‘Shady Haze of Winter’ tour feat. HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY with THE HOLIDAYS and Artisan Guns (NZ)
Fri 20 Aug 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
Hungry Kids of Hungary will hit the road in August, embarking on what we shall call a pre-album release warm-up, bringing back to Aussie audiences what the world has been enjoying for the past two months. The band has toured extensively across America and the UK playing such famed venues as The Viper Room in Los Angeles, the Mercury Lounge in NYC, the Borderline in London and the Camden Barfly. In this time their latest single ‘Wristwatch’ has become a radio hit peaking at number three on the AIR Chart and will finally make its home-turf debut after being road-tested across the globe. Additionally, the band has completed recording of their forthcoming debut album and mixing is underway even as you read this. Entitled the ‘Shady Haze Of Winter Tour’, the jaunt boasts not only Hungry Kids’ magical pop prowess but also that of Sydney’s The Holidays and New Zealand’s Artisan Guns. With singles ‘Golden Sky’ and ‘Moonlight Hours’ currently all over the radio, The Holidays are also gearing up and creating anticipation for their debut album due for release later in 2010. It might be cold outside but their summer vibes and electropical dance numbers will certainly warm things up. Similarly so with NZ’s Artisan Guns, whose debut EP Hearts has pricked ears across their native, they now continue their foray into winning over Australia with their quirky pop-folk infusion.

LEGENDS OF MOTORSPORT with DYNAMO and YIS
Sat 21 Aug 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
Legends of Motorsport have got the horn. A whole bunch of ‘em in fact - yes, it’s big band night. Team Legends are beefing up the aural assault with a purloined horn section courtesy of Melbourne soul rockers Dynamo, who are also on the bill. Sounds like a party, right? Throw in a little garagey krautrock madness from Yis, and we have party confirmation. Yeah Uh Huh! Legends have been kicking against the Australian rock orthodoxy whilst still managing to blow wannabes off stage and outta town with their truly unique mix of Farfisa organ bluster and bottom end guitar bludgeon as either visitors from Tasmania, or now as fully fledged blow-ins, since way back in the mid nineties. Despite (or maybe due to) an ever evolving line up that has at various times featured all kinds of rock illuminati from bands as diverse as Bloodduster, the Meanies, and Rocket Science, Legends have outlasted many of their contemporaries and have released numerous 7″ singles, EPs, and albums along the way, as well as finding time to play shows with the likes of Queens of the Stoneage, Mudhoney, Dwarves, White Stripes, Hellacopters, and countless other international and local bands. And with a string of performances at various Big Days Out, Merediths, and other big parties, their reputation for driving over guitars with cars during shows, destroying perfectly good tambourines, choreographing falling down drunk and various other pool-room worthy antics precedes them.

MANDEK PENHA with Susie’s Gone, Fabio Umberto and Lan Party
Thu 26 Aug 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
It’s official! Lord Mandek Penha has chosen who shall take the position as the N.E.E (Next Earthly Embodiment)! For almost a year, the Past Embodiments and the C.E.E (Current Earthly Embodiment) have been busy establishing the Sarrean voice within the community. They have experienced both love and heartache. On May 8 2010, during the S.A.M Sacrament at the Empress, the C.E.E was brutally attacked by the foul Hish’ry Cosh’ry. Fully recovered, the C.E.E pounced into action wisely making it his top priority to warn the public of the Hish as well as promoting The Father’s love, and his eternal promise of South Sarra. As a safe guard, Lord Mandek Penha has preempted any tragic attack which may take place upon the C.E.E by implementing the N.E.E! This is possibly the most important event of the year for any Mandekean, this ceremony is a chance to see the N.E.E a person who will one day harbour The Father along with all his knowledge and powers. A person who may be the C.E.E at the time of our amalgamation with our alien benefactors IMZ. A person who may save us all from becoming Hish pigs and fighting IMZ against our will. Lan Party, Susie’s Gone, and the greatest performer of all time Sir Fabio Umberto have kindly agreed to lend us their musical talents on this very special night.

CORDRAZINE (album launch) with Nick Batterham
Sat 28 Aug 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
After 13 years, Melbourne’s beloved balladeers and former Top 10 chart-makers Cordrazine return with a brand new single, ‘Sunshine’. A tender, strings-laden ode to lovers, ‘Sunshine’ is pure joy taken from the forthcoming album, Always Coming Down, which the band will launch at The East Brunswick Club. The new album picks up where the band left off with their 1997 debut From Here To Wherever, which introduced the exquisite voice of Hamish Cowan and his classic pop songs offering flourishes of gorgeous Fender Rhodes, subtle jazzy hues and depths of emotion, particularly in songs like the timeless ‘Crazy’, ‘Memorial Drive’ and ‘Clearlight’. “I think of my songs as comfort music”, Hamish Cowan says. “That’s the way I think of a band like The Smiths and how they affected my life. Knowing I could put on their music and it would be like an embrace. That’s how I hope people feel when they listen to Cordrazine”. The new album Always Coming Down is set for release on August 13, 2010 and will be available only from the Rubber Records digital store as a limited edition numbered CD and as a download.

