Filed under: Gigs, General — site admin @ 10:21 am

The Doot
@ The Doutta Galla Hotel.
339 Racecourse Rd Flemington

Phone: 9376 7233

Friday 27 May
Play - Doh & DJ - midnite
Elephant Gun - 10.30pm
The Ranch Allstars - 9pm
Free

Play-Doh When was the last time you saw a singer wearing a pair of flaming sneekers? What about a drummer who spins, flicks and stands up to plays his drums? Or a guitarist and bass player that wrestle on stage in their underwear? Putting the capital “E” back into Entertainment is this bands motto and it is this determination which has proven to see Play-Doh rise as one of the most in demand party bands in Melbourne.

Elephant Gun are Todd Angus (vocals and guitar), Michael Barrett (guitar), Sean Dennis (bass) and Simon Murphy (drums).

Elephant Gun are pure rock. They formed in 1997 and after a few gigs, got their break with a record contract, releasing a 12 track CD called Albino in 2000.

If you dig Live, Alice in Chains and Jane’s Addiction, then check out Elephant Gun.
First up on the night is The Ranch Allstars.

Saturday 28 May
Maeder www.maederband.com
The Almaboobies www.thealmaboobies.com
The House of Chords
From 9.30pm - 3am, free entry

You don’t need to know where they’ve been to know where Maeder are coming from. From filthy riff to lung-busting scream to thunderous electric groove, it’s the universal sound of finest Australian-made rock. Imagine a band led by AC/DC’s Bon Scott, with Rose Tattoo’s outlaw edge and the Angels’ Brewster brothers riding shotgun, and you’re on the right side of the tracks.

The Almaboobies are breathing new life into girl rock. Once you have heard The Almaboobies live, you will know that there is still hope for all rock music. Ignoring all stereotypes and outside peer pressure, these three sisters are slowly but surely rocking the Melbourne scene and have now metamorphosised into the dynamic trio that now exists. You are now entering into the unchartered waters and unique world of The Almaboobies…..

The three sisters, Victoria, Elizabeth and Alexandra, form the line up of The Almaboobies. A unique rock band that performs a strong collection of their own wonderful original rock. They also have in their repertoire a varied collection of classic covers from the sixties to the modern day.

The Almaboobies, as a trio have been together for more than three years and as sisters for a great deal longer!! They have a bond that few bands throughout the world can boast, and have an ambition to succeed that rivals any.

To date they have two CD’s the first called “Ouch!” that was launched May 2004, the second “I Still Like Mar-mite!” that has just been completed. The songs from both CD’s were selected from their repertoire of currently 27 numbers, so there is ample room for the next few follow up’s. The Almaboobies are a truly fresh and original band that hold their own on any stage.

The House of Chords play a wacky style of rock who are side winding their way through the live scene and with their individuality generating a sound that can’t be pigeon holed and an energy that is unrivaled. This is the exciting original band you’ve been waiting for…

This four piece formed in 2003 and it consists of Peter Olsen (bass-vocals), mark McLeod (drums-vocals), Ben Guest (guitar-vocals) and Alan Murray (guitar-vocals). The boys play varied styles of music to captivate and excite the audience. They have a huge repertoire of covered and original songs to appeal to all kinds of people ranging from hard rock to ballads and even jazz.

Peter doesn’t only just play the bass guitar and sing, he is also a real wiz on the keyboard. He found his calling when The House Of Chords were formed and ever since then has been creating ways of how the band can become its best.

Mark has toured Europe and is a real assest to the band (as is everyother member) and is dedicated to go all the way. Mark is a sensational drummer with spectacular abilities that few have would ever dream of seeing. He teaches the drums and has many excited students that are following in his footsteps. He started playing drums at the age of 3 and has no let them rest since!

Ben is an oustanding gutarist also with fantastic abilities that would stun any audience. Jiving around the stage whilst doing technical solos s not something you see at all often. Ben is a guitar teacher with students that look up to him in amazement. You will always, without a doubt, see ben strumming away at his guitar!

Alan has a magnificent singing voice and an awesome sense of humour that would win any audience. He is so full of life and really gets into the music, jumping and whooping along with his band mates! Alan is a great guitarist that defiately compliments the whole band. He puts on an awesome show and is not to be missed!

The Doot Gig Guide

Smooth, funky and full of groove. The NFO are a band of 7 funky brothers who have found the lost groove and breathed sweet, soulful life back into the fat funky beat. Saturday 23 April
The Stars www.thestars.com.au
Two Thousand Mavericks www.twothousuandmavericks.com
Marika (Love Cut Kill) - solo
From 9.30pm - 3am, free entry
With more grunt than a pig farm and more balls than day three at Wimbledon, The Stars have just bought their first tram ticket out of Melbourne’s leafy South East. “Don’t get me wrong,” warns swarthy lead guitarist Chris. “I love playing Bat Mitzvahs. But there’s a time when every band grows weary of Christina Aguilera covers and a rider made mostly of cheesecake.”
” We were ready for something more,” agrees achingly Rocksome vocalist Red. And now that something more has been released with all the force of a cape buffalo on speed.

Emerging from the studio with We’re All In The Gutter But Some Of Us Are Looking At….., the boys have tapped a semi-precious seam of rock. Needless to say, they’re just about as happy as a Mistress with a whip. And just who wouldn’t be if they sounded like The Buzzcocks on a date with Van Halen at a pizza joint on Centre Road?

Bass Man Drucifer can barely believe how juicy he sounds. “I feel like I’m diagonally parked in a parallel universe,” he says, taking pause to chamois his Datsun 120 Y. (When asked for comment, baby drummer Andrew simply muses, “I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges?”).

Ask around, The Stars are the shizzle. Take a tour of their new EP “We’re All in the Gutter, But Some of Us Are Looking At … The Stars” for absolute proof.

Two Thousand Mavericks began life in January 2000, initially a four-piece, augmented by the addition of long term live sound and studio engineer Finn Keane in April 2003. Like many young groups they have worked hard, both in the studio and around Melbourne’s live scene to develop their sound. It’s fair to say their efforts have paid off, as they are considered a “band’s band” by their peers. Check out a ‘Mavericks gig and you’ll find familiar faces in the audience.

Describing Two Thousand Mavericks’ sound isn’t difficult: Use of dynamics; a layered, multi-textured approach to songwriting developed around the group’s three guitars and vocals, bass and percussion. From a whisper to a scream, with plenty of passion along the way.

The forthcoming About a Dream EP is Two Thousand Mavericks’ recording debut, a collection of six songs recorded at Melbourne’s respected Hothouse, with production by Craig Harnath, Finn Keane and Two Thousand Mavericks. Recorded over the last three years, the songs ably document the bands’ development and growth.
