PopTarts is a night of female-fronted pop bands and female songwriters…get it? ..tarts …pop? PopTarts started from an idea by singer/songwriter Amanda Easton and has been running successfully in Sydney at the Empire Hotel, Annandale for over six years. Now, with the blessing of Amanda, PopTarts South will be promoting the same initiative on Thursday nights at Eurotrash Bar, Corrs Lane, Melbourne.

Next week PopTarts moves to a new venue – the Greyhound in St Kilda – but we’ve got one more night at the fabulous Eurotrash bar – and it’s a night where there’s something for every music taste – from the bubbly effervescent acoustic pop of Danielle and the jazzy-soul sounds of Ella Thompson to the pop-influenced jazz of Di Clarke and the pop/folk style of Sarah Carnegie. PopTarts at Eurotrash – doors at 8pm – entry $12 (or $10 with a Punter Pass).

SARAH CARNEGIE

The Melbourne based singer/songwriter Sarah Carnegie, presents a unique musical offering that has constructed a world where her voice powerfully conveys the emotions of her lyrics, from subtle sweetness to heartfelt passion. With the dominant element of storytelling, her lyrics and vocal melodies are accessible to a wide audience through a folk/pop style. Sarah recently opened for Katie Noonan at The Vanguard in Sydney and the Prince of Wales in Melbourne. The songs featured from her first solo EP entitled ‘Blind’, convey a sophisticated style which explores range and strength through song writing, the arrangements and vocally. The EP was co-produced by ARIA award-winning Anton Hagop, whose previous experience includes work with Powderfinger, Silverchair and many other successful Australian and international artists. In 2004 Sarah was part of the line up for “A day on the green” in November at Bimbadgen Estate where she had found herself 9 months previously, involved in an impromptu performance with Alaskan artist Jewel. The festival included artists such as Joe Camilleri, Diesel and headlining act Elvis Costello. For Sarah, November also brought with it the support for Tina Arena, joining the tour in Coffs Harbour. Sarah frequents Sydney venues such as The Vanguard, The Brass Monkey and the Basement where she has supported US singer/songwriter Steve Poltz (co-writer of Jewel’s hit You Were Meant For Me) and has opened for and played alongside Marcia Hines, Evermore, Diana Ah Naid, Monique Brumby, and Candice Alley. Joining this list early 2006, US singer/songwriter Jason Mraz (The Remedy) where Sarah opened the Sydney leg of the performer’s Australian tour. Previously, Sarah fronted a four-piece band, My Friend Benny, with whom she completed a five-track EP, Alone in a Crowded Room, in 2002. This EP was also co-produced and recorded by Anton Hagop. The EP’s second track ‘Rescue Me’ was selected for use in the Human Society International television advertisement in 2003 and was played on numerous television stations, including channels 7, 9 & 10, SBS, ABC, as well as a number of local stations across the country.