DIANA ANAID & MONIQUE BRUMBY with special guest
Thu 2 Sept 2010 8:00pm
Doors 8.00
Australian singer/songwriters Diana Anaid and Monique Brumby are artists who have seen it all in the music industry. Having toured together in 2001, they struck up a friendship that sees them re-unite this year for their Love Is A Weapon Tour performing intimate acoustic shows that will engage audiences with new songs and quirky live collaboration. Both Brumby & Anaid released their debut albums in 1997, both have record label and life experiences that make for great bed time stories for over 18’s as well as entertaining song writing and live performance banter. Both have forged careers in the cut-throat world of the music industry and by a strange yet synchronistic twist of fate both women have just released their 4th studio albums. Fittingly they are touring nationally playing a string of double headline performances across Australia in August 2010.

XIU XIU (USA) and HIGH PLACES (USA) with Kyu (NSW)
Fri 3 Sept 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
Touring together this September are two of the most intelligent bands around today: Xiu Xiu and High Places. There is a brutal intimacy to Xiu Xiu’s work, with songs that are both refined and intricate yet melodically vibrant, proving art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself. Their songs are a sort of expose on responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles all wrapped in a rich gothic pop sound. High Places use a range of aural layers: bells and bird calls over a wash of ocean waves; mallets hitting mixing bowls over treated guitar and glockenspiel; Mary’s reflective vocals over Rob’s homemade beats. The result is an imaginative and spacious amalgamation of sounds with a unique, almost Caribbean undertone that is as immediate as it is refreshing. Xiu Xiu and High Places together is undoubtedly one of the most exciting combinations you’ll see touring this year.

Melbourne based singer-songwriter Isaac de Heer was disconnected from the power grid for his first 10 years, and music was magical; consisting mainly of Dylan, Bach, birds, and one noisy generator. Isaac is now on the eve of releasing and touring his second record ‘Wordshapes’, produced by Roger Mars (UK). ‘Wordshapes’ follows his self-titled debut, which was recorded in Northern NSW on solar power in a quiet bushland setting. By contrast, the new record embraces the sounds of city squeeze, with greater depth and lusher arrangements. The songs are carefully constructed and lyrically driven, each with its own individual quirk. Apart from performing his own shows solidly since 2007, Isaac has supported well-known Australian and International acts such as Fink (UK), The Temper Trap, Luke Steele, Josh Pyke and Jamie Hutchings – in Melbourne as well as on numerous East Coast tours. His live band includes long-time collaborator brother Nathan on keys, with recent additions including Joel on bass, Kris on electric guitar and Fionn driving the beats.

HORRORSHOW with Seth Sentry and 1/6
Fri 10 Sept 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
Horrorshow are two 21 year old inner west Sydneysiders: Adit produces the Music, Solo handles the vocals. Attending Fort Street High School, whose musical output includes Josh Pyke, Unkle Ho from The Herd and Joelistics from TZU, amongst others, both Solo and Adit were heavily involved in bands, ranging from jazz through to rock. Along with fellow school mates and current peers Spit Syndicate, they embraced hip hop as the genre made big strides in Australia around 2000. At only 19 years of age, Horrorshow started recording material more purposefully resulting in a collection of songs titled The Grey Space. It was not until 2008 that these caught the ear of Elefant Traks on the strength of a growing buzz and strong recommendations and The Grey Space was subsequently released August 16th 2008. Since then the demand for these guys has continued to grow, with the band supporting The Herd across the eastern states and then national tours with both Hermitude and Muph & Plutonic. In between, there was a sold out launch party (Annandale Hotel), support slots with Blackalicious as well as a spot on Sydney’s sold out Big Day Out. Having officially solidified their position within the Aussie hip-hop realm, don’t miss your chance to see Horrorshow this September at the East.

THE HOLIDAYS (NSW - album launch) Papa vs Pretty (NSW) and special guest
Fri 22 Oct 2010 8:30pm
Doors 8.30
Sydney foursome The Holidays’ debut album, Post Paradise, may have been a long time coming, but it has categorically been worth the wait. The first two singles, Moonlight Hours and Golden Sky, hinted at the exciting musical re-birth this band has taken over the past 18 months, yet do not exclusively define the depths of this blissful musical journey. Formed in 2007, the band quickly made their mark on the Australian musical landscape. The release of two EP’s at opposite ends of 2008 saw them scoring Triple J rotation, share stages with The View, Jamie T, The Temper Trap & Little Red, and regularly name-checked as one of the nation’s most promising new acts before bunkering down to prepare their long-player. Now, on the eve of its release, the band are set to hit the road, launching the album across the country. Joining The Holidays on tour is Papa Vs Pretty. Frontman Thomas Rawle alongside bandmates Tom Myers and Angus Gardiner are described as post-shoegaze, cherrypicking the best bits of ‘60s and ‘70s pop and peppering it with frantic guitar rock. Having just supported Surfer Blood on Splendour in The Grass side-shows the band have their debut EP Heavy Harm out now.

Since the band’s dulcet tones first hypnotized listeners across the radio waves in February 2009 Boy & Bear have found themselves in the spotlight. Their single ‘Mexican Mavis’ had the industry whispering and music fans clambering. However, it wasn’t until the single earned the quintet the triple j Unearthed gong (landing them a spot on Homebake’s stage) that just how much of a gem this band was became apparent. Their live show takes the band to another plane. The songs presented on debut EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’ pack a bigger punch when taken to the live forum. The honesty in each member’s voice is heightened, the emotion makes chests swell and the story in each song resonates somewhere between the heart and stomach. Prior to their recent touring stint with Mumford & Sons and Splendour In The Grass, the band had a good month off the road to bunker down and write. The national tour will see the fruits of this writing time, with the band planning to bring some of these new songs to stage, along with their live staples from EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’.
