Roni Horn Exhibition
A Kind of You
6 Portraits by Roni Horn
The first ever solo exhibition in Australia by renowned New York artist Roni Horn will be held at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art from August 11th.
Through sequential series of photographs, Horn’s lens catches subtle shifts in expression, time and atmosphere, exploring the vast variability of human identity.
In the portrait series You are the Weather the shifts of mood in the Icelandic sky and water are reflected in the human face. In Portrait of an Image, a hundred photographic portraits of French actress Isabelle Huppert reveal a wide variety of emotions, and in This is Me, This is You a series of photographs document Georgia Loy as she moves from childhood into adolescence.
“Roni Horn’s field of interest is well-defined, notwithstanding the fact that her subjects – indeterminism, doubleness and motion – are inherently difficult to pin down,” says ACCA’s Artistic Director Juliana Engberg. “This is an encyclopedia of identity. Horn’s photographs show studies of physiognomy in the finest variations in which the individual is always a plurality.”
Horn, who has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (2000) as well as several prominent galleries and museums across Europe, works in a variety of mediums including sculpture, photography, drawing and the written word.
She exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1997, Documenta IX and the 1991 Whitney Biennial. Horn received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. She teaches at the Columbia University School of the Arts and lives and works in New York. Roni Horn is represented by Hauser & Wirth Zürich.
In this exhibition, the works You are the Weather, Portrait of an Image, This is Me, This is You feature, as well as Cabinet of, and the publications Index Cixous and Weather Reports You.
