Thornbury Theatre gig guide

Daniel Ho
Fri July 11

Join Hawaiian ukulele master and six-time GRAMMY Award winner DANIEL HO for ONE NIGHT ONLY in Melbourne! Brought to you by Alfred Music, KAMUKE Ukulele Magazine and the Melbourne Ukulele Kollective, this very special event will feature a one-hour intermediate ukulele workshop, followed by a 45-minute performance.

Daniel Ho’s simple philosophy of presenting music with sincerity and artistry encompasses six consecutive GRAMMY Awards and number-one albums on US airplay charts. In 2010, his solo ukulele CD, Polani (Pure), was the first ukulele album in music history to receive a GRAMMY nomination.

Notable credits include singing Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” in Hawaiian for the feature film Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), and his widely covered ukulele instrumental anthem, “Pineapple Mango”. As an independent record company owner, he pursues excellence in composition, performance, audio engineering and production. Ever the innovator, Daniel’s custom six-string KoAloha ukulele, the D-VI, is currently on exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum.

Acoustic Guitar Spectacular with Michael Fix, Nick Charles and Paul Wookey
Sat August 16
Nick Charles has released a dozen albums on the major Australian and US roots labels including his latest, “Into the Blues” winning “Album of the Year”, “Song of the Year” and contributing to his being named “Solo Performer of the Year” in the Australian blues scene in 2013, a year culminating in his 10th US tour…and being announced “Port Fairy Folk Festival 2014 Artist of the Year”. To top off a great year of plaudits, a track, “Sunset Blues”, won the Australian Song Competition. Averaging 150 shows yearly in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, his music draws on the fingerstyle magic and lyrical charm of the pre-war acoustic blues masters, encompassing an eclectic mix of folk and early ragtime jazz. Labelled by The Age as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues” Nick has toured with a who’s who of the music world including Guy Clarke, John Hammond, Robyn Ford, Junior Wells, BB King and Ralph McTell.

LLOYD COLE: STANDARDS AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2014
Fri June 27

Lloyd Cole is no stranger to Australian shores. From his time as front-man for The Commotions and their stadium tour of 1986, through to his Small Ensemble tour of 2011 and the many solo tours he has performed in between, he has proved a very welcome visitor regularly selling out shows right around the country. In 2014 Lloyd Cole returns for his most extensive Australian tour yet taking in all the major cities plus a host of regional centres too - Castlemaine, Launceston, Lismore and the Gold Coast among them.
Opening with the triple punch of No Blue Skies, Why I Love Country Music and Perfect Skin, the crowd were transfixed. While many of the songs played tonight are well in their 20’s each sounds as vibrant as it did on release, some more so. Proof that Lloyds theory of ‘only making music when inspiration actually strikes’ has more than paid off. - Anotherlostshark.com
