ANNOUNCEMENTS
HAMELL ON TRIAL (USA) with The Go Set
Sat 16 Dec
Doors 9.30
Prior to a debilitating car accident in May 2000, acerbic New York singer-songwriter Ed Hamell aka Hamell On Trial toured constantly, logging more than 250 performances each year. Now fully recovered from his head and spine injuries, Hamell is back on the road (albeit more judiciously) and recently completed a sold-out US East Coast tour with Ani DiFranco. Hamell On Trial defies all musical categories. ‘Punk acoustic’ and ‘anti-folk’ come close. He combines the scabrous wit and pitch-black humour of both the late Bill Hicks and Hunter S. Thompson in their prime, alongside a hard-boiled pulp/noir sensibility usually found in the works of Elmore Leonard.

Doors 9.30

Kim Salmon and The Surrealists, his first solo project -complete with psychedelic shirts - travelled through the musical terrain. Kim Salmon then joined a re-hashed Beasts of Bourbon in 1988 alongside Tex Perkins, Boris Sujdovic and James Baker. DELORIS album launch with special guest
Fri 24 Nov
Doors 9.30
Deloris are a four (sometimes five) piece band from Melbourne who formed in 1999. After the critically acclaimed 2004 album ‘Fake our Deaths’, Deloris went on to release a stripped back acoustic EP entitled ‘Elastic Bones’ which had Beat magazine naming it single of the week and calling songwriter Marcus Teague ‘one of this cities finest songwriters’. The EP served as a full stop on the bands long-term dalliances with stripped back sounds, and on a late 2005 nation-wide tour with US band Okkervil River, Deloris debuted their new full tilt arsenal of songs. The first single ‘Loup Garou’ from the forthcoming full length ‘Ten Lives’, is the sharpest, loudest, leanest, and best Deloris record yet.

Sat 4 Nov
Doors 9.30
A musician of incredible velocity, Hawksley Workman invites the audience to listen with wide-eared wonder at something as simple and earnest as the new album ‘Treeful Of Starling’. JIM KEAYS (Masters Apprentices) and SEAN KELLY (The Models)
Sun 5 Nov
Doors 8.30
Classic Australian songs performed live and acoustic by two of our most adored singer-songwriters. Jim Keays has not the slightest qualm about re-recording songs he first sang 35 or 40 years ago. The Masters Apprentices’ legacy runs so deep and wide in this country’s musical consciousness that he can no sooner deny these tunes than rewrite rock history. His counter-cultural themes and his unmistakable delivery comprise a seamless panorama of words and music, a unique and profound vision that’s both epic and personal. Sean Kelly is one of our most respected musical journeymen. He has been the unequivocal leader of three distinct, highly regarded bands spanning 30 years. From the angular new wave experimentalism of the early Models, to the soulful grooves of the Absent Friends to his current, jazz-influenced touring outfit, Sean Kelly is not afraid of change.

ED KUEPPER AND JEFFREY WEGENER - two sets (November residency)
Thurs 9, 16, 23 & 30 Nov
Doors 9.30
The last two years have been some of the most pro-active of Ed Kuepper’s thirty year career. Weaving in and around re-releases from his former seminal outfits The Saints and The Laughing Clowns, as well as solo output, was an invigorated live career, this time featuring Ed and his former drummer from the Laughing Clowns, Mr Jeffrey Wegener. As a duo, they took on a tri-city residency in Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne. It was an inspired move, with full houses aplenty as Ed and co wove their magic over two sets every night. And now some sixteen months after that first residency, Ed and Jeffrey return to the NSC to take on the residency challenge. Expect the hits, more choice covers, and some new material too.

THE SATELLITES (SA) and THE DETONATORS
Fri 10 Nov
Doors 9.30
Originally forming in ’94, The Satellites’ musical influences stem from all forms of roots music including Country, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, Swing, Western Swing, Rock n’ Roll, and of course Rockabilly adding their own unique flavour to come up with the rockin’est combo Adelaide has seen in years. Since releasing their debut CD ‘Bop Tonight’ in ‘98, the band has gained a huge interest from both interstate and overseas. The Satellites live act is a show in its own right. Their performance is exceptional, with stage antics & an exuberant spontaneity that makes their live shows an unforgettable experience. They are joined by the blazing jump-rock blues combo The Detonators, recreating the styles that made the mid to late 50s such a vital time in music’s history.

Doors 9.30
Sydney rockers The Cops formed in late 2003. Their debut album ‘Stomp On Tripwires’ was released in 2004 to critical acclaim and they played nearly 100 shows in support of the record, including tours with Blondie, The Von Bondies, The Donnas, The Black Keys, Grinspoon and The Dirtbombs. The band has a new line-up, and sees founding members Simon Carter (Vocals), Beck Darwon (Bass) and year-old member Todd Smith (Keyboards) joined by new recruits Nicholai Danko (Drums) and Jarrod Murphy (Guitars). This new line-up is the strongest incarnation of the band yet, and the perfect vehicle to realise the new vision of The Cops, circa 2006! TOBIAS CUMMINGS and The Long Way Home album launch with special guest
Sun 12 Nov
Doors 8.30
Tobias Cummings and The Long Way Home launch their debut album ‘Join The Dots’. The album is the first recording with band, The Long Way Home, made up of Will Mahon, Brendan Halliday and Jeremy Kirk. They are named aptly: preferring always to take the more capricious route to their destination. ‘Join the Dots’ was recorded directly to two-inch tape, the old way, with a minimum of fuss and bother and no computer interference. The resulting sound is one that is both earthy and time-worn but which, contrarily, is also possessed of a striking modernity.

A little bit of sound can fill a lot of space but few bands can melt the air with such subtle and fragile precision as The Fakes have done on ‘Little Deaths’, the follow up release to their debut ‘Storm In A Teacup’. TONI COLLETTE AND THE FINISH (NSW) with special guest
Sat 18 Nov
Doors 9.30
Toni Collette releases her debut album ‘Beautiful Awkward Pictures’ with her band The Finish. Toni has always sung - as a teenager she sang jingles for Triple J and her beautiful vocal performances feature in highly acclaimed films ‘Cosi’ and ‘Connie and Carla’. In her usual honest and unaffected way, Toni’s lyrics are often poetic, intimate observations of life and the world around her and this makes for an eclectic, soul-stirring mix. The Finish features accomplished musicians in their own right, including Toni Collette’s husband Dave Galafassi on drums and percussion, singer/songwriter Glenn Richards (Augie March) on guitar, Pete Farley on bass and David Lane on piano.

KAKI KING (USA) with special guest
Sat 13 Jan
Doors 8.30
Kaki King is a feisty, five-foot, funny, outspoken Atlanta transplant who now lives in New York, a city whose energy is almost equal to her own. Kaki King is a virtuoso guitarist by trade, which means she generally puts out albums that showcase her skill, but Kaki King has never been one for convention. Over the last few years, she has enjoyed well-earned status as the zeit-girl of instrumental acoustic guitar. Now with her third album ‘…Until We Felt Red’ she defies expectation again - ditching her acoustic for an electric, lap steel and perhaps, the most unexpected instrument of all: her own voice. Her thumping basslines, intricate tunings, fluid melodies, and slapping percussion abound in her compositions that hover somewhere between funk, flamenco, and jazz.
