Theatre of BLOOD

Theatre of BLOOD
The cult of horror meets erotic comedy as Newtown goes far beyond goth… and audience members are encourage to dress the part!

Extreme horror, lust, murder, revenge, violent perversions, gore… and laughs!
That’s what awaits the most fearless of theatre-goers when Newtown Theatre together with the Under the Blue Moon Festival goes much, much further than gothic with The Theatre of Blood with weekly Friday night late shows from October 30 (Halloween & Gothic Festival weekend!)

Le Grand Guignol was the first Theatre of Blood to hit the streets of Pigalle in Paris, following the naturalism movement in the late 19th century. It went on to be a cult success that spanned more than 50 years and influenced such classic horror films as Frankenstein, Nosferatu,The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Sweeney Todd.

Now Newtown Theatre brings the tradition to life (and blood-spattered death!) on the Sydney stage!

The blood-curdling horror of live dissections and the mutilated faces of the mad will make you want to look away. But you won’t be able to!

Each performance features horror mixed with farce and eroticism, to recreate the original ‘hot, cold, hot’ formula of authentic Guignol. One thriller, followed by comedy, then the climactic horror piece with its notorious moment of violence.

The first season features translations of original period pieces:

· At The Telephone By André de Lorde Directed by Liane Norman
· The Guillotine by Eugène Héros & Léon Abric, directed by Stephen Carnell
· Orgy In The Lighthouse by Alfred Marchand, directed by Steven Hopley

The Theatre of Blood will run as a late night special on Fridays for a three month season before a change in the program and new features are added, including new plays written especially for Newtown!

With executive director Steven Hopley at the helm, each play also has its own director and the showcases an ensemble of talented actors all skilled in slight of hand tricks and illusions… Valentino Arico, Lily Balatincz, Colin Ford, Charles Freyberg, Christine Greenough, Irving Gregory, Jennifer van Heeckeren, Kirsty Kiloh, David Richards, Brendon Taylor, Craig Walker & Kyla Ward. Design is by Anna Gardiner.

As in the Parisian theatre, a doctor will be present at every performance in case of injury or illness. To audience… or cast!
