The Mermaid’s Daughter at the Darebin Music Feast
The Mermaid’s Daughter at the Darebin Music Feast
The Mermaid’s Daughter is a powerful musical shadow puppetry experience that has been captivating audiences across Australia. Based on an incredible true story inspired by the magical dimension of West African life, The Mermaid’s Daughter will be staged in Melbourne for the first time this month, during the September School Holidays, as past of the Darebin Music Feast.
Featuring traditional African songs accompanied by Kora (African harp), Balaphone (wooden xylophone) and guitar, both children and adults will be transported from the soil to the sea in a quest for healing.
Miriam Lieberman, Writer and Musical Director says:
“The story was inspired by my experiences living in shanty towns while studying traditional music in West Africa. A young girl who couldn’t walk was told by the Maribu Healer that she was the stolen child of a sea spirit. After making offerings to the sea she was miraculously able to walk. It brought home to me the magical dimension of African reality that is very, very real there. This was, and continues to be, the inspiration for The Mermaid’s Daughter.”
