibilities and limits.

SARA STORER – two sets
Wed 9 Aug
Doors 8.30
A large part of Sara Storer’s appeal lies in her uniqueness. She burst on to the Australian music scene just five years ago as a fresh, authentic female voice and she hasn’t looked back since. Each album has been a huge step into the musical unknown and for Sara, songwriting is an organic process so when she started writing the songs for her third album ‘Firefly’, she did what she always does - waited for the music and lyrics to arrive. Sara had a great start to 2006 when she took out the Golden Guitar for Female Vocalist of the Year at the 34th CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia. This brings Sara’s Golden Guitar collection to nine in just four years.

SKA VENDORS - Hoodoo Party II with The Nuggets and Mohair Slim
Sun 13 Aug
Doors 8.30
The Ska Vendors are an eight (and growing!) piece band who have been together since early 2004. Their aim is to bring you a ska and reggae sound that is close to its roots with pulsating rhythms augmented by a melodic horn section. Add to this a Melbourne twist and you have the Ska Vendors. The band boasts an age range of fifty years, which proves that the Jamaican sound is indeed ageless. The Ska Vendors provide you with original material in a style which is authentic and rhythmic. Add a couple of skanking covers and they will set your feet alight.

SAND PEBBLES with Black Cab
Fri 18 Aug
Doors 9.30
Hailing from Melbourne, The Sand Pebbles have released their second album which sprinkles a set of propulsive, expansive indie rock songs with a heavy drizzle of retro psychedelic sounds, from the subtle stereo panning on ‘Speed’ and intensity to the patchouli oil stench of ‘Ripple’. A cover of ‘All My Life (I Love You)’ by Moby Grape’s Skip Spence establishes the band’s academic credentials, and the twelve minute ‘Black Sun Ensemble’, presumably named after the mysterious Tucson acid-rock band of the same name, is one of those unforgettable, hypnotic, slow-burning, snake-charming epics that comes along once in a generation.

GEORGE BYRNE album launch with special guest
Sun 27 Aug
Doors 8.30
George Byrne is a multi-instrumentalist songwriter from Sydney. Having released his debut EP ‘Iron Skies’ in 2005, George has since had a busy year supporting such acts as The Church, Missy Higgins, Lior, Thirsty Merc, Alex Lloyd, Epicure, Dan Brodie and Jen Cloher. George has also spent the year writing and demoing at every opportunity and over the last six months has penned and performed the bulk of his debut album. With trace elements of early Pink Floyd, Ryan Adams and Beck, George has continued his exploration into loose flowing and richly layered melodic folk-rock. With a voice reminiscent of a young David Gilmour he has the ability to write music that ranges from atmospheric soundscapes with cascading strings and haunting pedal steel, pop-rock gems and simple Neil Young-esque acoustic/harmonica laden ballads.
