The Butterfly Club - November Shows
Fringe returns to The Butterfly Club in November as we welcome back the triumphant trio of BEAUTIFUL LOSERS, winner of “Best Cabaret” Award at last month’s Melbourne Fringe Festival. CAN YOU HEAR ME UP THE BACK also rejoins us for another season after receiving a commendation from the Festival. As these were both sell-out shows during Fringe Festival, here is an opportunity for those who missed out on a seat to see these award winning performances - and for those who were fortunate to catch them during the Festival to enjoy them again. Also of a fringe nature - though this time from the other side of the world - Geraldine Quinn returns euphoric from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Also this month - the opportunity to see one of Germany’s most outstanding magicians in VERSCHWINDEN, and a perfect excuse to go out on Wednesdays with Dean Lotherington hosting THE WEDNESDAY SHOW.
Burkhard Augustin Hase in VERSCHWINDEN (‘to disappear’)
With wit and charm, authentic German cabaret artist Burkhard Augustin Hase will put you under a spell and let you enjoy the fact that there are things that can’t be explained. Burkhard’s talents place him beyond the realm of mere illusions and represent a dazzling introduction to the delights of the extraordinary. He is an outstanding practitioner of his craft with more than 15 years experience throughout Europe and presents his show with charm, humour and lively repartee.

Melissa Langton and Mark Jones in CAN YOU HEAR ME UP THE BACK?
For two nights only, Australia’s hottest cabaret duo Melissa Langton and Mark Jones bring their sassy, contemporary, comic cabaret back to The Butterfly Club after receiving a commendation from the Melbourne Fringe Festival. She’s the love child of Aretha Franklin and Yogi Bear. He’s very, very droll. She likes to talk. He likes to interrupt her. She has very big hair. He is prematurely bald and on the verge of a comb-over. Expect an orgy of trashy hits from the 70s and 80s, including Freddie Mercury, Nick Cave, Chris De Burgh, Helen Reddy, and Spinal Tap. Sound like a dog’s breakfast? Maybe. But a multi-award winning dog’s breakfast. “Sensational! Cabaret at its very best.” The Age. “A Powerhouse comic performance.” The Sydney Morning Herald.
Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November at 9.00pm
Tickets: $25; $20 concession-holders
Bookings: Telephone 9690 2000 or online at www.thebutterflyclub.com
Mark Jones, Adam Murphy and Karlis Zaid are BEAUTIFUL LOSERS
WINNER: ‘Best Cabaret’ award at the Melbourne Fringe Festival!
“Very intelligent cabaret … sit up and take notice” – Joel Crotty, The Age
Mark Jones, Adam Murphy and Karlis Zaid portray a veritable carnival of losers and the misunderstood that includes vampires, truckers, gravediggers, psychiatrists and, of course, ‘victims’, featuring the music and words of Kevin Bloody Wilson, Nick Cave, Sting, Lou Reed, Randy Newman, Tom Waits and more. Take a trip to the dark side of human nature. PS: Expect frequent coarse language, so watch it with a bevvy.
Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November at 9.00 pm; Sunday 20 November at 8.30pm
Tickets: $25; $20 concession-holders
Bookings: Telephone 9690 2000 or online at www.thebutterflyclub.com
Geraldine Quinn in SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND
“Killer voice…a hoot” The Age
“To hear such a beautiful, haunting, gutsy voice put to work on such dark and vulgar material might lead one to wonder if Ms Quinn is not the secret lovechild of Trey Parker and Shirley Bassey.” Tim Minchin
Direct from a lauded Edinburgh season, where she floored audiences, sang duets with a Perrier Award winner and was ordered to return in 2006, Geraldine Quinn hits home with SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND. Sass, satire and Bowie combined with a frightening libido, supremely wrong songwriting and an astonishing voice – this cabaret is the purest rock you can get with a piano and a chick in three inch heels.
Friday 25, Saturday 26 November at 9.00 pm; Sunday 27 November at 8.30pm
Tickets: $20; $15 concession-holders
Bookings: Telephone 9690 2000 or online at www.thebutterflyclub.com
Dean Lotherington in THE WEDNESDAY SHOW
Poor old Wednesday, never the beginning OR the end of the week. Now ‘hump day’ is going to live up to its name as ‘peak of the week’. Hosted by Dean Lotherington behind the piano, in front of the piano and from time-to-time underneath it, THE WEDNESDAY SHOW will use song, chat, news and reviews to illuminate the mid-week crisis Melbourne has been going through for years. November’s special guest is the adorable Sally Bourne – direct from the West End award-winning Jerry Springer the Opera and formerly in Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar and Prisoner (ATV 10).
