Square Sounds Melbourne - Chip Music

Filed under: acoustic music — site admin @ 7:03 pm

Square Sounds Melbourne will take place at the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy, Victoria, on the 15th
and 16th of February 2013 and is being put together by Kristy Dossor and Eugene Davoren-
Britton, who were instrumental in putting on Blip Festival Australia and have run Australia’s
longest running chip event series SoundBytes for the last 4 years.

New chipmusic festival is shaping up to be a chip off the old block
The founders of the world’s best known chipmusic festival “Blip Festival” went on hiatus earlier
this year, announcing that last night’s Blip Festival Tokyo would be their last for the foreseeable
future, however this should be no cause for concern from Australian chip fans with the local
teams behind the Australian and Japanese Blip Festivals picking up the chipmusic festival
mantle under the guise of “Square Sounds.”

Last night’s announcement of a new chipmusic festival and the launch of the website at http://www.squaresoundsfestival.com may not have
come as a shock to many within the close-knit chipmusic community, with hints having been made at its existence for months, however the announcement that it would be a series,
beginning with shows in Melbourne and Tokyo may have been a little more surprising.

Dossor commented “There are so many great chipmusic artists that have never performed in Australia before. Working
with the Cheapbeats team from Tokyo and our experience with Blip will make Square Sounds
something that those familiar with Blip Festival will love, while also incorporating some fresh
ideas. We have some amazing talent lined up that will feature not just chipmusic, but also some
other stylistically similar artists.”

The line-up announced so far includes artists who have performed at a variety of internationally
known events that include Burning Man and SXSW and, as such may be familiar to Aussie
audiences even if they aren’t fans of the chipmusic scene. Of course those who are chipmusic
aficionados will be pleased to hear that several of the artists, including Starpause ,
Cheapshot , Omodaka and Mr. Spastic have also performed at
various Blip Festivals over the last 6 years. Davoren-Britton however, is particularly excited by
one of the acts who is not primarily known as a chiptune artist. “We’re thrilled to have Doshy
from Germany on the line-up playing his first ever Australian show. He’s planning on playing
an extra special, live, chip focussed set for us, with a bunch of older unreleased tracks that
he’s only planning to play at Square Sounds.” Dossor added, “Doshy will be amazing, but I
personally can’t wait for Aussie audiences to see Omodaka. He’s a cross between Kabuki
theatre and video games and everyone who seems him live is just blown away.”
There are also some exciting local audio and visual artists on the lineup. Other Places who
has performed with a miriad of local talent including Ollie Olsen and Boredoms , joins local
VJs Chronic Sans and Jayson Haebich as well as cTrix who recently returned from playing
sell out shows in Europe, and is best known for his popular ‘gAtari’ video which went viral
following his Blip Tokyo performance last year. Chipmusic - music and visuals made utilising or
mimicking the soundchips from antiquated video game consoles and vintage family computers
- has gained popularity with Australian audiences in recent years, with gamers and electronic
music fans alike being attracted to the combination of nostalgic 8bit sounds and modern
music philosophies. Frequently performed using authentic retro hardware such as Gameboys
and Commodore Amigas, the style transgresses genre specific boundaries and has been
the subject of documentaries that include 2playerproductions ‘Reformat the Planet’ and the
upcoming ‘Europe in 8bits.’
A further 11 audio-visual acts are yet to be announced for the festival, along with satellite events
that will include a pre and post party featuring some of the acts that were part of last year’s Blip
Festival Australia, workshops for budding chipmusic enthusiasts and a few surprises along the
way. For further information on the Square Sounds festival or to arrange an interview/quotes
